Hi All,

Since this is a thread for/by trailer types I would like your comments. I build giant scale scale models. I currently have no way to carry most of them, except in my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee (usually one at a time). I have decided that I need a trailer, however I'm getting too old to manhandle your typical cargo trailer, plus I have no place to store it (neither street nor yard). It will have to go in my 2-car garage (overhead one-piece door). The driveway is on an incline.

I recently came across the Well Cargo MPT581 [+12"]. This is a 5' x 8'6" X 5'10" (external dimensions) aluminum trailer that's no taller than the Cherokee. It has a hinged at-the-front top that lifts and a rear ramp. Curb weight is 685#, GVWR 2200#. It would seem to meet my requirements. This trailer appears to have much in common with those that have been reenginered from pop-up tent trailers or those home-made with lift lids discussed in this thread. But...it's not cheap. Approx $4K delivered. .

Do any of you have any knowledge/experience with this make/model trailer...good, or (epecially) bad ? Any comments/suggestions/recommendations? Thanks.

Don,
I was in the same situation as you concerning having to put a trailer in the garage. I ordered a Haulmark and had it lowered 12" to fit in my garage( no extra charge to make them shorter). My driveway is also on a slight incline and more so right at the entrance to garage pad for water runoff. I can't pull my trailer by hand into the garage unless I built up a bit of speed but the problem is I couldn't see the wheels and couldn't line it up as to not hit the side of the garage or my other car in the garage. I bought a cheap($55.00) 12vdc winch at Wallmart made by Master Lock and rated to pull 2000 lbs on level ground. I think my trailer weighs about 1500 lbs loaded. . I mounted it to the floor of the garage at the back wall. I just get the front end of the trailer into the garage and turn the trailer dolly sideways to prevent the trailer from rolling back out and then wrap the winch's cable around the ball of the trailer dolly and then pull it in the rest of the way with the winch. It comes with a 9 or 10' wired remote. It's been working out for me for a year since I bought my trailer. Just to let you know there are other options as opposed to commiting to a 4K aluminum trailer. You can see my trailer in this thread back on page 35.

Marty,

Thank you for your reply. Interesting solution you came up with. I will certainly give it carefull consideration. I was also looking at electrically powered dollys. Apart from being expensive ($800 - $1500), they appear to have serious traction problems on inclines over 4% and are not recommended on inclines over 12%. I have never measured the incline of my driveway. Guess I'd better do that so I know what I'm dealing with. Interesting HaulMark would cut your trailer down for free. In this day and age I didn't think anyone did anything for free anymore.

Thanks.

Don

Don,
I have a flying buddy who bought a Pace American trailer and had his shortened as well to fit in his garage. As a matter of fact, the first one that he ordered was shorter than stock and still didn't fit through his garage door and he brought it back and they ordered another one even shorter and didn't charge him any extra for what was his measuring error. I think most of them wouldn't charge extra for shorter. You only pay extra for added height. You do have to special order it though as they won't cut an existing one down. Usually it's a couple of weeks wait to order one to your specs. IMO the two most important options are torsion axle and side door.

Where did you get the tie downs that you have your planes hanging from the roof? I have shorter ones and would love to get the longer foam covered wires you have.

I just acquired a 2001 Wells Cargo MC101 5 (5'x10') motorcycle trailer which has rear ramp and large side door. Any one had any experience in reconfiguring a motocycle trailer to airplane hauler ?

Geez guys,
After reading thru all this whole thread, I decided I had to get a 6x12, v-nose. I've done my homework on-line and made some calls to the dealerships. The only decision I need to make now is between a Wells Cargo or Haulmark! The prices are almost identical for the same features. Does anybody know if one is better than the other or are they about the same quality? I will be roadtripping this weekend to see them in person.

Wells Cargo and Haulmark are almost identical price wise? When I was looking, WC was much more than a comparatively equipped Haulmark. Interesting.

To be quite honest, the wells cargo is cheaper by 400.00, same set up as haulmark. What kills me is the 1000.00 difference in price for the same haulmark trailer between two different dealerships that are 150 miles apart!!! They must think we're idiots and don't price shop. Thanks guys for your input!

Wow, that is crazy. When I was shopping, I went to internettrailers.com or something like that. They are a Haulmark dealer. They had pretty good prices and my local Haulmark dealer gave me the same price.

I went ahead and ordered a Wells Cargo. 6x12 v-nose, single axle. I only hope i don't regret not getting a tandem axle w/brakes...

all you guys that will be buying a trailer, here are a few things to consider. Before buying my triler I talked to quite a number of pilots. Here are the things that were suggested. Duel axel for a better smoother ride. With some of the bumpy roads I have had little trouble With my large aircraft bounceing around or wsings falling. Double rear doors with side door. 12 volt battery system with 1000watt inverter. Muimun of 12'X6'' to give some room for small work bench in front. White in color or any lite color. My trailer is black and always needs a wash job. It also is very hot inside in late spring and summer. I don't think that the heat is to good for our aircraft. Hope this info. helps someone. Happy shopping and happy flying.

Here is an article I wrote for RPM Magazine regarding trailer safety. If it can be of use to anyone, feel free to use the info.

I'll be using a 12 volt battery system with a 1000 watt inverter for my power. I've been looking at solar panel units to keep the battery charged.

Looks like 1 inch nylon webbing. We use a lot of that in High Angle rescue.

Somebody asked about solar on the trailer and I thought I'd post what I've learned over the last year with my trailer. My intent was to run my trailer stand alone. No plugging in to 110v. I'm running a RV fan on the thermostate to vent the trailer when the temp inside reaches 95. At the low setting this fan burns 1.5 amps at 12v. I also have a 1000 watt inverter that runs my wall gers for ging the plane batteries. I also have 12v outlets that provide power to the battery gers for my lipo's etc.

I've got a group 26 deep cycle battery as the power plant. Connected to this are two Sunsei 1200 solar panels that are rated at 1.2 amps each at full sun. My max ge rate is 2.4 amps at full sun. Using my amp meter my actual ge rate has never been 2.4 amps. Typically during peak sunlight hours I see a 1.6 to 1.8 amp ge rate coming off the ge controller.

My observation over the last 8 months of running this setup is that the solar can not keep up with the demands of the trailer. Over the course of several weeks of use the battery voltage drops from a 13.5 volt full ge to 12.1. During this period I leave the inverter on for roughly 80% of the time with six or eight wall gers plugged in ging my planes.

What I did to resolve the issue without having to supplement the ging via 110v was to take my trailer plug, replace it with a RV seven pin plug and add a ge line to the battery from the tow vehical. Since I have a 30 to 40 minute drive each way to the field the trailer battery is getting a real boost while tied into the tow vehical.

So in conclusion if I was to do it again and really wanted abundant power I would have doubled the solar capacity which in turn would have added an additional $400 to the solar investment. Retrofitting the additional panels to my trailer after my ceiling has been finished would be a pain so I'll stick with reducing the inverter usage. I did add a LCD voltage meter to the trailer wall so I can now monitor the battery condition more closely.

Hope this helps some of you on your trailer builds. Jerry

Not sure where I got the volt meter. Maybe Radio Shack. It was a $12 item, nothing fancy. Mounted to my trailer wall via velcro.

Ok, I think you're talking about a multi-meter type. I thought you meant just a voltage display that was on constantly. I've tried to find one of those, but no joy.

Thanks,
Rick
