With the cost of gasoline/diesel these days, I don't know how you all are dragging those trailers down the road. I am looking for a very small trailer that can be pulled behind a small car like a Toyota Corolla. Anybody here have any knowledge of small trailers?

These gas prices make it way too expensive to go to work. Ah, flying, never a problem.

If I have to worry about the gas I use to get to the flying field I shouldn't be in the hobby.

Well, we will see just how much money some you have over the next couple of years. Fuel prices have just started the accent and it may get to the point that it could cost hundreds to pull these trailers down the road. Some people I know are already spending hundreds each week. It would take a hundred or more to top of my tank now.

If it gets to the point I can't afford to drive to the flying field because I use a trailer is the day I'll be selling everything I own related to the hobby. Now I might be less inclined to go to the flying field several times a week and instead go for a long single day. Given the fact I pass the flying field on my way to and from work makes that possibility very slim. As a percentage of my income, gas is much cheaper today than it was in the 80's.

There is alternatives. I tow my trailer with a honda civic and still get over 30mpg. Couldnt afford to use my F350 for flying anymore. This has worked pretty well for about 2 years now.

I've been quietly reading this thread for a while as I'm in the market for a dual purpose trailer to haul my bikes and to haul my RC stuff.

But I have to agree 100% with this statement: It also applies to my "other" hobby: motorcycles.

So can we drop the gas price issues and go back to trailer customizing and layout?

I'm picking up my trailer this weekend.

I noticed a lot if you guys are using bungee's to secure your planes. But, what are you mounting in the floor for the bungee's to attach to?

I use medium size D rings. Put em wherever you need them in a minute with two screws. I found a good deal here

That is a real good deal. Those things are usually $5.00 - $6.00 each.

I just picked up a 5X8 trailer. Had a little bit of time to start working on it. I used vertical E-Track for the shelves
and the top wing rack so they can be adjusted any time I want. I went with a deep cycle battery inside for the chargers.
I picked up a plug from the RV store that lets you plug a cord into it from the outside and installed an outlet on the inside of the trailer
for the battery charger(see Pictures). D rings for the hold downs and either velcro or bungee's to hold the plane down.
Don't mind the mess inside I have limited time to work on it with the 3 little ones, baseball games, dance reciteles, work and
of course FLYING.

I'm just finishing a toy hauler that will facilitate getting multiple toys to the field, and to be a "less dusty" toy storage place in my garage. (I now haul one toy at a time in the bed of my pick 'em me up, and store my toys wherever there is space.) With Sunbrella sides and back, I expect to be able to haul several fully assembled toys including 30% ones. Inside dimensions are 112" long, 82" wide and 58" high. I've still got some work to complete, but after installing the cloth walls today I am encouraged. (Among other things this project has taught me is that I don't sew worth a darn.)

Fly safe, Glover

Guys I am worried about the heat build up in my trailer. (6X12)
In Florida it can get pretty hot.
What is a good way to keep the temp lower in the trailer when it is closed up?

I am thinking about adding wall vents and pulling outside air in at them using computer fans.
If I leave the roof vent open it will let the hot air out the top.

Any thoughts on the subject would be Great.

Testfly,
I'm in the process of installing 110V. So I ran a line up to my roof vent where I am planing on hanging some AC fans I purchased at Radio Shack. Also I picked up an Attic Thermostat to cycle the fan on and off as needed. The Attic Thermostats are rated for 110-120v so no relay is needed.

Where did you get your Attic Thermostat? I have been looking for something I could wire in-line. Best I could do so far was a box fan at Home depot for $20.00 that had a Thermostat built in. Seams to work OK so far. But the problem is I have to get air in to let air out. at the moment the fan just moves the hot air around inside the trailer. So I thought about putting in wall vents and adding fans to them to pull air inside the trailer.

If I mount the vents high they are less likely to be messed with. If I mount them low it might be better for air exchange.
I am stuck at the moment. But I do need to do something. It is just to hot in there for my planes during the heat of the day.

BTW did modify the Attic Thermostat to work or is it a simple plug and play deal. (Plug into 110 AC, plug in Fan cord, Set temp and close the door)

I have worried about cooking my planes too. Where I live the temps get in the triple digit range. My solution is to have two vents on the top of the trailer with vents on the lower for fresh air intake. The two top vents are from a RV supply shop that have solar powered fans that draw the hot air out of the trailer. Even on hot flying days I have found that the interior is a favorite spot for the Hangar Queens!

TooLow,

Where did you locate the lower vents?

Store, and where on the trailer. (I don't see them in your image)

I installed a vent in the side up near the roof for intake and another one down low on the other side near the back for exhaust while traveling down the road. The Attic Thermostat is a replacement for the box fan. You should be able to pick one up at a local Electrical contractor shop.

testflyI located the vents in the rear door 2-4"x8" vents for air flow and they can be closed for travel. As for the power vents they are solar powered and vent out the back of the cover thats over the 2 standard roof vents that I installed. I got them used so thats why they dont match and traded airplane stuff for them=cheap! The 2 fans are about the size of computer cooling fans but do the job. There is a little temp. control pot that you can adjust for temp 75-90deg range. I just leave them all the time to vent gas fumes and keep planes cool. Free elect is great, and they run so quiet that you have to look up in the vent to see them run! The brand name of the vent s MaxxAir

TooLow,
What brand are the 4"X8" vents? Sounds like that is what I need. Maybe with some luck I can find me a set. Any ideas on where?
Thanks!
