Since I just purchased a 6X12 V-nose, iI thought it was time for me to pay attention to this thread.

You guys have done wonders, and I appreciate the ideas brought forth.

I haven't had it for 24 hours, so no progress has been made, other than installing a hitch on my truck.

Using ideas posted here, I hope to get started this afternoon.

Thanks, again.

Hey Tom,

I too got the bug and finally bought a trailer. (6 X 12) I was having to fly what I took to the field. Some days I was just not sure what I wanted to fly and it would be nice if I could just take them all and pick what I wanted to fly when at the field. (A Rolling Hanger if you will)

I looked at many ideas and came up with what I feel is a great idea for getting my flying planes to the field.

The first thing I did was to paint the walls / floor and insulate the ceiling. Insulation was the Blue Foam placed between the roof framing. I foil taped all the joints to seal them. Then I covered the insulation with coraplast. (4X8 sheets of sign material) Then I put slotted brackets on all the vertical channels on both sides of the trailer. Then I drilled 2 holes in all of the shelf brackets as mounting points for saddles. I used some 1/2" plastic sheet material and cut saddles for my wings and fuselages. I lined the saddles with 1/2" strips I cut from a camping pad I bought at walmart. I glued the stripes with Goop glue. I hold the wings and fuselages to the saddles using (ready for this) sheet straps from the bedding department at walmart. I have made the saddles so that the straps fits them all and can be replaced in 5 seconds. (It just clips on a screw that has been covered with a short pc of fuel tubing. I should add that the rear of the 2 jets need a longer strap so I culled a few straps and made longer ones for both jets. I also made a few extras. Later, if I find the strap budgie losses it's hold, I will use the clips and add Velcro with a pc of foam between it and the model. (I may do this anyway)

At this point I have 11 planes hanging inside my trailer and have another one on the way for a total of 12. I also have a large charging area for charging batteries. The front wall is open still so there is room for a few more. The best part of this system is that I can get to any plane without having to move another one.

The images below should show the details.
More images of the work in progress in the next post.

Here is a look at what I used.
Note I made the saddles from 1/2" plastic sheet. I would think BC Plywood could also be used as well.

And a few more of the inside of my Rolling Hanger.

Note, I am still working out some details so the shelving below the Lipo Charging area may change before I put my tools away.

Nice work, testfly.

I spent my day installing peel and stick floor tiles. My neighbor suggested that I buy them at Dollar General. A 30 sq ft package costs $11.00, so the total cost of the project was $33.00. Not bad.

No pics, as of yet. Just as I was finishing up, a thunder storm rolled through. I closed up the trailer, and headed for cover. LOL

My next project will be to carpet the access ramp.

Are you sick & tired of the stains on the sides of your trailer? I was! So I came up with this easy idea. I put mini evestroughs on the sides of the trailer and it works very well.
I just used "J" channel (used for vinyl siding.) You can purchase it at any big box store or vinyl siding store. I then cut the nail slot off and then screwed them to the sides of the trailer as close as I could get it to the existing drip rail. It would actually slip up underneath the drip rail just a little bit.

....I had some leakage in my side door because of the wimpy channel
that comes stock. It looks like your modification would certainly cure
that problem....

....thanks for the tip.

I like the eaves troughs idea.

I now have enough D-Rings mounted on my floor, to handle alost any tie down configuration desired.

Carpeting has been installed on the ramp, provideing a slip free surface to gain access to the trailer.

Insulation has been added to the ceiling. Hopefully, it will help to keep the interior temps, down.

The dealership sold me the D-rings for a dollar a piece, so I figured I may as well install a lot of them. They'll come in handy when the time comes.

I installed the ceiling, yesterday, along with cradles to hold a couple more fuselages. After I do some cleanup, I'll post a pic.

You may be right about people wanting to borrow it, but I'll keep the trailer full of models, making that nearly impossible.

Here is an update on my trailer project as of 7/1/08.

1) Shows the power coming in from the floor. I cut and then sealed the hole. The cap on the string you see plugs the hole when not in use.

2) Shows the power control. Turn on the single switch and the trailer has power if plugged in.

3) Shows the charging station control. I can control back wall outlets which are used to charge receiver flight packs left in models.
2 amp lipo chargers are powered by the labeled switch, DC power supply is also controlled by a switch as well as
the Piranha charger. If I am not using a charger there is no need to have it on. I can flip a switch much faster than
I can plug up a charger.
4) Is a look at the storage drawers and the use of my model setup table to secure things while going to the field.
5) Is a left wall view as it is now.
6) Is a right wall view as it is now.
7) Is a close up of the bracket support types I am using.

Hey ga,

No problem, But I'm no fun. I don't drink, smoke, fish, bar hop, own a boat (that ain't RC I mean).
So I have a few bucks to spend on a hobby. It also helps to have a wife that knows I enjoy flying models.

Oh but she did get a little upset with the trailer.

Oh NO, not because I bought one and NO, not because I have spent 3 weeks working on getting it ready to use.
But of all things, because I took my planes down and store them in the trailer now.

When we bought our first house together just after we married. I hung 2 airplanes up to keep them
from being damaged during the move right?. She walked into the room and gave me a funny look and
said.. "You know it would look better if this plane was hanging down there and that one was hanging up here".
I stoped what I was doing and swaped the planes. (See Image) From that day on (7 years now) My planes have always
hung in the living room ceiling when I was not at the field flying them. We now have 14' ceilings and the airplanes
helped fill the space.

So you know what that means, Yeah I get to buy a few planes so I have something to hang in the house just to
keep her happy. Yeah she is a keeper for sure.

And before someone ask, She has 1 sister and she is married.

All kidding aside, the trailer has been a thought of mine for about 6 years. (I started looking at this thread in 2002)
There are for sure a lot of GREAT IDEAS found in this thread. I have built on a few of them with my setup.

So, Thanks to everyone for sharing your ideas. I look forward to seeing what others come up with.
I am sure many will agree that a trailer project is never really done.

Very nice, testfly. It's quite evident that you have a well thought out plan.

You are also fortunate to have the support of your wife. Mine doesn't allow models in the house, but does support my modeling activities. She's spent over $100.00 on my trailer this week, as I've been strapped for dispoable cash.

My trailer project is nearing completion, too. I hope to have it wired for 110V by the weekend. My field battery will be wired in to the 12 volt system, allowing it to be charged as I travel. It will also power the interior lighting.

I, too, want to thank the contributors to this thread. I've found many useful ideas, here.

As I haven't managed to take progress pics, I'll post some upon completion.

A DUST BUSTER??? I never thought of that, great idea!!

Is that a box fan on the ceiling over your vent? How does that work out for you?

That is a very nice set-up you have there.

bolar,

Yes, But one with a thurmostate control. (Would you believe $20.00 at Lowe's) I also added a roof vent cover (found online) so the vent can be left open and rain will not blow in. It was well tested today and no rain came in. So worth the 24.99 for sure. Best part is that the fan is pretty thin. I am 6'3 and can walk under it without hitting it. Note: I did remove the grill on the up side and it does help move the air.

The box fan is a great idea. Good. Another idea that I can use.

I purchased my vent cover from the local RV Supply store. It was about the same price. Mine has kept out rain, too, even in heavy winds.

WOW!! some pretty awsome trailer set ups out there. Lots of great ideas too. Still designing mine, as I want it right the first time... lol.. also, because I am pulling with a small car, so I want as much room as possible with as little weight and drag as I can get away with.Hopeing, when done aprox 6 x12 long and maybe 6 ft high...... but one design I saw here has both an opening top and back door, so maybe won't have to go so high.

the plan is to build it as low to the ground as I can to allow for the height. And I am starting with an old pop up tent trailer frame, so its light and has softer springs to start with.

A word of advice to those who do or want to tow with a smaller car. Mine is a 96 dodge neon, 2.0 liter. Pulls trailers just fine, just have to plan your stopping a lil ahead of time. I have been pulling trailers with small cars for years, and stopping is the only real problem at times. And I have pulled some heavey trailers with my small cars and the only problem encountered was bottoming out on a bad grid once.

Watch the tounge weights and try and center the weight on the trailer axle as best you can. Goes for any trailer really.Don't over load the tounge and by all means, don't over load it behind the trailer axle. I ussually don't trailer much over an hour at the best of times anyways, so for the fellers going longer, then try to make sure you have a trans cooler, and don't push it, with bigger trailers.

Check around. By the time you add shipping you can pick one up at a trailer store for less.
http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-vents/31-1919.htm

Took 15 minutes to install and I now leave my vent open all the time.
