Placing vinyl logos on a trailer is a matter of personal preference. Some feel that you are advertsizing the contents, and inviting theft. Others feel that theives are looking for construction equipment, or something else that is easy to sell. They won't want to steal models, which are harder to disperse.

There is no correct answer. Whatever is going to happen, will happen with or without the logos. If you want them, get them.

Graphics can be purchased from local sign companies, or from dealers more dedicated to the modeling industry. They can be custom made to your specifications.

There is a guy that sometimes has ads in the RCU Marketplace. I think it's called Wildman Graphics. You may want to give him a shot. Others are Kirby's, and Calle's. They should have websites, but I don't have the links.

Good luck with your trailer. I hope that you post pics as you convert it to modeling usage.

Okay, here's another question.

Plowing through all the ideas for the trailer. Am planning to build a lounge in the front section and would like some windows. May put some smaller windows in the back? The question, Has anyone attempted to install their own windows in cargo trailers? Wouldn't think it would be all that hard. But then as the wife says, It always is more than you think and takes longer than you think.

Thanks for any help, ideas and suggestions.

Your wife must talk to my wife, cause that sounds familiar.

I would think any window from a camper should be able to be installed in a trailer. You might have to build up some support around the opening.

My neighbor, the RV expert, offered to put a window in my trailer. It was designed for a camper. He said that it is a relatively easy project.

testfly,

Really like the looks of your saddles, but I've been looking for the 1/2" plastic.
Where did you find the 1/2" plastic sheet?

Thanks for your help

The plastic I used comes from a boat surplus company.

you might try a vinyl trim board material called Azek, found at most local lumber yards.
It cuts nice and is light weight. It is a 3/4" stock and can be found in most widths up to 12"
It is white all the way thru the stock and needs no painting. You can use their glue to glue
up boards wider than 12".

Hope this helps

I put my trailer to it's first real test, last weekend. Four of us loaded our models into it, and headed for a flyin.

The trailer's layout worked as I had hoped. Pic attached./

I installed my cooling vents. Still need to get pics, but they are doing a good job of lowering the interior's temperature.

Hello everyone,
I just completed my own home built 6 wide x 8 long x 6 tall all wood trailer. My ideal was to make it real tight and put a dehumidifier in it. I hear some of you are putting vents in your trailers. I was conserned with moisture build up causing havoc on the engines and stuff. Is this not a problem? I live in the far Northeast corner of TN and it gets rather hot and sticky here at times. I also plan on installing an Air conditioner to come on at about 100 ~ 110 degrees or so...is this overkill? I plan on keeping my radios and aircraft in the trailer all year round. Let me know what your thoughts are.
Thanks

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about getting a trailer for a while, especially after I got my 35% Carden Edge. I Had to transport it to the field in the back of my SUV with the tail gate down, resting on a half sheet of plywood. You can imagine the looks I got toolin’ down the road with a huge plane sticking half way out the back. By the time I got it to the field I was getting woozy from the exhaust fumes! Then I found this forum and knew a trailer way the way to go. Thanks to everyone that posted their great ideas and thanks to Uncle Sam for the “Economic Stimulus Check”.

So, here are some pics of my pick, an Interstate 14x6x6.5 in hunter green to match my truck. I had the factory install the insulated ceiling and the camper side door, I added 6” in height since I’m 6’2” and got the “Millenium Package” for the rest of the bells and whistles. Progress is slow because it’s like 100 degrees in the shade here in Louisiana right now but I managed to paint the inside and start on my shelf using the E-Track system. I have an idea how I’m going to do the 110 wiring but clueless on how to wire the battery to work the lights when I disconnect from the truck harness. Can anyone help on that please? Diagrams are always welcome. More pics to come.

Cheers,
Lothar

Lothar,
The easest way to hook up your lights to work from an onboard battery is to use a wiring harness from the battery just like the one on the truck harness. Then all you have to do is disconect from your truck and them hook into your 12 volt battery. This may be a over simplicfication but without knowing how your trailer is wired for 12 volt this may be the quickest way.

To all... I still want to know why most trailers are insulated and vented. Would it not be best to use a dehumidifer and airconditioner to regulate the temp and humidity for the sake of the engines, radios etc? I am conserned that if I vent my trailer to outside air it may be too humid and induce faster rusting to my glow and gas engines. I am intrested to hear anyones commit on this.
Thanks
Wolfdragon

Ok, I just spent over 3 hours going over this thread (forgive me...I have dail up) and I lean that the only reason to insulate is to help with the heat build up...So I will add foam or something to my roof...However, when I am storing my goods in my mobile aircraft carrier wont the humidity build up inside? I have a dehumidfyer, should I use it or just vent the trailer so heat wont build up?

I hope to add picts of my homebuilt trailer soon...that is if anyone is intrested

Well I don't know about anyone else but my trailer is not air tight. I haven't noticed a difference in humidity from the inside to outside of the trailer. I usually have 4-5 airplanes in my trailer that I fly regularly. I only pull 2 out at a time, so each engine is usually used every other week. I've been going on eleven years now with my trailer and I haven't had a problem with rust or corrosion. My trailer is stored under a big pine tree which shades it through the day, which keeps it kind of cool. During the week when I'm not flying it's not cooking in direct sunlight. I don't keep my planes in my trailer over the winter though, I bring them in and store them in my basement.

So given all of that, it can't hurt if you have a dehumidifier and have the space to put it. Also if you don't mind it running all of the time, go for it. I would be interested in how it works out for you.

Yes, post some pics .

Condensation can form during temperature changes, going from cold to hot. A simple ventilation system will remove the moisture buildup.

I see no need to add A/C or a dehumidifier.

Lothar, You're off to a good start on your trailer.

I used a two prong plug to hook my lights to the field battery. You need to find the wire to the light switch, and splice into it.

Well, the conversion of the 24' car hual trailer has begun. (it's BIG - 24' with 4' V nose X 8' wide by 76" high). Planning to make the front 9' X 8' feet or so a lounge to get in out of the heat and cold. That will still leave me about 15' X 8 foot for planes and little shop. Just installed a 4' X 2' window and a 2' X 2' by the door. Still have door window to install. They actually went pretty smooth. Have the 15,000 BTU AC/Heatpump to put in the top vent, which hope to get in this week. Gutted the whole thing, am insulating the roof and walls and ran miles of 110 and 12V wiring. Will have jacks and plugs all over the place. Wife suggested the fridge, TV, DVD and stereo....I said, "thanks for the idea" LOL. (These can all work into the V nose well.) Also have a dish and receiver laying around that she suggested hooking up.... golly Maybe she doesn't want me at home anymore? We'll see how it all progresses and turns out? Will hopefully post some pics one of these days when further along with completion. I've sure gained a lot of good ideas from all the postings here, keep up the ideas and suggestions.

Guys,

I recently added a box to the tounge of my trailer; I intend for this to hold 2 - 12 volt large capacity batteries and run accessories in my trailer. My problem is I am not an electrician and have no idea how to wire the 2 batteries together or how I need to run the wires in the trailer. Could you guys forward me any ideas or diagrams so that I might be able to do this project... would reaaly like to run chargers, additonal lighting and an alram system in my trailer. I just need to know how to wire it correctly; I also want to be able to hook up external 110 power to the trailer as well if available... any ideas and suggestions would be most appreciated.

Rick

Here are some photos of my homemade 8x6foot trailer. It started as a small boat trailer and I extended the back a few years ago so I could haul some 4x8 ply. Because I was limited on how far back I could place the wheels I saw weight as a enemy while building, thus the frame is from riped 2x4s into 2x2, saves weight and money. The sides and roof are cheap $10.00 Luan door skin ply treated with 3 coats of wood treatment. The roof will receive a tarp cover for added protection. I painted the inside white and added 1 inch thick foam insulate to the roof after looking at all the suggestions on this thread. I used 1" dowl and 2x2 drilled with a wood bit for the wing and fuse holders. The trailer in not finished yet and the aircraft are just sitting in it to help me configure the insides. Yet to be added; wood battery and gasoline box on tounge, vet fans (?) inside lights, small work bench with vice and a bunch of other assorted junk.

Just a thought...I have heard a few guys talk about keeping the tounge weight low... Yes, this is important, however it is better to have a heavy tounge then a heavy rear. What I mean is this, a tail heavy trailer can fishtail and sometimes very quickly at speeds. So, if you are ever pulling your rig and it starts to get unrully, STOP! and move some weight to the front of the trailer. I had a 30foot travel trailer and just moving my heavy convection microwave from the rear bedroom to the front made all the difference in the world.

Awhile back, we were discussing graphics for our trailers, and where to purchase them.

Gary Sibert, formally of GetStencils, has opened a new company. He can produce just about any graphic for our haulers, including pictures of our actual models.

I just recieved some of his new product, and they are terrific ! He can even do metallics.

The quality is the same as we have come to expect from GetStencils.

I'll get a pic posted soon.

Gary's company has yet to get a name, and there isn't a website, yet. You can contact him at: gsibert@verizon.net

Over the past year or so, I have switch from flying 60 to 90 size planes to mostly larger scale gas planes so the minivan doesn't seem to be the best way to go anymore considering the fuel smell and hangar rash issue. Considering a trailer and I like the 6X10 or 6X12 size but it must fit in my garage. My homeowners association prohibits trailers, boats, etc parked in the street or driveway. I have a standard 3 car garage so the door opening is roughly 6"9". Most of the Wellscargo type trailers are taller than this. I believe they will build a custom height but wanted to get input if there is a commercially available trailer out there or if custom is the only way to go. I know some have built their own trailers but I don't have interest in doing this. Thanks in advanced for the help.

Hey P47. Best thing to do is order what you want and have them cut it down 12". When I bought my trailer there was no additional charge for the chop job. Having bought the 10' I'd say you should do the 12'. By the time you put your gassers in there the extra 2' of room would be very nice to have and cost almost nothing in the form of $$$ or weight. Good luck, Jerry.

Talk with the dealer. I had mine go the other way and made it taller (6 inches) than the stock trailer. I'm sure they can go the other way and make a 6X10 or 12 shorter.
