I have a quick battery charger that does 6V or 7.2V and a slow charger for Nicad or Nimh at 7.2 volts. My question is...are there very many planes out there using 7.2 volts. Seems that a lot of kits I read about have 8 cells. I have lots of balsa lying around an am thinking about building a speed 400 powered plane from scratch...would a 6v speed 400 direct drive motor with 7.2 volts be a good power plant to work with?

I am new to electrics...

Thanks

If you keep the airplane very light, say under 16oz ready to fly, and give it very large wings, there's no reason you can't have a 6-cell (7.2 Volt), Speed 400 powered plane. Something like a scaled-down sailplane would be good.

Voltage is like cubic inches in an engine, though. The more you have, the more powerful the system will be. The advantage to a higher voltage is, you can prop the motor to keep the current (Amps) lower, which makes for longer flight times, keeps everything from getting too hot, and allows you to use smaller, lighter batteries.
