    Hi,

I am starting this thread to colaborate ideas from R/Cers that may be building the Curtiss P-40N Warhawk from Hobby Lobby. I am building mine stock and will show some photos along the way.

The plane has lots of parts for an ARF but it is because there is incredible detailing on this warbird and the kit includes two different finishing schemes.

Here are the foam parts. The fuselage and tail have many pre-assembled parts in them already.

    Here is the power system.

A geared 7.7:1 Speed 300 motor, 3-blade prop, and red spinner.

Since the gearbox does not reverse the rotation of the motor shaft, the ESC "+" wire is soldered to the red dot terminal on the motor.

The Graupner Speed 300 motor is allowed to run in the forward direction for maximum power.

The custom cut firewall fits the gearbox like a glove after a little sanding.

The gearbox is then lightly sanded to rough up the surface before gluing.

Thanks for starting this thread Greg. I just received my P-40N for my birthday. I am finishing up on my Dandy Sport from Mountain Models to get some aileron flight experience before I try this plane. I was wondering if my 8 cell 1100 folded Nicad pack from my Wingo upgrade would work OK in this plane when I get ready to fly it?

    Hi,

If you're talking about the B11X8F 8 Cell 1100 X-Cell Folded NiMH Pack from Hobby Lobby then it might work.

That pack weighs 6oz compared to the 4oz stock 720mAh pack. My understanding is that this plane flies very well using the stock Speed 300 setup so the extra 2oz shouldn't hurt it too bad. If it works well, you'll get some long flights!

I plan to alternate my stock 8-cell, 720mAh, NiMH pack with a 3-cell, Kokam 1500HD pack that weighs about the same as the stock pack. This approach, while costing more, doubles your duration and gives you extra power without any weight change.

    Greg,
Could you post a link to more info on that "3-cell, Kokam 1500HD pack" and where to buy them? Some info on the charger you're using for it would also be most helpful.

    Thanks!
    D

    PS
No P-40 yet - hopefully in taday's mail...

You can get them from FMA Direct as P-51B posted or you can buy them right from Hobby Lobby.

For charging Lithium packs, I prefer the dedicated Lithium chargers like the Kokam LiPo-402 also sold here at Hobby Lobby.

    Thanks guys!

After reading through some of the threads in the "Power Sources" forum here, looking at the various warnings everywhere and at the prices, I think I'll stick with the NiMH packs until Li-Po technology matures a bit more.

    Greg,
Have you made any progress on the P-40's construction?

My P-40 came in yesterday's mail. I spent a couple hours last night getting the wing assembled and the plastic landing gear details installed so I can paint the Tamiya Flat Earth camo pattern on it today.

So far, it looks GREAT! Really high quality parts and very complete.

I'll start a "painting a foamie" thread when get the camo done.

    Hey Darin,

I'm glad to see that your Warbird showed up. I'll check out your painting thread since customizing these planes is great fun!

Here are some shots of the parts needed to mount the prop and spinner.

The second photo shows the fuselage end cap mounted. I needed to sand it to match the distortion I created from wedging the firewall into position.

Here the prop is mounted and ready for the spinner.

Note that the whole assembly pulls out a bit when powered do to slight play in the gearbox shaft.

Man!!!!! I like this plane! The problem with showing off all of these products....on this form is...... it makes me want all of them, especially this P-40. Let us know about the performance with the lithium cells. Have you thought about that 280 sized MP Jet brushless motor that Hobby Lobby offers? That along with the lithiums should make that bird really fly!!!!!

    Greg,

I'll soon be moving on to the steps you've done, and I have some questions:

    1) Did you drill the output shaft case for an oiling hole as per the instructions?
    2) If so, where did you drill the hole in the top of the fuse?
    3) How does one get the oil so far inside? Hypo needle?
    4) Would oiling the shaft from the prop end from time to time by removing the prop be better/less work than drilling the output shaft case and ooiling from outside?

    And finally:
    5) Did you CA the prop blades to the hub?

Seems to me that leaving the blades pressed in insead of glued in would come in handy if any of the blades ever needs to be replaced.

    Thanks,
    D

    Darin,

No, I didn't bother with the hole for lubricating the bushing but i've been told that it is a good idea. If I suspect that my gearbox needs lubricating, i'll drill the hole then.

I also did not CA the prop blades since mine were a reasonably tight press fit.

My friend, Paul Weigand, showed me a great way to also make the spinner removable using two rare earth magnets. You can either use the ones from Radio Shack or Wondermagnets.

I CA'ed a magnet to the prop adapter end and another to a circle of balsa inside the spinner. The spinner stays on tight because these tiny magnets are very strong! It removes easily with a little tug.

    Thanks Greg!

I really like that spinner-retainer idea. If I can get to Radio Shack or AC Moore sometime soon, I'll give that a shot.

Here is another more obvious idea since it practically cried out.

Turn the exhaust scoops into active air scoops for motor cooling. The cool part is that the fuselage slots are already cut!

When I'm not in a hurry for parts to dry, I love using the Aileen's Tacky Glue. It is just like a thick and tacky version of Elmer's Glu-All and is available just about everywhere.

Here I glued the P-40 horizontal stabilizer and control horn in place. I used masking tape around the vertical stab. while it was drying.

I choose to keep my gear fixed up inside the wing. It can optionally be made workable for displaying the gear down.

The left side is shown completed and the right side has the wheel and strut glued in place. I cut an angled piece away from the foam under the strut to make it mount flush with the wheel.

These parts are all pre-painted and have amazing detail!

I didn't have the heart to permanently glue the wing into the fuselage so I took advantage of the fact that the wing fits into the fuselage like a glove and that my bottom balsa spar stuck out next to the wing.

I simply glued another short piece of light plywood to the wing and then screwed the two wood pieces together. The trailing edge is easily taped in several key areas.

The result is a removeable wing that is locked in place very solid. I suspect that I may be upgrading the stock Speed 300 motor to a Speed 280BB in the future. In this gearbox, the Speed 280BB stays running forward (CCW) and is a significant power boost.

    Looking good Greg!

I have mine up to installing the battery bulkheads. I hope to get those in tonight so I can confirm the CG location.

Before I glued the wing on, I installed the servos/pushrods and put everything together temporarilly to determined the optimum battery location to get the CG right. Then I cut the hole in the wing for the battery and then glued the wing on.

I handled installing the wheels a little differently than you did:
The wheels sat too deep inside the wing (even with part of the flange still attached). So, I put small blocks of scrap foam under them to raise them out of the wells by about 1/8". I'll try to post a pic or two when I get home from work tonight.

I finished off the bottom of the wing by attaching the long thin cover with servo tape. I think some of the bottm sections get reinforced by covering them with decals.

    Here is my component layout.

I deviated from the stock battery layout and simply put some sticky-back Velcro onto the wing top for my 3-cell Kokam 1500 pack. It balances nicely with the Kokam pack right against the receiver case.

The Speed 300 motor really max'es out at full throttle (10amps) so i'll have to limit this in flight to short bursts until the voltage drops some.

I still need to measure current with the stock 8-cell, 720mAh, NiMH pack.
