I have a small old timer Micro X kit of a Hornet. I think it was a Canadian design powered by a .21 or maybe a .29 gasser. About a 49" wingspan or so. I may convert it to electric as the smallest R/C engine I have is a .15 glow. It also has landing gear that is waaay forward. Wondering about putting landing gear further back to make it harder to ground loop. I have noticed that old timers with the gear that far foward are hard to control. I have to wonder, when they were used as a free flighter, did they ground loop? Or did they tend to come down nose down, bounce and flip over? Seems that a tri-gear set up with a long nose and short mains would have been better for these old timers.

I don't see a problem with moving the LG back a little. I pondered the idea with my Quaker, and it just didn't look right to me. I did cheat a little and added a steerable tailwheel instead of a skid originally called for in the plans.

I don't know the answer to your first question as I fly them R/C. I have a larger old timer with lots of wing area and good power. I face it into the wind on takeoff and hit the throttle. It only has about a 5 to 10 ft. takeoff roll, so ground loops have not occured yet on this plane.

The main reason for the forward landing gear in answer to your second question, was for such occasions when the plane did nose over for some reason, the prop had less chance of breaking. Look in the ad I posted above and you'll notice that the kit came with a prop 'blank'. You had to hand carve these babies, so what did you do to keep them from contacting the ground? Move the LG forward

I'm hoping that the larger engine in my Quaker will lessen the chances of ground loops etc. by having a shorter takeoff roll like my other old timer. A tri-gear setup wouldn't have done as well for protecting the prop.

Good luck with your Hornet, it's a fine looking model!

Absolutely beautiful! I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing this lovely bird take shape with your excellent craftsmanship. Thank you for posting these pictures.

BTW, my first ever experience with an OT model which I built 20+ years ago was with a .020 replica Quaker.

I covered the little model (my first in many years) with silk. Having no clue on where the CG should be I balanced it 25%, like a control line model . Having test glided and trimmed the plane I fired up the little Cox and set it free.

The small ship seemed a blur as it completed a loop ending in contact with my Buick

The silk covered model suffered no damage(!) and the Buick only a slight ding. I learned a good deal about CG placement from that brief flight

Thank you for the kind words. When I get the trim done, I'll post a couple more pics.

Wasn't that called a 'Quaker Oat' or something?

It's been awhile since I posted an update, but I have been doing some work on the Quaker.

The plane is covered and I'm basically finished with the trim. The first pic is an image of the
wing logo that I made in Microsoft Word, scaled it up and printed it out on my printer. The letters
were then placed over a sheet of MonoKote trim and cut out with an X-acto knife. The letters
were applied using Windex to allow accurate positioning of each item. As the Windex dries,
the trim adheres very well.

The second pic shows the Saito engine mounted (shoehorned actually ) in the plane. That's
one fine looking powerplant with the pushrod tubes and chrome valve covers!

The third pic is a close-up of the Saito engine designation.

The fourth pic is the Megow logo reproduction.

Next, I'll post some images of the finished product,

Scott

Thanks Evan! I know I'm way overpowered, but I'm looking into getting a Saito .30 for it in the near future.
The .40 will probably go on my 84" Flying Quaker. (kit is still on backorder) I'll just have to throttle back a bit
to keep the wings on.

You've got to post some pics of that big bird when you get it finished! What kind of electric motor are
you going to put in it?

sure glad you are enjoying the FLYING QAKER. had my 1st one ,MEGOW KIT, somewheres around 1937/38. bought an expensive BROWN JR. to power it. WW2 put it in storage and it diappeared, mom gave it to one of my freiends when they moved. have newer version with exposed rocker arm OS.60 with approx 50+ flights on it and ready to go any time.

Hey, GoldenAge, I'm glad to see you've been making fine progress. My Quaker Flash will likely be at Toledo this year (at least MikeSell's son Chris plans to take it), but if I can, I'm going to replace the K&B .20 that's in it with a HP VT .21. A 'Quaker Contingent' would be cool at the Nats, eh?

Doug,

It's almost finished and the cg came out right on the money with the placement of the radio gear. I haven't weighed it yet, but it came out pretty light, so the Saito will probably pull it straight up I'm really happy with the way the kit came out. I'll post some pics of the finshed product here soon.

Never been to the Nats, but sure would be nice to see some of the Quakers built by the fine folks posting on this forum.

I've finally finished this bird

All in all, I'm very happy with the way project went. The CG is 1/2" forward from the plan spec. I will have to add a very small amount of weight in the tail section to get things right. The Solarfilm with MonoKote trim covering went very well. Solarfilm requires a lot of heat to get the wrinkles out. You have to be patient with this stuff, but it is worth it. I broke in the Saito today and I have to say, this is one fine running little engine! Quiet too

Here are some pics of the finished product along with a shot of the engine running near the end of its first tank of fuel. I kept it around 4000 rpm's as per the owners manual instuctions.

Sure hope she flies as good as she looks!

Doug,

Yes, and she needed a couple of degrees more downthrust with the big engine. I took her out yesterday, but the winds were gusting pretty strong. The plane is highly visible against a blue sky with the yellow covering, so I can get her way up there and glide down.

Now, if I can just get a day with little or no wind........

Dick,

Thanks! She was a hit with the older fellows out at the field. One guy remembered building the original when it came out as a free flight back in 37'. I have the 84" version on backorder from Penn Valley Hobbies. I heard that some versions of this model had wing extension to 96", but the 84" is a real floater.

Thanks again for posting the pics, looks like you have quite a number of planes to fly

Taylorcraft1947 is taking mine to Toledo Saturday to enter in oldtimer, and I'm to bring it home Sunday. I hope he does well with it, as he's put a lot of work into the build and researching of that plane. He deserves a little recognition. Right now he's working on the SAE cargo lift plane at Cedarville.

Doug,

Good luck to Taylorcraft and the Flash at Toledo! I had a lot of fun building mine and will probably fit a Saito .30 or something smaller in it later. I would like to put the .40 in my scale Aeronca C3 which is also finished.

Sure would love to hear how things go at Toledo,

I'll let you know how it goes, Scott. I plan to go from the K&B .20 in mine to a HP VT .21 eventually.
