With the cost of GLOW fuel on the rise and the bigger glow engines using more, ( and I'm just not sold on gas as of yet) I have contemplated attempting to MIX my OWN..

Where do you get straight NITRO?

I think from what I've read you can buy METHANOL at an GO-CART or MOTORCYCLE shop.. same with oil/s..

I've checked the "SEARCH" feature here but did not come up with anything..

I'm sure their has to be many of you that mix your own, Do you have any info to pass on?

THANKS,

RON in NEVADA

If you have any speed shops in your area who are running a fuel dragster, they usually buy the good nitro by the drum. If they have it, they might sell you a gallon or two for your fuel mixing.
However, you will probably pay close to $30 per gallon, maybe more. You still need a good source for a good, moisture-free grade of METHANOl and CASTOR OIL and a good synthetic oil.
Most go-cart shops have KLOTZ oil in quarts. Some have the KLOTZ mixture in quarts which is 20% castor and 80% KLOTZ.
When you have bought all the chemicals you need and all the measuring equipment and all the mixing containers, you will be ready to mix fuel. Good luck.

Once you've found a supplier and mixed your first batch and discovered how EASY (and cheap)it is you'll be wondering why you ever bought the stuff

Do a WEB search for Klotz. They sell Nitro in gallon cans and the oil for model engines...Be ready for a HEALTHY HAZMAT charge...
They also have a list of distributers on their sight..maybe one in your area or close enough to drive to...

Then do a WEB search for methanol and see what they sell methanol in, 1 gallon, 5 gallon, or 55 gallon drums...and if you might have a distributor close to you...

The last nitro I bought was $30.00 a gallon, oil was $8.00 a quart
at Klotz they also have a great mixing chart for all glow engines to go by...

Methanol was $2.50 a gallon if I bought it 5 gallons at a time...
(I live about three miles from a place that supplies all the racing goodies and fuel to the drivers..)
or
Do a serch and find a distributor such a Morgan, Red Max, or your favorite and if you have a buddy that works at a business and would let you use his business address for shipping to and a dock to unload it on and a forklift....you can order a 55 gallon drum of your favorite and keep it at the house....but it best poured up when you get it to the house and stored in a dark place in the garage covered....to prevent the methanol from absorbing moisture every time you open the drum for a gallon..
Should work out to $10.00 a gallon for 15% nitro 18% oil...

But I do the Gas thing now and a all day supply is about $1.60...
I just stop at the local BP on the way to the field...put in the oil and put in a gallon of mid grade...

Hope this helps....

1.) Where do you get the Castor oil? Klotz Super Techniplate Oil is as much as nitromethane.
2.) Another question, is there a benefit to using synthetic/castor mix or just straight castor?
3.) Last question, RC fuel is nothing more exotic than Methanol, Nitromethane, and oil. There are no other addatives than that?

Thanks

There are only two absolute necessities for glow fuel...oil amd methanol. Nitro is just an additive to boost the power a little and the ego a lot
The only other common additives I'm aware of are Armorall to reduce (if not entirely eliminate) foaming and acetone which gives a smoother running engine and also reduces the ability of methanol to suck moisture from the air (2 to 3% is all that's needed).

The big brands offer special secret engine conditioners. They don't mention what they are. How about adding a touch of "slick 50"?

Where can you get "Castor" at a reasonable cost?

I have been mixing my own fuel for a while (no nitro at all). I have easy access to methanol (speed shop) and Oil (both castor and Klotz synthetic) via Scheafers hobby shop here locally. But they don't stock nitromethane. So I buy a gallon of 20% nitro fuel and mix it with 4 gallons of my home-brew fuel. I end up with 5 gallons of 4% nitro fuel. This little bit of nitro seems to make my OS 46 engine run better than if I run the no-nitro fuel. My larger Moki 180 runs great on the low nitro and even runs OK on the straight no-nitro stuff. Some smaller engines, like my Norvel .15 do not like the low nitro stuff, so I use the commercial fuel.
