I want to mix up some FAI fuel 0% Nitro. This is how I will be mixing it is it enough oil or to much oil is it enough methanol or to much.?

80% Methanol = 102.4oz

20% Synthetic oil = 25.6oz

You got it!

If you want to mix up any other combos check this fuel mix calculator.

If you are going to run this in a 2 stroke add a bit of castor to give you a safety margin on lean runs.

Here is the mix for 20% oil FAI with an 80/20% Syn/Castor oil package:

Methanol: 102.4oz
Syn lube: 20.48oz
Castor: 5.12oz

That little bit of castor will go a long way.

OK OK I know I've said it here before but this is one of my pet peeves

FAI fuel is 80% methanol and 20% pure unadulterated castor oil. Any other mix or percentage of oils and it's just a fuel with no nitro

Ok...by the book FAI is only castor and meth...however all fuel manufacturers call their 0% nitro fuel FAI, ex. Moran Cool Power FAI is 0% Nitro 80% Meth, 20% synth oil.

For sport flying its just better to have just enough castor to get its benifits.

Adrian, will the 80/20 work with all 2-stroke engines.? I have heard some say it is just for your bigger 2-strokes.

Usually an engine manual will tell you if it needs to run FAI or low nitro fuel. Most commonly available engines (OS, Thunder Tiger, Super Tigre, Tower, GMS, MDS, Evolution) are designed to run on 10-15% nitro as that is what is most commonly used in the US. Certain euro engines run better on low nitro (Moki, MVVS) 0-5%.

If you try to run too little nitro you will have problems getting a good low idle, transition will be ragged or slow and top end rpm will be lower than normal.

I run all my engines on 15% nitro. I won a jug of 10% at a fly in and I didn'y like it. I could see a diffrence in performance in flight.

I do have an MVVS .49 that is a monster on 5%. It was designed to run on it though.

Engineds that run on loe nitro have a different combustion chamber shape and diffrent needle tapers on the carb.

FAI fuel is laid down by the world governing body for all types of aircraft competitions including models (Federation Aeronautiqe Internationale). This particular fuel is only required in a couple of specific competitions such as FAI RC Pylon and FAI CL speed (and maybe some FF competitions).

Morgan fuels with their Coolpower and Omega "FAI" fuels not only use either a straight synthetic or a blend of synthetic/castor but it's only 17% anyway. This makes it totally illegal for any FAI event where FAI fuel must be used.
http://www.morganfuel.com/coolpower.htm
http://www.morganfuel.com/omega.htm

Powermaster make a true FAI fuel and have been selected to provide the fuel for the 2004 CL World Championships in Munci, In. They at least seem to know what an FAI fuel is
http://www.powermasterfuels.com/fai.htm

That said, a blend of 80/20 synthetic/castor would be just fine for sport flying. I'm just being picky because it annoys me when a major manufacturer misleads modellers into thinking that just because they leave out the nitro it immediately becomes an FAI fuel. I run all my engines, regardless of where they come from or what fuel they were designed to run on, with zero nitro and simply don't find a need for it.

Thanks for the info on true FAI fuel.

I run 15% in most of my planes because it makes more power and allows me to fly agressively with a smaller, lighter powerplant while getting the thrust of a bigger heavier engine.

This is why all pattern guys fly 30% nitro and why their YS engines are designed to run on 30%.

MonkeyBone,
If you want true FAI fuel, forget the synthetic oils. FAI fuel is 80% Methanol and 20%
pale press Castor oil.
We will be sponsor for the CL Nationals in Muncie in 2004 and the fuel will be mixed
before Judges. The Methanol will be checked as well as the Castor oil before mixing.
There can be no, imi. no additives in the fuel, just Methanol and Castor oil.
Hope this helps.

When you fellows are talking about adding a synthetic oil, what type of oil are you refering to? We've been experimenting with various oils but no success. Any brand names and weights would be appreciated.
