Hi,

I am looking for advises regarding paints to use for my P40E. The plane will be glassed and I plan to use a spray gun for painting but I don't know where to find the federal colors:
- Tan: FS30219
- Grren: FS34102
- Grey: FS 36622

Any idea ?
Thanks, Chris.

Chris Testors Modelmaster paints have the correct colors. You can obtain them at any Hodbby store. They also must be fuelproofed with a Flat Polyurethane clear (perfect Paints makes a perfect Flat clear that works well) or else you can contact the makers of Chevron Perfect paints for the correct colors. these are fuel proof from the Get go. PS Adjust the CG forward of the plans location by about 1 in. and Balance the airplane wwth the Gear retracted. Otherwiswe you'll be in for a nasty surprise when the Gear retract aft! GL it is a great flying airplane! (I'm on my second!)

Thanks Mike,

I thought that these Testors paints where only for small static models (1/2 oz can) ! Did you get them in larger volume ?
How much paint did you use for your P40 ?

Did you use a touch up spray gun or an air brush ?

Thanks, Chris.

Chris I used Pactra formula U polyurethane. Problem is they're not the correct colors. They are Flat Tan and OD green. THe Modelmaster paints I'm not sure of. Topflite used them on their prototypes. I'm not sure where they got the large Quantities needed. However THe Chevron perfect paints are available from most Hobby stores in Spray can and in pints for use with a spray gun. Chevron does have the proper colors in fuel proof paints. Lastly I didn't know this, but Curtiss actually used Masks in painting their P-40's so to have a correct camo Jod you should have sharp lines between colors! anyway good luck with it. it is a fun plane to fly!~

Attached is an image of a Byron P-40, I am working on, using Chevron Paints. The base coat is CHE 32 Middlestone, and the camo is CHE47 Zinc Chromate Type #1. The paint was applied using a touch up paint gun and compressor. The camo was applied in two stages. I airbrushed the outlines, masked the lines, then used a touch up gun to fill the dark green. I will clear coat with Hobby Poxy clear. I dont think these colors will win you any Top Gun contests but I think they will get you close for sport scale. You can always try to mix the color you want to get a more scale color.

I suggest you try Nelson Hobbies water based polyurethane paint. I used it on my TF P-40 and it came out great. It can be sprayed easily and it cleans up with water. Jerry Nelson can mix any FS number you want. www.nelsonhobby.com.

Good luck

Paul,

I went to the Nelson website, it seems that the custom colors are only available by quart which is I guess far too much (and expensive !) How much paint did you use ? A pint of each color ?

May be you didn't use custom colors but only standards, in this case which reference ?

"Perfectplanes's P40 looks nice, the colors are maybe not the officials but they look close to what I saw on TF box. Cheveron sells the paints per 8oz can, again same question, how much paint did you use ?

Thanks again, Chris.

Chris,

You should call Jerry Nelson. He may mix a smaller amount. I only bought pints of FS colors so he either mixed pints or had them already made up. I used less than a pint each of grey, tan and green. I then top coated mine with flat clear after I put on the decals. I used about a pint of clear, but I think I used more than necessary.

This is great paint and I highly recommend it. It goes on easily and cleans up easily. You need to thin it about 20-40% to spray so it goes a long way. Call Jerry on his toll free number and he will answer all your questions. He has been in this business for a long time and is interesting to talk to.

Check out www.iolair.com/rc for a couple of pictures of my P-40.

Don't worry about quantities with the Testors Modelmaster paint. Just buy 2 or 3 of the small spray cans. That's still cheaper than the Chevron or Nelson paint. I painted a Byron F-16 (74" long) with only 3 tiny cans of Model Master (plastic model) paint and the results were fantastic. It's very opaque paint so only one light coat does the job. I think the total cost was $12 for two shades of gray (2 cans light gray and 1 can dark gray), and an additional $10 for the Chevron clearcoat. And the best part: you can get this stuff at Walmart!

Nelson paint is outrageously priced in my opinion.

Yak,

You can find the Chevron clearcoat at Wallmart too ?

I plan to use a spray gun but you used spray cans and it seems to work !

I spell Cheveron and I notice that you and others spell Chevron with no "e", is it another brand or just a mispelled of the hobby polyurethane paints ?

Chris.

No you can't get Cheveron Perfect Paint at Walmart silly!...too bad huh? Walmart does have other brands of clear Urethane and polyurethane though but I'm sure you've been to Walmart so you already know that. I was referring to the Model Master paint being available at Walmart...

I'm pretty sure you can get both brands at Tower though which is almost as convenient. I would always recommend getting all of your supplies at your LHS if you have one...I am one of the many who has no LHS within a 90 minute drive. (3 Walmarts within 10 minutes though!)

As for Spray guns/compressors, I only use mine if I'm using paint not available in a spray can. Too much trouble. I am thinking of buying a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) system which supposedly works a lot better than your typical compressor/spray gun.

You are right...it's Cheveron not Chevron and their paint is named Perfect Paint.

Chris,

I used Super Coverite for the control surfaces. It went on OK but it is heavier than I would have preferred. If I do it again I will use something lighter, maybe Stits Light or Nelson Lightfab.

Another great source for paint is house latex. I use interior flat on my airplanes and then clearcoat with K&B epoxy, polyurethane or clear buterate dope depending on finisn desired. You can take your color chips down to the local Home Depot and they have a laser reader to match the color perfactly. The inerior dries fast and is very light as it covers really well. I used to get PolyS paint from the factory in 4oz bottle but it was fairly expensive. The latex is around $7.00 a quart so its pretty cheap. Don
