hate to say this, but no.
reason:
there are already too many really good fun flys to try to attend.
to have another one, just means that more folks have to chose between ones, and attendance at all suffers

corse, marc could climb on someone else's bandwagon and put his support into an existing fun fly.

Are there any big ones in new york, jersey or PA? We could get behind or co-op with one...certainly a possibility.

Well since you guys are in NJ why not talk to Jeff Green at Altech..
They are having the Hirobo Cup in Delaware at the end of August... Or why Not just go to MHA in June.. That is in Maryland.. not far for either... and the turn out on those FunFly's is very large --- 100+ Fliers at both...

Yes, I want to see a big funfly here in NJ , Maryland is the best on the east coast but it's in Maryland. Hirobo Cup is ook but it's a hirobo cup. I want a funfly that will attract CY,Todd B and others to it. Funfly's are not only about flying and seeing guy's flying but about promoting the hobby and making money for the LHS and LFF.

First off a Fun Fly is not about making money for the Local Hobby Shop. If it is a big event there will be vendors at the Fun Fly and the LHS unless he has a vendor setup also will not really make any money.
To hold a big event the person or CD that is going to put the event together needs to go to other events and start meeting pilots and get there addresses and info and ask them to try and attend your event your planning. I have been putting on an event hear in Alabama for 8 years. This past March we had 152 pilots attend, that has been our largest so far , the other years we had always had close to 90 pilots. This year we moved to a larger field and I worked extra campaigning to get pilots to attend. It worked and we had them here. Also you can not ask pilots like CY, TB, JK and few more to attend the event 2 weeks before it happens. You have to ask them 10 months to a year in advance.
Don't expect a big turnout if you just think you can say your going to have a funfly and pilots will come. I mail out over 200 personal invites each year to my event. Also a plus is that motels, hotels, food places are real close to the event site and not 1/2 hour or more away. There is a lot more to holding an event but that is just a few of the things I have mentioned.

Before you hold an event for the first time I would recommend attending several other events. I go to 15 to 20 heli events a year. In 2001 I drove over 20,000 miles attending heli events. That is how you get the word out about an event your having. If know one knows anyone putting on the event, not many pilots know to attend. I have already drove close to 5,000 miles this year attending events and now it is just getting into the meat of the event season. Also it is best to go around and see how other events are run. Also need to get AMA sanction for event at least 6 months prior. Some guys in Detroit are having there first heli event first weekend in June, it will be a big event because they have gotten out and done the legwork and communication nessecary to have a big event.

mainly,
the calendar is already prety crowded, at least during the good weather times, with established events.
it is generally accepted that ya need 2 weeks between events for most folk to recouperate the funds to do another one.
mothers day and fathers day are generally bad times to hold events, and someone already has memorial day and labor day events.

The Gaunlet was not a funfly, that was an invitation only freestyle/FAI type event that was organized by Chuck Wildey and Tom Unger. Both of them at the time was very active in the contest side of the hobby. Tom and Chuck are well known throughout the heli community.

Perhaps partnering or sponsoring/promiting a nearby event the first year at least would make sense. Seems to be rather time consuming and involved and would certainly need help from those in the know.

Mongo - what's wrong with beautiful lovely NJ We have refineries and swamps and other good stuff here we just don't brag about it
