Hi, I'm building a SIG Mid-Star kit and I plan to put on a Irvine .53 2-stroke engine on it. Some people suggested that the Irvine is a LOT of motor for the SIG since the Mid-Star is only 5-5.5lbs in weight. It's a shoulder-wing plane which can be built as a tricycle-gear version or a taildragger.

My major concern is the ground clearance. If I go for a tricycle-gear, the max. diameter of propeller that can be used is 11" or less while a 12" propeller to used for the taildragger. I intend to use a bigger diameter /low pitch propeller for slower speed for initial training.

Does anybody have experience of this combo? Any suggestions and recommendations are appreciated.

Richard

(for initial training) Is this your first plane? My mid star only lasted 4 flights 4 years ago because I wasnt ready for it. I had soloed and flew a trainer well, but the speed and the responsiveness had it on its back quickly. The Irvine 53 will move this plane pretty fast and this would not be the best training combo BUT If you have a lot of trainer/flying experience go ahead and make it a taildragger. It will be lighter and allow you to use a 12" prop. I would recommend the 12-4 or the 12.25 x 3.75 if you can fit it to keep the speed down somewhat

Hi smallfly,

Thanks for your response. I'm currently flying a SIG LT-40 high-wing trainer with a TT Pro46 on it. I already attempted 4 take-offs and 2 landings. I'm not sure if I'm ready to solo.

Anyway, I expect to train on my LT-40 for a couple of months more with a buddy box before I try to fly my Mid-Star. Well, what's your first plane and what's the major difference between a tricycle-gear and a taildragger? Take-off and ground steering?

Richard

BTW, I went the same path as you. LT-40 to Mid-star (as a taildragger). I have an OS .46FX in mine with an APC 11x7 on it. Flies it great as the OS will pull it going straight up.

Now that I've been flying awhile I STILL love to fly the Midstar. I've increased the throws as far as far as physically possible, moved the CG as far back as I can stomach, and it'll do all sorts of stunts.

It is a great taildragger plane to learn on also. Just be sure and put something like a Sullivan tailwheel setup on it.

I flew my Mid Star with a TT .46 PRO and it was more then enough power. I know a lot of people like to over power their planes, but I think that .53 would be a bit to much. Just my thoughts.

Hi Inorris,

This is exactly what I plan to put on. Did you install the steering spring into the rudder? If yes, which one did you put on -- the strong or the weak one?

I'll fly off grass. So what's the clearance of your taildragger? 12"?
BTW, did you find APC 11x7 too fast for the O.S. 46FX. My Irvine .53 has about the same BHP as the O.S. 46FX. Maybe a little more powerful and heavier. Have you tried anything in the 11" dia. with a lower picth such as a 11x6 or 11x5. How about a 12x4, 12x5 or 12x6?

Thanks for your info.

I tried quite a few props Master Airscrew and APC 10x6 to 11x8 and settled on the APC 11x7 because it seemed to have the best performance in the air. Going to less pitch didn't really gain me anything and I have yet to have anything flutter.

With 3 inch foam wheels, I have about 2 inches of prop clearance. I fly off of grass also and I usually don't have any problems unless it gets real tall.

And yes I put the stronger steering spring on. I have a standard 3004 servo on the rudder and haven't had any problems. Ground handling is excellent (just put the main gear on the right way or you'll have a lot of nose overs..) ;-)

Inorris,

Thanks for posting a picture of your Mid-star. It's a good looking aircraft. Good job!

I may want to use the decals SIG included in the kit. So, I'll probably cover the top using Bright Yellow and the bottom
Midnight blue for visibility purpose. Any tips on covering? This is my first covering job and I think ultracote is the easiest to apply. What do you think?

Grnbrt,

I appreciate your info. If the .53 is too much power, I may want to put the TT Pro 46 on it instead. I currently use it on my LT-40.
Since the LT-40 is a bigger plane, I'll install the Irvine .53 on it. A change of plan. What's your opinion?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I've used Monokote on everything so far as that is what my LHS stocks. I've heard good things about Ultracote though. Just depends probably on what you're used to.

I've done ok with it, but in general, I'm terrible at covering. The extent of my tips would be to use a sharp knife, don't cut yourself, and don't count on shrinkage to get wrinkles out!!

The Mid-Star 40 is one of the most underated models out there. Mine has a Tower 46 on it and will do anything in the book! I have the CG mover way back and the controls to the max. If you are not carefull where you put the CG you will end up with a plane that will spin to the ground when it gets wound up in a spin. Keep the CG mild and it is a great plane for slow easy flight, but with a 53 on it I am afraid you may have a combo for a great plane with a short life span!
