As any new beginner...well...i need some help also. My doubts goes between the three models form HPI:
.21 RTR : being discontinued but great prices on the web (350$). Does a less powerfull motor justify a price for a beginner?
.25 RTR: the most expensive but with Rotor start (500$). Why rotor start, if you go to a field you've got to bring batteries and etc. to start it?
SS .25 (not RTR): can a beginner assemble this? (400$)

Many thanks

The RTR Savage 25 is only about $425-450 at most places, and I think it's probably your best bet http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/hpi/hpic1832.html

The 21 IS slow, and it apparantly has a pretty common problem where it dies of fuel starvation certain times after the tank gets half empty.

And the Roto Start, like other starters, RULES!!!!! I don't know what kind of battery it takes, but assuming it's a rechargable NiCad or NiMH (probably 7.2V), you can easliy get one that will last at least a whole day. I couldn't imagine being stuck with just a pull starter, especially as a newbie & someone who's breaking in an engine for (probably) the first time.

i'm also new to the hobby and i'm getting the savage ss. many people say it is half the fun building the car and it is a great feeling of pride when you can say you built the truck. i'm getting it from ultimatehobbies.com. even though they aren't getting it in stock uintil 1020/03 it is okay for me because my mom won't let me buy it yet anyway. ultimatehobbies.com has the ss priced at $330.

as for the problem with the fuel not getting to the engine when it is half empty i am going to do the dual fuel tank mod that may people have been talking about and that will not only increase the soze of the fuel tank but it will also make you able to use all of the fuel without any problems.

I THINK that the Savage fuel problem has been cleared up & neither the SS or S-25 should create any trouble in that area!!!!

And I see lots of Savage guys asking when the new tanks that are being used on those models will be available as an accessory, as apparantly you can drop them in your old S-21 models & take care of your problem.

But don't let me dissuade you from creating a complex, customized system! That's half the fun , and you WILL get an awfully long run time.

C'mon, a BEGINNER wold really be better served with the 25. Yes, you learn about your truck better when you build it, but that really can wait until his 2nd truck.

I'm starting to notice an amusing trend I see all the time on my woodworking board. A newbie says "what's the best table saw I can get for $500 or less?", and you get 15 guys saying "save up & get a Powermatic 66 cabinet saw [for $2200, and weighing about 450lbs!]

Besides, what advantages does the SS have over the 25, if any??? And according to one guy on this thread, the 25 has a perfect gas tank while the SS is still suspect.

As an FYI, I'd also like to know the main differences between the SS & 25, not just advantages!!

Just remember if you get the Savage SS, you still have to purchase the electronics if you don't already have them. You may also want to review Nov 03 Xtreme RC Cars which did a review of the SS and their cost as tested as well as review HPI's website which details the difference between the .21 RTR, .25 RTR and SS.

Tower has the Savage 25 for $404.99 with the $25 off Coupon in October.

Thursday night I was at my LHS and a employee said that the Savage SS had some sort of recall for something has anyone heard of that?

It's not a recall..just a warning about tighteneing the screws on the rear plate of the engine. It's on the HPI site..

No biggie..just do it..

the ss is a pullstart i think.....while the 25 rtr has the roto start....i think the ss also comes with a better pipe than the rtr...i think, for a beginner, you'll be better off with an RTR...21 or 25 ? it's up to you...both good trux...i have the 21 rtr but is now a .26 (picco) with an ofna tank (125ml)...never have any problems with my fuel....if you are a real newbie, the 21 will be fast enough to satisfy u i think. just get the ofna tank (cheap) and maybe replace the hexes. you'll still end up with some $$$ for hop ups.
