Kmot, at least here in California, the old style stinking parts dip is history. I liked the little wire basket that came in the gallon can. I tried to get some at the local NAPA some time back and they just laughed. It's not environmentally friendly I guess.

Dart373, if it's an old engine that hasn't run for years, and is gunked up inside, I disassemble it before the treatment. I have just removed the carb, backplate and glowplug, and dropped the assembled engine in before without problems. I don't think a low heat crockpot bath will hurt the o-rings. I rinse with cold water then used compressed air to blow out the water. Then a good spray with WD-40 and more air. After reassembly, I then finish with a good shot of after-run oil and work it around for good coverage inside. (On four strokes, I also remove the valve covers).

TimC:

Bummer! Gone as so many other good products that have gone by the wayside. I still have a small stash of it. Better use it conservatively now.

What happens when the varnish that has built up on a 2-stroke piston is removed with the crockpot? Will the piston to sleeve fit now be slightly looser????

Thanks,

Ernie

Ernie...that's where it can get a little tricky.

I recently did a YS .45 that had (still has ) great compresion. I decided not to disturb the cyl. / piston for that very reason.
The piston had quite a bit of dark brown varnish, and only a little bit came off during a 24 hr. soaking. I even turned it over while soaking to see if any would come off.

I think it depends on just how much and how old and "baked on" the pistons varnish is. This YS is about 10 yrs. old, and the guy I got it from used all castor fuel.

TomK, if the engine is locked up, and / or really gummy I will dis-assemble it. Sometimes I will do a "2 step" job on one. I will soak it first to get the exterior grunge off, then dis-assemble to do the inside.

I was given a shoebox full of engines that were run on all castor fuel and hadn't seen the light of day for at least 20 years, and a few hadn't been run since the early 60's.
The crockpot of antifreeze freed 'em all up and they're all ready to go again.

Can you guys in California still get "Gummout" carb cleaner? We still can in NY (for now anyway ) and it's just as good as Chem-Dip...only thing is is it evaporates so quickly, you need most of a spray can to do a decent job. (and it's rather messy / smelly)

Oh, and you can make a parts washing basket out of brass window screen, and use wire for a handle to suspend it in the antifreeze solution so the gunk will settle to the bottom, and your parts won't be sitting in a layer of crud, and you don't have to go "fishing" for 'em!

Ernie, it depends on the engine. If my engine is running fine but, I want to clean the exterior, I just pull the piston an cylinder and sit them aside during cleaning. If the engine has considerable carbon/varnish build up (running hot or a decline in power) I will put all the parts in the crock pot. I have never had any engine run worse because I cleaned it and removed built up varnish. On my ringed engines, I have particularly noticed they run much better after a good cleaning.

Proptop,
If you use Demon-Clean engine cleaner, you can easily clean the outside of the engine without worrying about removing or touching any of the piston varnish.
Go here to find it: http://www.starcomposites.com/BJModelEngines/ , they do not have it on the webpage so call / email them.

Proptop: I believe we still have Gumout but many products formulas have changed over the years. A lot of the newer stuff I find very lacking in their ability to actually do any worthwhile work.

I need to get into this antifreeze thing as I also have a box of old engines. Without reading the entire thread can I ask a question? Do you use antifreeze straight or mixed 50/50? Can I use an outside burner on a BBQ on very low flame in lieu of a crockpot?

Kmot, 50-50 works fine. It needs to be the old ethylene glycol though. As long as the heat can be kept low enough, I don't see why a pot over a burner wouldn't work.

Dear Kmot & TimC:

The PIPE Here once more...To Kmot: I'd STILL prefer to use something that's ELECTRICALLY heated, instead of an "open flame" type of heating, to clean one's engines in antifreeze !!!

And to TimC...if there is ANY possibility of a pet OR child getting near the whole cleaning operation, my "Post No. 20" in this thread is simply a MUST-DO...using PROPYLENE glycol antifreeze WORKS JUST AS WELL as the TOXIC ethylene stuff...just do a search for posts by someone named "Gill" here at RCU, and ask HIM by Email or PM what he's used for antifreeze in HIS crockpot when cleaning model engines, and I'd bet you'll find HE uses the propylene stuff just as I do!

If' you'd like, I can Email you a COMPLETE set of procedures I use when crockpotting a four stroke engine in propylene glycol antifreeze (the brand at http://www.sierraantifreeze.com/ is what I always use for model engine cleaning)...so PLEASE..."leave the ethylene stuff OUT of the procedure", and use a much SAFER proyplene glycol antifreeze in that crockpot instead!

You NEVER know WHO might get near the potful of antifreeze during the cleaning process...the propylene stuff is JUST that much safer!

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!
