looks like you have all of your time allocated there Super... Racecars and free time dont mix, I know...

We were kinda discussing the subject of Vintage Combat on Flightlines before it went "poof!" I would be more interested in flying the oldies with newer engines... check out my signature below, there is a beginning discussion on Vintage stuff there (new Control Line only forum)

We were discussing "Goblin Combat" on the Combat-L mailing list about 3 weeks ago. Replica scaled down old timers using the cheap Bigmig .061, flown on .012x42 foot lines. Kinda like Larry Renger's Leprechaun Stunt.

We're on groups.yahoo.com.

Had a similar experience with a Johnson CS. Got a brand new one on the PX when I was at Wheelus AFB and a Top Flite Combat Cat kit to go with it. Just think, a $3.98 kit that gave you TWO planes. Anyway, while trying to break the engine in on the main available fuel, 20% castor and 80%methanol, the con rod broke. Sent the engine in to Johnson, and while waiting, welcomed a new member to our base club who had just happily arrived from stateside. In the course of BSing, found out fromhim that Johnson had gone out of business several months before (News traveled slow by APO). However, about a month later, found a box at the post office that not only had my repaired engine, but a second Combat Special and a letter of appology. Had 2 combat cats both with new engines. Life is sweet, sometimes.

It was a real nostalgia trip for me reading this thread. Memories of building all week doping on Sunday morning infront of the electric fire. [ any one else do that ]. I Started flying combat in the 60s with George Copeman tuned Oliver Tigers in the UK. I finished up flying my own design models were derivatives of the Dominator layout. Arguments over who designed the Warlord dribble on. I tried a couple of fast F2D models but the carnage rate depressed me. I also had a Kit Voodoo with a Fox 36 combat special square venturi which I used on demos. Loud and fast.

40 + years later I am still flying combat as it gives a bigger adrenaline rush than anything else but it is 12th scale RC combat. No wussy 2 up stuff, they fly 6 or 7 streamer towing 15 to 25 powered WW2 replicas going for each other. To coin a phrase it is ' well mental'.

For nostalgia I still have a profile Peacemaker which gets aired a couple of times a year.

I still have a NIB Veco .35 combat engine.

These engines were delivered with a "C" painted on the bypass so it is very rare to have one of these engines with the original letter still present as fuel would immediately make it go away.

The 36X is fairly robust on a pressure system, particularly the needle bearing model. The BB's ran a touch faster, but cost more. I had a number of both flavors in combat rigs in the 70's and they all were OK.

The G21 Tigre's were notorious for puking their crank's and shredding rear bearings when run with the big venturi and higher nitro on pressurized systems -- however they would outrun the .36X by a tad. If you keep the RPM's down with a 9X6 or so and use lower nitro (10% range) they'll hold together much better. The trick to starting a pressurized Tigre is often to flip the prop backwards rather than forwards. Forward flipping usually works OK with the Fox's. Occasionally I fly a tank pressurized G21Tigre in an old Magician. With a 9x6, even on 10% nitro fuel it drags that largish thing around at an impressive pace and will yank your arm off.

In reality, any of the motors you mentioned will have the VooDoo stepping out at a very respectable pace. If you've never flown a fast combat model before go with the small venturi, a 9x6 and 10-15% nitro and have some fun. The VooDoo is ancient, but I've logged a lot of hours on'em and if its going too fast, it'll get you into trouble real quick.

If you want to risk the G21 .35 (I wouldn't because crankshaft parts will be hard to find these days), the big venturi, 40% nitro and an 8X8 prop will give you quite a thrill ride. On a VooDoo, that combo would be topping 100mph and be a handful.

Heh, I've got a stack of Dominators under construction right now. No old diesels for them though, but I do have a pair of old G15 Tigres that will probably make'em fairly quick.
