I've been wanting to build this for years - - I enlarged a freebie plan of it from a German magazine (Flug & Model Technik) up to what I thought was 'original' size, roughly two meters. I have a pair of HB .25's that I hoped to use in a twin, the Cougar if possible.

Has anyone had any experience with this aircraft, and any comments as to the power it needs?

Thanks very much.

Peter:

Cougar. F9F. Swept wing version of the Panther. Single engine.

There was another very similar airplane with twin engines, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Bill.

The Grumman American Cougar appeared as a construction article in the August 1980 RC Modeler. They may have reprints and full size plans.

OK folks,

Sorry about my earlier comment. I didn't know of the piston twin Cougar.

Bill.

Been a few years since the last post - but I just came across this so - for what it's worth..

I built the Cougar from RCM plans -
I'll go into details if anyone is interested.

IT FLEW VERY VERY VERY WELL.
I was told it was a fantastic Sky King impersonation(Iknow, not the same plane)
A never had an engine out with it. (pair of OS engines)
It was just a great airplane, but I sold it to someone who made an affer I couldn't refuse.

I have pics and lots of details if anyone is interested - just lemme know -

Gerry

It's always interesting to read & see pics of different twins, this is
definately a plane I would consider building as all of Dennis's planes
seem to be excellent fliers.

The full-size Grumman GA-7 Cougar was designed from the ground-up as a twin; it's not based on the Tiger/Cheetah. It was very well designed, and has a Vmc a few knots BELOW stall speed. But the timing was terrible, being introduced just as GA was beginning it's long, slow decline. Only 115 were built in 1978-79. It's only been involved in three fatal accidents in the U.S. in over 33 years of flying, an amazing record. I'm sure it would be a fantastic model.

I'd love to have one, but I can only only afford half of a 1957 Cessna 172 right now! Russ Farris

Bill -
  Thanks for the interest!
I'll look for the best pics to scan, and try to post them up here this week.
You know, now if I take a picture it's already digital, finding and scanning older pictures can be a pain!

Gerry

I have to dig out and scan to get the photos online, but I hope to do that soon.
Weight , ready to fly was 8 1/2 lbs. - Yes, I used a bit of contest balsa to keep it as light as possible.
Power was  (2)  OS .25 FSR turning Master airscrew 9x6's.
The 2 OS 2 strokes really put out the power, and are the SAME as in the prototype that was featured in RCM.
I also had the Goldberg retracts, just like the prototype, I would not do that again. (2 retract servos).

I sold it to the brother of a good friend of mine who "had" to have it right when I needed some cash.
Anyway, photos to come, and thanks for asking!!

Gerry

I have been told that the one I am interested in is 2.5kg fuselage and 3.2 kg wings. about 6kg ready to fly which is about 13.2 Lbs. Seems a bit heavy. Bill
