My epoxy glass Yellow Spit horizontal stabilizer has a twist of at least 1/8 inch. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Perhaps Yellow Aircraft has a problem with their mold?
I would email them but they just don't seem to have an email address on the web site.

Not to fault YA, because their kits are great, but in my experience they cannot tell you a whole lot technically about their kits.

Case in point:
My flying buddy had a YA P47 that he built. It required a large amount of down elevator to keep it flying level. We immediatly suspected the horizontal stabilizer incidence was way off, which it was. Gave YA a call and talked to Charlie, he was clueless, didn't have any idea what the horizontal stab was supposed to be set at. He said just cut out the holes around the fairings and install it. When he learned the P47 in question had a G62 installed in it he immediatly zeroed in on that as the problem.

When I built my P47 I made a point of zeroing the stab relative to the wing, and it flies just fine with a minimum of trim input, with a G62 also.

Thanks Vince,
It's not a big deal as I can build up a stab easy enough. It's just that I spent a lot of time wondering why the elevator mass balance leading edges wouldn't sit level and after many hours of checking finally decided to check the stab.

It occurs to me that if the mold is faulty other builders may have the same problem and this post may save them some head scratching.

Merlin, I never checked for warps but the stab on my Yellow Spit was so wavy that I replaced it with a built up unit. This has the added benefit of allowing a scale, gapless hinge and is lighter if you get rid of those stupid plywood cores for the elevators. I used a set of Brian Taylor plans and scaled up the stab to fit. Best of luck, Chad Veich.

Great minds think alike Chad.

I have also made a new stab from the Taylor plans and took the opportunity to arrange the gapless hinge as per full size as well as correct the outline to something closer to scale.

I used a new piece of ply but removed half of it with lightening holes. I just love the crisp trailing edge that the thin ply allows.

On another subject, thank's for the rundown on vac forming. Thank's to you I am now the owner of a vac form setup and am busy making all kinds of gizmos. Great stuff!

Depending on how its been sitting inside the packaging, it could twist and reshape itself... just one of the problems with polyester glass parts... I had to clamp the left glass elevator on my p47 because it was not symetrical as the right. I had to do this after it was hinged.

hate those polyester parts

No excuses here, I am rebuilding this P47 to my specifications... or should I say my flying abilities. This way it will take the punishment from my pattented landings... The retracts are now plenty strong...

I also took out the glass ailerons, they weigh in at 1 lb compair that to new balsa ones I just made at 2oz. I'll have to scrape of about 1lb of excess lead on the nose.

Hoping to paint it this week and have a couple of flights in before CASTLE.

hey vic, thanks for the tri-tip lunch today. when i left your garage i went to mine and started on repairing the yellow spitfire stab that got wacked in the crash. i was so intent on fixing the busted rib and stab that I did not realize how wavy that dang stab was. i sanded all the paint off and spent ten minutes looking at it thinking am i gonna build a wood stab or just go with this one. it would probably be o.k. until i got into high speed. i really don't want to spend the time building a new one but i guess i will have to. what do you think? i really can't believe that after YA did sucha nice job on the fuselage that they would skimp on the tail feathers. let me know your thoughts.
Scotdog...... peace

Its a bit of work making the stab, you'll have to make some ribs and get the correct height. You have the MK9 Taylor plans, you can actually enlarge it a bit and use that. You'll have to pay attention to the differences on the counter balance, its a bit different on a MK9 than Yellows MKXIV. If you can fix it without too much weight added on, then go for it... you need all your efforts to keep the tail lite as much as possible. In any case you'll be adding nose weight, hopefully not too much. I have yet seen a perfectly balanced YA Spitfire. Let us know how the Century Jet Spit wing fits the Yellow fuse????

Your welcome, I told you I am a good cook! yum yum!

Vic

ps. Don't tell anyone...I got the tri-tip from Cosco, pre merinated and ready to cook on my grill

Somebody must be building a Mk21 Spit! Nice choice scottdog. I had the Century Jet Kit but passed it on to a friend as I have too many of Vic's Spits to build as it is! However, if you're thinking of cutting that fuse down and making a Mk22-24 let me know. I have a plug for vac forming the bubble canopy that was made by Top Gun competitor Frank Thomas for one of his modified Platt Spitfires. I have visions of a Mk17 Seafire someday so he passed the plug on to me. Best of luck, Chad.

Chad, do you know anything about Eubelacher's Spitfire (I don't think I got his name spelled right)? I saw he had a contest plane of the spit about 80' inch. I forget the model magazine it was. Any thoughts on what the mark it was? They said he was to be kitting or producing plans for it.

Vic, Sepp Uiberlacher's Spitfire is a Mk16. Externally the same airplane as the Mk9 but usually with the cut down rear fuse and bubble canopy per Sepp's prototype. This is what I plan to do with one of your fuselages and I will get the canopy for Sepp's airplane as it is identical in size to the Taylor airplane. In fact, if you look at Sepp's plans (I have a set) you will immediately recognize that Sepp copied most of Taylor's engineering, they are very similar. All of Sepp's plans and accessories are now handled exclusively by Unitracts in the UK. Regards, Chad.

Chad, thanks for the info.

Hurry up on that spit... you should just slap one together and enjoy it while you work on another very detailed version.

Vic, I have a hard time slapping anything together but I'm thinking you may be right on this one. I'm waiting for Lenny to give me the bad news on the gear so I know how much $$$ I'm going to have to scrape together. Of course, you'll have to promise to make me another fuselage down the road somewhere to replace the slapped together one!

PS- Get yourself down to Chino this weekend. Word is that Stephen Grey from England will be doing an aerobatic routine in the MkIX Spit at the show. I've seen a video of his aerobatic routine and I can tell you that I'm crying because I can't make it!
