Just recently aquired a Master Scale P-51 with some older Rhom retracts. In the manual it mentions using r-12 freon for pressure to operate. R-12 is not so ready available anymore. Is there a substitute?? Thanks, Jack Y. Erie, Pa.

Yazman39,
There is plenty of substitute. The Rhom retracts will work fine with plain old air just like Robart or Century jet retracts. You may need a larger canister reservoir to have safe capacity. Pete

I put in a drop or two of refrigerant oil now and then to keep the seals lubed. Have been flying the same set for eight years now. I just use a Robart hand pump and go to 100 psi.

Jack, I built one of these kits 20 years ago and flew it on an OS .91. Flew great. I also have another kit with all of the options in my secret stash. The Rhoms worked great but you have to get some positive flats filed where the gear legs fit on the shaft. I would use some JB Weld on everything once you get it set up. I like air tool oil to lube my gear. Don

Don,
Thank you for the response. The plane came with an O.S. 91, and I was a little concerned about whether that would be enough engine. The plane is not complete, maybe 75%, and I was weighing parts, seems to be 15 lbs. or better. Does that sound right? Oh well, I need to worry about the other 25% that needs to be finished. Can always put a bigger engine in.
Thanks again,
Jack Y. Erie, Pa.

Jack, That does sound a little on the heavy side. I think mine came in at about that finished. It is one of the most scale Mustang kits ever produced. I just wish it was in the 85"ws range as then it would be a killer model. I picked up my kit from Jim Meister in1982 and was the first customer to build one. It won 1st place Precision scale at the 83 IMS show in Pasadena. Did a Malcolm hood B model of "The Deacon" flown by Howard Hively. Flew it a couple of times and sold it to a friend of mine who still has the airplane. I learned a lot of scale techniques building that airplane. Don
