Subarubrat, I didnt know you had a DVII with a conversion on it. Cool. Here are a couple........well, all mine are conversions.

Yep, I had finished the frame-up and never completed the job until I ended up with an extra GX35 and it had to go somewhere. A great engine and a great plane. The DR1 has the most striking appearance and once in the air is a good plane. But I suck at getting it off the ground and often have 2~3 attempts before it flies. But I think I am in good company because others report similar odds and landings are also a complaint but I seem to bring it down smoothly.

I've got a Homie 30cc in my Extreme Aircraft Cap 232 and a Homelite 33cc in a Kankge Rearwin Speedster. The Speedster flies great, very scale like. The cap is still on the bench. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks how it flies. I don't expect to be able to do 3D, but I think it will fly basic aerobatic manuvers.

KMM,
Is the Ryobi an easy fit in the Great Planes PT-19? Would either the short or long shaft engines work o.k.? Am thinking about this model as my first large gasser
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve, yes fits no problem at all. Long or short shaft will work just as well as each other. It's a really good first gasser plane as it fly's like a big trainer but looks way better. Good luck with it.

my conversion has generated a lot of positive and negative feedback lol. the engine is a CRRC Pro GF45i. it used to be a spark ignition engine. but as you can see from the photos ive converted it to run methanol and a glow plug. fuel is straight methanol/synthetic oil at 40:1. the carb has had no internal work other than removal of the filter screen and reseting of the needle valve arm. it is methanol compatable out of the box.

the adaptor is one that i machined up myself. i also know of another of these engines that has been converted as well....i sold him one of my adaptors!!!. performance is great...pulls like a train and a rock steady idle. it runs a 20x8 bolly carbon prop at 7800rpm all day everyday. it develops just over 12kg's of static thrust. airframe weighs 8kg's. we've worked out its making around 5.5hp in its current configuration.

airframe is a Pro Built Extra 300SP. 84" wingspan. it also has a smoke system installed. the whole package flies like a dream although im still learning with it lol.

cheers

hardtop: If methanol is cheap there....seems like a great idea to me. What do you see as a drawback? Thanks Capt,n

a drawback??......hhmmmmm

i havent personally run into any drawbacks with my engine so far. although i have had to give advice on one of these engines that refused to start....was found to be the internal needle valve arm set too low and so no fuel would flow. it now runs fine.

on the costs of fuel.......for me methanol is relatively cheap as i mix my own fuel and i can obtain it through my drag racing contacts. where i live petrol for a car costs more per litre than methanol.

another drawback ive seen is the unacceptance of running this fuel in a walbro carb. the general consensus seems to be that the methanol will "eat out" your carb. this is totally untrue. however....if you try to use nitro in the fuel THEN it WILL "eat" your pump valves and diaphragm very quickly. it is the nitro that causes the problems...not the methanol.

the only other drawback i see is the issue of obtaining an adaptor. while CH Ignitions do market these i found that at the time i needed one in a hurry and so i machined up my own.

while the above mentioned arent major drawbacks per say they are issues that can slow you down from completing your installation.

cheers
craig

ok so im a plane junky, i have recently embarked on conversion engines, i have had a 120 size cap 232 hanging in my room for some time now, wife let me buy it on our honeymoon believe it or not, it had a 120 surpass yuck no vertical just flat line flying, havent been able to get the mula to get a big glow so i recently saw on this site converting weed wackers and chainsaws, im hooked, i have spent the past weeks untill 2 am working on my 3.3 homelite, swapped soldering job on an antenna for it. its been a ton of fun working on it think it comes out to 50 couple ccs the only trouble ive had was cutting all the excess junk off of it fins, all the stuff mounted to the crancase cover and replaced the rubber hose mouted carb that goes over the reed valves, have motor mounts for it all welded up im hopefully gonna fire it up tommorrow, look out fellas ill never buy another zdz for as little as i have converted my new engine for, any ideas on what prop to run on it? have fun and anyone put a conversion on a showtime 100?

as far as this is concerned....and this is only my opinion....to minimise the chance of reciever problems make sure you use a resistor plug. next use a braid around the plug lead and ground it at both ends. finally use a fully shielded sparkplug boot. this should help lessen the chance of you losing your aircraft because of ignition noise.

also dont use any metal fittings to connect your throttle servo to your carb. keep your reciever and throttle servo AT LEAST 12 inches away from your ignition system...this includes the battery and switch that is used in cdi systems.

i have personally had more success from using a pcm reciever than a normal fm reciever.

cheers

Or just get rid of the ignition system.
