There is an in depth discussion of Lithium-Ion at the Battery Clinic.

The absolute minimum is 2.2v/cell. I have been running li-ion on my 35% Giles, last time flying I had over 100minutes flight time and voltage was at 7.45, 7.47, 7.85. Two recv'r packs (1630mah each) and 1 ignition pack (830mah).

Here's a link to info at panasonic. http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/battery/oem/chem/lithion/index.html

Are you running the protection/safety circuit? IF yes, it will prevent discharge below a level that will damage the battery.

Sanjoh:

Many thanks for the reply. The link to the Panasonic web site is a wealth of information on this battery type. Now I just have to digest it. The 2.2V/cell minimum is what I was trying to determine.

Red's reply lead me to his battery clinic info which yielded a write-up about the protection circuit which was informative but didn't provide numerical values.

Currently, I'm not running Lion's in my RC equipment but was considering it. I've had good results with my Sony Digital camera & my JVC camcorder. But the camcorder batteries last only about 2 years. The Panasonic web page indicated I could expect only 500 cycles of a Lion pack. So maybe I just reached the limits of cycles...

Thanks again, Jim

Glad to help.

I'm trying to figure out the failure mode on the li-ion. I have around 30 2 cell packs from parkflyers to gassers. I have had one battery on a cell phone that quit, it would not take a charge, no partial performance it was just 0 voltage.

How did your camcorder batteries quit?

The failure mode seemed to emulate the memory of a NiCad in that after charging the Lion lasted but a few minutes before the low voltage circuit warned the batter was discharged.....

So I wonder how does one treat such a batter to insure a long life?

If I were to use such a battery on an airborne pack, I'd use it with a 2nd backup battery only... LOL, Jim

That mode is consistent with what I've learned as well. The battery would have failed with a load attached.

A couple of things I do to maintain the batteries: keep count on number of charges per battery, measure the capacity.

I run parallel batteries in larger planes.
