What an awesome plane!! It is such a sweetheart to land with those big flaps, drop to hi-idle then throttle up and adjust from 10 ft hi or so.Mine makes an awesome whistling sound even on landings. 91 is running great even with just four tanks thru it.Using a graupner 13.5x8 prop,12x8 break-in,2 tanks.Climb is already good and there is a lot of needle left. Bounced around a bit in the 15mph turbulent winds, lots of aileron, needs to be tuned down more than I had.Using flight modes on the JR 10sx11.
Slowed the flap speed way down but when I swiched modes it was back to normal speeds, hmm, more reading. 3.5" Kavan
wheels from HOB LOB are wide, handle the grass and deer piles reallywell. They're also light. Now that the jinx is over I can take some pictures. Built the Bonnie version, razorback.

Would you post a picture of your TF P-47D? I'm really interested in this plane. Probably it's going to be my 4th plane.

Currently, I'm flying a SIG LT-40 trainer and building a SIG Mid-star 40. I wonder what plane I need to fly as a third plane in order to get into flying warbirds. How about a Super Chipmunk90s? What's your path?

Richard

Richard,

I am flying an Ultra Stick and it is a ton of fun to fly, and gets away from the 'trainer' flight characteristics... since it has a symetrical airfoil. I flew this plane for 3 weeks, and was able to fly my friends TF 60 Corsair around with no problems at all... little different, but as far as weight, they were about the same and both landed almost identical, the corsair needing a little bit more power, but that's it. I'm hoping to aquire a TF Spitfire here soon... just have to find the time to build it So that's my path to a warbird... never flew a trainer like in your case, just a Stick.

The TF kits are great in my opinion, if you build one i'd suggest glassing it instead of monokote, you'll be thankfull you did.

Best of luck to you and your P-47 when you get to it.

Happy Flying!

hi tapio, your jug sounds great, was just wondering if you hooked up the control horns on flaps per the plans. i couldn't seem to get the tension right on mine and altered it. was afraid of flutter. i glassed mine and it is over 12 lbs with a saito 120 and still waiting to test it out. its the one in pic on left....-Tinman-

Tapio,
Thanks for the report. I'm days away from my test flight. I build the Bubble version and and running a Saito 100 w/ CJ retracts.
Your information is encouraging. I'm hoping to come in at around 9lbs.

I've flown over 10 years and this is my first warbird. There is a big jump up in detail. Retracts, tons of servos, etc. So be patient, its not the plane to work on till 4 in the morn. THE WORST is the first few flights so get somebody you trust with a buddy box when you have your first flights. Working on the pictures, my buddy has the digital cam. Sure looks awesome with the sun on it sitting on the green.
I used the standard flap hookup but I see where your coming from tinman. I used one servo per aileron though, HT 225s.
Had to trim left aileron but I didnt do a lateral balance.
Off to work, its raining anyways-have to dream of the next project!

thx tapio, i ended up installing servos with hatches for all wing controls (4) and standard horns on the flaps/ailerons. it wasn't intended for show but i am sure it will last longer and it surely won't flutter now...-Tinman-

Tinman:

I hooked the flaps up on mine as per the instructions and I did not experience and flutter. Mine weighs in at 12 pounds and it is also glassed. This is a great flying warbird.

Tapio:

I also finished mine in the Bonnie scheme. I used Flite Metal aluminum covering, model master paints, and Lusterkote flat clear. I have panel lines and 1000's of flush rivets. I weather it by wet sanding it with 600 grit and then sprayed a gray wash over it. Then I wet sanded that with 600 grit and the finish came out nice and weathered. The picture doesn't show the detail very well. When the picture was taken, I had not applied the finish on the vertical stabilizer yet. Can't wait to see yours.

Guys I have a question for you.

I'm building one of these now and just epoxied the tail surfaces on. After it has dried I just don't trust it! It looks flemsy. I have a good joint and expoy cover. I'm I just paranoid and did you feel the same way?

Brian:

I epoxied my tail feathers on per the instructions. I did make a mistake in cutting the sheeting on the vertical stabilizer too short. I filled in the gap with epoxy mixed with milled fiberglass. I used Evercoat (an auto body filler) to make the fillets. Mine seems to be very strong. After the epoxy dried, I tried to see if I could twist the vertical stab off and the fuse started to flex but the stabilizer stayed secured.

I'm seeing the fuse flex and kept telling myself that it will be ok once I got it complete. Thanks for the reassurance.

BTW- The pics I've seen look great!

Thanks. Is the fuse completely sheeted yet or do you need to sheet the bottom of the fuse? Once I sheeted the bottom of the fuse it became very solid. I also glassed the fuse with 3/4 oz glass. After that, the fuse felt like it was one solid piece of wood. If you have any more questions feel free to email me. Good luck.
