I dont think the DA 50 would be enough, that plane is realistically going to be 20lbs. A 70-80 would give you better performance, and probably be a lot more happier.

Personally, I think that any 50cc engine is going to be on the low end for top performance on this plane. The 30% Cap will weigh in around 20 pounds. I would say try to put a 60 or 70 in it.....or if it will fit, the ZDZ80. The reason I suggest the ZDZ80 is because it has the same physical dimensions as the 60, weighs aboutthe same, and would provide you with an engine that could be moved to a larger airframe later on. I do not know if it would fit though.

Won't be enough. I started out with a 3W-70 twin in mine and it wasn't enough for 3D. I put a BME 102 in it and it was a perfect match. If you want to go single cylinder, the ZDZ80 would probably be a good choice too.

Good Luck ...

Thanks guys, it looks like I will be building a Midwest CAP then.

Anything bigger than a 50 just scares my wallat too much!

Thanks for the replies!

If you want a cap for the 50, IMO I think the 80" Hangar 9 cant be beat, and flys better than the midwest. Plus, its $300, a great deal. Perfect for a DA50

How does it fly better than the Midwest? Nearly identical airframes, same designer. Also look at the Hobby People Cap - a recovered H9 at 200 bucks.

Scott, I am flying a 30% Carden Cap. I have a 3W-75us single on mine and it is way more than enough. It is not even broke in and it yanks that cap around with authority.
The best part is the motor costs about the same as the high end 50cc motors. I think it sells for about $550 at aircraft international.

You could build the Cap and stay in a 50 size budget. Only 6 servos are required.

I fly a 30% Carden Cap too, pic in my aviatar, 21lbs

Flew the first season with a ZDZ 80, didn't like it- had way too much power to be any fun to fly( I like overpowered planes) but, I had a problem landing on our short field with the big 26" blade because even at idle the aircraft would fly. The hover power was about 3 clicks off of idle-even with a big throttle curve mixed in.

This year I swapped it out for a ZDZ 60 because it was a "plug in" fit. Now I really like the plane, it still has easily unlimited vertical but, now u can work the throttle.

and because i'm turning a much smaller prop, MSC 23x10 , it doesn't have so much pull at idle that the plane is a cow to bring down.

I should mention that both ZDZ'S were on KS canisters and are really putting out a tremendous amount of power.

I don't think a 50cc would fly it the way u like unless u can drop 4lbs on it somehow.
