About a year and a half ago, I started a Fiberclassics link about this plane, the setups, techniques, control throw, mixes and the trials and errors of setting up the plane for competition.

Well, I can't find that link, but someone asked me about how to set up cannisters for the Compostite ARF 3 meter Extra, so attached below is a diagram that I used as a template on my two Extras. They worked pretty well.

And today, I just took out the four 8411 JR servos I had in tandem for the rudder control and replaced them with TWO 8611 servos for testing purposes. I took off and the first thing I did was a full throttle knife edge loop. I could not tell the difference between the four 8411s and the two 8611s on this maneuver.

Still more testing, but I plan to continue flying with just two 8611 rudder servos on the 40% Extra.

This means that instead of 14 servos driving all the control surfaces on my 3 meter Extra 330, could get by with perhaps 8- one on each elevator, two on each aileron, two on the rudder- and loose about a half pound in the process after taking out the extra wiring.

Interesting...

Don

Don - I dont have a lot of room for a big plane...how does the 30% Composite ARF Fly? I am starting IMAC and I know the 40% is awsome.

Don, do you think a single 8611 will work on each aileron on the 2.6M Extra? I am thinking of replacing my 2 8411s in each aileron with a single 8611 so reduce outboard weight and eliminate mixing devises. The aileron seems pretty stiff so I'm not worried about it flexing.

Don,
Is the physical size and weight of the 8611 larger than the 8411? I haven't been able to find any specs on the 8611 yet, other than it is going to have 260 oz. of torque. Also do you know what the transit speed is?
Thanks, Travis

In the latest issue of MAN they had a full page ad of the new JR 8611 servo.

They have new alloy gears.

Stats:

220 ounces of torque at 4.8V transit speed of .18 I want to say

260 ounces of torque at 6.0V and a transit sped of .16

Flyfalcons, what was the answer regarding a single 8611 on the ailerons?

A single 8611 should be fine on the 2.6m Extra. The biggest concern here is not the available power, but driving the surface from a single point. If the surface is not torsionally stiff, you could risk flutter. If the surface is stiff enough however, the servo will have NO problems moving it.

As for the dimensions.. the 8611 is 2mm longer overall due to the thicker, stiffer case.

I totally agree with Doug that the main problem is in the flexibility of the aileron. With the Composite ARF, the aileron is quite stiff and I would fee comfortable driving it from a single point. I would remove the outboard servo and just bolt the hatch back on and use the 8611 in the inboard hatch. I would be sure to reinforce the plywood mount on the inboard hatch to handle the very high stress, and make absolutely sure that there is no slop in the linkage.
