I would like input reguarding prop selection for the YS 140 DZ in a 2 meter pattern plane. Also, your rational for using one particular APC prop over another.
Thank you

Important on any YS is to run the motor in the proper RPM range....any prop that the DZ runs in the 8100-8600 range is great.

Some props that work well on 30% heli (low Vis fuels) I use Cool Power.....and an OS #F or YS plug If you choose to run a 20% heli fuel instead of 30% take the props that have the higher rpm ranges like the 8600+'s and run them....the difference in nitro will drop you 300-400 rpm

APC's
16.5-12W about 8500-8600
16.5-12 ----- 8700-8900
16-12 ----- 8700-8900
16-13 ------8300-8400
16-14 ------8000-8200
16-13N ---- 8400-8600
17-12 ------8000-8200
17-12N----8200-8400
17-10 full blade --- 8600-8800
17-10N a little light 8800-9000
15.5-12.5W ----8800-9000

Any of these props approaching 8500 on the DZ are getting darn close to the noise limit for FAI in fact my opinion is they are on the 94db(A) on pavement @3meters or busting it. For AMA rules its 96db(A) at 3Meters adn the sound meter is turned at 70 degs to the model...they pass the AMA limit.

My favorite choices are the 16.5-12W its not too much load works well calm or windy, and if you tame it a little it meets the FAI noise limits. next inline are the 17-12 and 17-12N these get a little louder but work well. better on lighter models 10lbs or less. The reason is they help manage the energy better....the light weight model will jump with the DZ in the nose and the 16.5-12's but the 17-12 turns this into a smoother throttling...not as much vertical pull but better gearing and grunt in some things...help manage speed better.

The numbers above are all without the restrictor insert....For the Nationals or Team Selections I ran the insert and made good noise tests...Insert is worth about 200-300rpm lower but makes the throttle much more linear throughout the range. It will kill top end power slightly but top end power is not my concern.

Next choice's Bolly props...they have great performance but lack when it comes to price, availability, and noise. These props are in the $40-60 range and work very very well.

16.5-10 3Blade -8200 rpm really neat combo energy management was great, in fact awesome. Braking was superb the biggest issue is noise it has to be turning less than 7400 to make the noise limits and it just doesn't have any pull at this low an rpm.

17.5-12 another great pulling and energy management prop. turns up in the 8300 range....Again noise was huge the extra diameter will not make noise limits if you are turning a 17" prop above 8000 you are pretty much over the 94db(A) limit....and this is a little larger diameter yet...this combined with the tip shapes on the Bolly they are loud and going way too fast tip speed to stay quiet...anything over 400mph tip speed is pushing the noise meter and that so happens to be a 17" prop at 8000-8100.

Good luck the motors are great...I have 3 of them and have been running them for now going on the 4th yr....I started in early 2001 with the prototypes and he motors are very solid performers. They just make loads of power.
