Hello,

Anybody out there ever build/fly one? Looks like a nice 'future project' to build
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was the first radio controlled model airplane.

Just feeling a little nostalgic after taking a break from working on my Quaker Flash......Time to get back out to the shop!

Good question as to it being the first radio control A/C. I seem to remember reading a reprint from some magazine that in the very late 1920's out in the wilds of New Jersey, someone made up a radio control A/C. They used a homemade design ignition engine and I think they were mumm on the radio equipment, as I think it was illegal at the time.

I recieved a pm stating that there was an earlier R/C plane called a 'Guff'. Hmmmmm........
Don't know if this is who you were talking about.

I do not remember any "name" associated with the earlier A/C, just that it was rather crude and huge looking.

I was told by Bob Holman, he has laser cut parts available for the Lanzo RC-1. He is puting together parameters on a about 1/2 sized Lanzo Bomber now too. If you remember, he had two styles of wings available for the original 96 inch span Bomber.

Hey, thanks for the info on the RC-1! The wing designs for the Bomber were dihedral and polyhedral types weren't they? Or were the airfoils different? Hmmmm......

I believe that there were ealier RC models. I recall seeing a write up on Joe Rapante and his experiments with radio control. I seem to remember that he had some successful flights prior to the Good brothers with their Guff. All this took place back in the mid to late 30's. Certainly at the 39 Nats there were 5 or 6 teams in the radio control event and a number of them demonstrated controlled flight. I think that was where the Good bros won the event with their superior control and flying.

As for the RC1 you could do a lot worse. A fellow at our local SAM 8 club had/has one and it's a very nice flyer. He used it in the RC assist Texaco event.

But then what decent old timer doesn't make a good radio model....

RC1's are built in sizes ranging from little to big.  I have seen them for engines as small as a Cox 049 and big engough for an Enya 60 two stroke, easy to build and fly and a good competition model.
Chet Lanzo built the Bomber and the Record Breaker before the RC1, and I believe there were a number of other models built around the same time.  Go to the SAM international site in the US and all should be revealed.

RC1 is from 33/34. The Racer 1936 and the Record Breaker and Bomber are both from 1938

The "Guff" is/was a very successful RC model by Dr. Walt Good from 1938 or so. There should be quite a bit of history available on it. Try a Google search for "Walt Good Guff".

Just for interest, here's a New Zealand designed RC-1. Designed in 1939 by Reg Truman, the model I have features the original wing he built which I refurbished. Video of the 2.8metre wing span model can be seen on youtube - type in a search for RC-1. It is a lovely flying model which floats along very gracefully. Allen

Any .60 size 4 stroke will do.Your basically using the engine as your tow.Once at desired altitude,kick back and relax.I have a Lanzo Record Breaker with an old O.S. open rocker (.60 size) with a 4 oz.tank,It's not uncommon I can put up an hour flight.They will thermal,I almost lost mine,I had to fight to get it down.Anyone can fly it,I take it to outdoor family functions and have the kids fly it, it's always a hit.jeffo

.35 to 50 4 stroke,It doesn't take a lot of power to keep these birds up.You can use 2 strokes,but in my opinion it doesn't sound right.My 96" record breaker doesn't even weigh 5 lbs.It just puts along.jeffo

Thanks for the info Jeff. Ordered all the strip wood for my build today from Balsa U.S.---should be starting the build soon. I bought a nice Saito 56 for it.
