I just noticed that Tower Hobbies is carrying the Phoenix line of models. The 40 size Sukhoi is available for 99 bucks. Has anybody built one of these yet? If so what is the quality and flight performance like?

Do a search, or go back a page or 2. There are 2-3 strings covering this plane. Mine is allmost ready, just a few details...
Its a good deal, not a 3D, Pinned hinges. It has standard ARF so-so hardware I bought longer engine mount screws 4 mm, installed a pull pull rudder & a push pull elevator. These things are not absolutly necessary. It's got good covering, a bit heavy, nice fiberglass cowl & pants, lands fairly fast ( I hear).
.46 2 stroke as a mininum most go for a 50- 61. or .61-70 four stroke.
Mine- YS.63 FS, onboard glow driver ( yeah more weight ) flaperons. I havn't weighed it, it should be 6.1- 6.5 lbs.
Overall for the price its a good deal, they had them for @ 76$ last month. I bought 2 SUK's & 1 Giles. It should be a good flier. The build is nice and square.

What type of covering film did they use, was it that low temperature stuff or good quality? At this price point you really can't expect miracles, I was just wondering how it compared to the Kyosho Sukhoi 31 which is $219 from Tower, more than twice as much. Is this a case of you get what you pay for or is Kyosho overpriced? I have learned to be a bit leery since I bought a VMAR CAP 232 a few years ago and lived to regret it, definitely a piece of junk. I am tempted to buy the Su31 but have no experience with Phoenix models or their quality.

Don't let the cheap price fool you. This is a really nice plane. I bought the Sukhoi and Giles from Tower back when the were around $80 each. They are worth twice that.

I think the covering is Monocote, though I'm not 100% sure. I only have experience with Ultracote.

The only negative comment I can make about these planes is that they seem to weigh 1/2lb-1lb more than I would like. The hardware is not the best but it can be used. I replaced the horns and clevises with better quality parts, but only because I had some. I also replaced the wood dowel pushrods with Dave Brown fiberglass pushrods. One of the supplied dowels was bowed and when I went to buy a new wood dowel at the hobby shop they were all bowed also. I really like the Dave Brown pushrods...I'll be using them again.

I'm almost done with mine. All I have left to do is mount the engine. I'm going to be running a Saito 72 4-stroke. I've been stuck at this point of construction for the last month. My wife and I had our first baby 2 months ago and moved into a new house this week. I've been pretty busy! I will say it only took about 6 hours spread over several days to get where I am. It's a quick, easy build.

All in all, I have no qualms about recommending this plane. I can't wait to fly mine!

search for the threads as motormouth mentioned, there is A LOT of info about sukhoi and giles. I bought one from Tower the first week it was in stock......paid $130 for it and I thought that was a steal once I saw the quality. Also, it was probably the most enjoyable ARF assembly I've had....everything went together nicely. I've flown mine about 18 times now and I love it....like it's been mentioned, it's not a 3D plane, but scale aerobatics are very nice.

The covering is Ultracoat not Monokote. Great plane, it is as others have said a bit heavier than the Kyosho plane. A buddy has a Kyosho Cap which seems about a pound lighter but the kit is twice the price. I've been flying mine for 3 weeks or so now and it flies well.

I Bought one from Tower on the last day on their daily sale, it was $77 and with a $5 coupon lt just goes to show how much money they make on these arfs when they sell for full price.
Have not started it yet but looks very solid and straight, I dont mind the extra weight, just means it penetrates the gusty days better.
My only regret is that I did not buy 2 of them.
I have a worn out Easy Sport that my son has been flying, I will install all the servos and TT46 Pro in the Sukoi.

This is a great ARF and it is worth more money than what it is going for. Craftsmanship seems very good and flight performance is great. It is a little heavy for it's size, but not overly so. In that regard it is pretty sturdy and well built. Will survive some rough landings where others wouldn't fair so well. Covering is Ultracote/oracover so matches can easily be found and the finish should stay nice for a long time. Covering job was performed very very good on my models.

All in all, still an awesome deal for the current $99 asking prices.

Flew my Suk again this weekend and the more I fly it the better I like it. Mine is equipped with a 50 OS SX and Hitec 425 servos with 600 mah nicad APC 11x5 prop....This plane flies so smooth, and will knife edge and flat spin with ease and looks good doing so. It is a blast to fly and you really have to fly it in to land but that's what helps to make it a great little plane and while I was dissapointed with the weight (6 1/2 lbs) it hasn't affected the plane adversely at all. I took the baffle out of the engine and i'm getting not unlimited vertical but close to it...my only regret is that I didn't buy 2 of them when Tower had them at $77.
