Im in the retract instalation part of the wing build and have them mounted BUT. On yours how did you do the gear door part?. If i mount mine with the retract flush with gear rails the wheel is about halfway out of the wing and the gear door will not be even close to flush with the wing. If i shim the retract so the wheel and gear door are level with the wing will that make the gear sit wrong when the gear is down. The instructions say very little about this. I have looked for pics but noone shows the underside of there plane. Could someone post a few pics and explane how theres is mounted?

Thanks
James

PS. these are Robart 605 90degree with robostruts.

James,

Are you using offset struts? If not that might be the problem. On my TF P51B, the wheels go into the wheel well and are just even with the bottom of the wing. On my TF P51D, I used longer offset struts which put the wheels closer to the scale location and the wheels are farther down in the well because the wing is thicker in that area.

Yes im using offset struts. I have readjusted the retracts and the wheel sits level with the bottom of the wing now but the gear door that hooks to the strut will not sit level with the wing like this. I would like to know what others have done to cure this problim. Maybe im the only one with the problim tho.

you just have to sink the whole assembly deeper into the wing, if you want
to make the landing gear disappear and the gear door and wing surface to be
flush.

I've got the same kit. Which retracts did you go with? How bad did you get stung for them?

Here is the setup I used on Century Jet retracts for the TF P-51. I don't know if it would would for any other types of retracts or not. It does allow adjustment of the distance the door sits away from the strut.

Just my 2 cents here but the shape of the P-51 Mustangs laminar flow wing (as viewed from the nose of the 51,) reviles that the front (leading edge to the wing at the root/belly of the Mustang, is angled downward and thus the geometry enables the gear and door to retract flush with the wing. Ages ago I purchased the "old" 'Red Box' Mustang and got to the retracts and tried varying geometry and just could not set up the gear doors, much less the struts to retract flush with the wing..THEN I read Dave Platt's latest construction article on his newly completed Mustang "Hurry Home Honey" and there MR Scale described the downward angle in which the 51's leading edge changes at the first 1/3 (approx.) of the leading edge and thus enables the gear to retract with door flush with the wings outer skin.

I still have that Mustang with all the of Mods. I did (after seeing Mr. Platt's model) and now finishing painting it like Charles F Blairs red Jewl of a P-51-C named "Excalibur" which is now hanging from the second (I think) level of our great nations new Dullus Smithsonian.

Well you guys if you will look at a P-51s door you will see that they are hinged on the wing skin and not the strut. Just like the P-47 there is a pivot block for the gear doors on the strut. This lets the door kind of slid up and down the strut an makeing it easier to get the gear door for the strut flush to the wing. And the wheel gear door cover is hinged at the center of the wing. And you will need a servo to operate the gear doors. Depends on how scale you want your plane to look.

Very informative, seems examining the mechanical operation of the full scale's mechanisms is the correct place to start with in the decision making process.with regard to a workable set up and then.. like you said depends on the accuracy you plan to replicate.
