I didnt want to start a war, I just think if i buy the .65 my four star is going to be under powered. Thats all im trying to ask, will it be underpowered and fly like a merlin? Im on a limited budget and this k&b .65 is only 50.00 and its NIB. I just dont want to be disappointed.

It really depends on how you want to fly. The 4*60 is a wonderful floater if built to plans - it flies "on the wing" not "on the prop". It's NOT a 3D plane. I've personally flown 4*60s with:
OS 60FP (bushing 60)
OS 61FX
OS 91FX
OS 91 Surpass
TT .61 Pro
Saito 65, 80, 91 and 100
ST 90

If you want a capable airplane that will fly relaxing, realistic aerobatics, the 65 sportster will do fine. If you want to chop two or three bays off each wing panel and alternate between 3D and pylon racing, it's the wrong motor AND airframe. Swing a big prop and use some castor, and you'll have a great flying airplane.

Ok thanks im gonna buy the k&b. I dont want to sound like an idiot but when you say use some castor, I put the castor in the fuel jug? and where do i get castor? Also can the engine be broken-in in the air ( someone did this once at my field) and what prop should i use? Sorry for the stupid questions.

BTW The k&b comes with a back plate engine mount, should i use this or the plastic one that came with the 4*?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Use whichever mount fits best, but if yours is the late Sportster with the remote needle the radial mount that came with the engine will probably be easier, having the mount for the needle.

Castor oil can be added to the fuel, but if you use Omega from Morgan's it already has castor in it. Still wouldn't hurt to add 3 ounces per gallon, and you can get Sig branded castor oil from Tower. Or your local motorbike shop. If the latter, be sure you get the version that will mix with alcohol fuels.

And a 12x6 is a good prop to start on that engine, you may want to try a different one later.

Breakin on the plane can be done, although if posible it would be better to do the initial running on a stand. Saves wear and possible damage to the plane.

Bill.

Don't worry about the oil . Just use 10% nitro from the hobby store. Once you start adding oil to the fuel your only asking for problems as a beginner. Use everything off the shelf for your 4* (fuel, radio, glue...). When you have a few airplanes and engines under your belt go ahead and experiment with adding things .

Hello Dennis and everyone on this subject... I am new to flying and have an older K&B 65 that runs good but I have not yet got the high end to transition down smoothly after take off... Working on it now...changing plugs, etc... I am using 10% blend morgan with 5 oz of castor to the gallon.. My questions are... When did they stop making the .65 sportster and what price range when they were sold new at LHS... I see a few new ones on ebay, etc and am considering purchasing one for the torque it delivers for use in a .60 Stinger, etc... Is $50.00 the max to pay now for a new in the box... ? Thanks.. Richard

Richard:

The K&B Sportster 65 is still on the market, new price is $90, so NIB for $50 isn't a bad deal. But the K&B "Twister" 61 is a lot more engine, and it's priced at $80 from K&B brand new. I think it's worth the extra $30 over your eBay price.

Order the new K&B engines at (800) 359-6972. That's Angie, Jim, and Randy at MECoA/K&B/RJL.

Bill.

As was stated before, I'd recommend simply buying a gallon of 5-10% nitro fuel that already has a castor or castor/synthetic blend oil.

I have always loved my Sportsters, from the .20, .25 (.20 overbore conversion), and .28, to the .45, and .65. They are neither intended nor generally used as racing motors. Great idle (when maintained and set correctly) and reliable. Quiet with a baffle; fine, torque generating performers without. I have also run several "modern" ABC/ABN OS-type motors, both ball bearing and not, and like them too, but I still have a warm spot in the heart for the K&B Sportsters. There have been a few occasions when someone at the field has made a comment like, "is that K&B the best you can do?".....one flip and she's running and off into the air.....after another thoroughly enjoyable flight and return to the pits, I'll find "Mr. Best You Can Do" still cranking away with an electric starter on his modern RC engine....and, the modern RC engine wasn't the problem....

Take heed of the nitro warnings already made in this thread. I have, more than once, headed off to the field after a long absence from flying with a jug of 15% nitro fuel and a sportster powered aircraft......and not until she begins to protest several minutes into the flight do I realize my mistake and bring the aircraft back to the runway and find some lower nitro fuel. Mine have all run just fine on 10%, but 15% seems to be the beginning of the trouble zone.

Have a great Sportster Day!

I am having a little trouble with the needle valve assembly on my Sportster. Of the four parts, threaded-brass tube, nut, needle, and ?clicker?, I am not sure where the clicker should go. If I place it in between the nut and the carb, there is not enough room to tighten the nut. What should I do? Do I need the clicker? Sorry if the post is confusing. Ask if you need more explanation. Thanks.

BCP:

Here's a couple pictures of that type carb. The actual position of the spring isn't important so long as it's clear of the disc adjust screw. And it is indeed trapped under the nut.
