On the .65's, can't you bolt the cylinder on so the exhaust is on the left?? I know there are only four bolts holding the head and cylinder on, so will it bolt on that way??? If so, how would that effect the ports???

Just a thought.

Dru:

The exhaust stack is not part of the removable section. And the cylinder can be installed in four different positions, you're right on that, but three are wrong and wont run properly. Because of that same port mismatch.

I have two of the .65's but they are in planes at my brothers so I could not go out and look at them to see. The exhaust stack is a seperate piece that the muffler bolts go through from the case side and then thread into the muffler body. I was just wondering if the ones that have the exhaust on the left had the cylinder put on so the exhaust port was pointing that way.

Sorry folks, I was wrong - memory failure.

The Sportster 65 can be assembled with the exhaust on either side.

Hello William.... Then the design will allow for the exhaust to be installed on either side? What is necessary to move the stack around..? Is it bolted on or screwed in? Thanks for this info... Richard

You can loosen the 4 head bolts and lift, turn the head and then tighten the 4 bolts again. Not sure if the porting of the cylinder/upper case will work as well?

Dru and Richard:

My memory was so bad I didn't even remember the exhaust stack was part of the cylinder, so I'm not going to say how it will run when reversed. You'll just have to look inside the case with the cylinder off, and see if there is the same relief on both sides to allow the bypass flow. If it has the clearance, it should run as well either way.

Bill.

I just pulled the cylinder off of one. Looks to me as though it should run either way.

William, our memories are like to play tricks on us. If mine works about 15% to 20% of the time I think I am lucky. The reason your memory did not work is because you have learned so much that it had to make room.

I think I saw way back when in a model mag a guy had put the cylinder on so it was a rear exhaust and used a header for a tuned pipe to make the muffler fit in the nose of a P-38, the exhaust exited the fuse right behind the molded super chager. He was running the .65 because it would turn the big 3 bladed prop.

What is everyones opinion on this engine and what would be a good price for it?

My opinion on this engine is; Stay away from this engine. It's useless when compared to anything on the market today. Value= price of scrap metal.

You go ahead and do it your way. There are too many people using this engine with great satisfaction for it to be anywhere near as you describe it.

If you had a bad experience with one it can only be because you tried to make it work outside its design parameters.

If you tried to make a small plane go fast I have no doubt you weren't happy with it, but if you had it hauling a big plane at moderate speed you could not have been displeased.

Bill.

We were asked for an opinion and thats what you got. No more no less. If you don't want peoples opinions then don't ask. If you don't agree then so be it.

Ron:

You are quite correct, sir.

Apologies.

Bill.

PS: I still think they're good engines. wr.

Mr. MYWAY ... do it your way but try to work within the system... If you do not like an engine, etc. then give your experience so others can understand your negative statements... I do not like your opinion.... I do not like your engines, I do not like the way you fly .. I do not like anything you say or do MYWAY but if I do not offer experiences and data then my opinion is worthless and exactly what you paid for my opinion of you and your airplanes, etc... Richard

Hello William and Jessie... I love the .65 Sportster... I have two and one is on a .40 trainer (heavy with repairs) That airplane has been more fun to fly since I put the Sportster 65 on it... Engine idles great and forever... has never quit in the air (run slight rich) and gives me power when I need it... cruise under half throttle.... The carburator came loose last week when I loss the retaining pin.. That engine would not stop running... even with carburator floating up and down 1/2 inch in the engine... only the fuel line and the throttle linkage kept the carburator attached to the engine... could not shut down due to change in linkage and flew until empty.. The carburator is now wired to the engine and still runs great... Now I have a question for you guys... My other 65 Sportster is the one that has the exhaust on the right side facing the engine... How do I go about removing the stack and turning 180 degrees? Thanks for all of your great comments and keep them flying... Richard
