Horizon did OK by me in the end and I have no complaints. Flew the plane last weekend and the engine and plane both worked great. I continue to order from them with no further hassles.

I had to go through three of there 58 MDS engines before I got one that the case didn't crack during break in but Horizion made good on replacement in nothing flat, turnaround was very fast. I also got my back ordered MDS 68 from them about the time they stated they thought they would be in stock. Tax, they ship out of Calif. so your stuck with state tax. After A season with the MDS engines it has proven clear you get what you pay for, never again, I will stick with O.S. and pay A little more for my small glow engines and be problem free. MDS leaves something to be desired in Quality and I have never been able to trust one in A good plane. Buyer beware!!!!

Mike

I'm sorry to read about your problems. This problem should be sorted out by your supplier and it seems strange that they have taken such an attitude. However regarding the MDS .68. There should be a warranty form with the engine that gives a three year warranty. If you still have the receipt send this with the engine back to Ripmax in the UK with a letter of you grievences. I'm sure that they will respond without delay and refund your postage costs etc in full.
I have used MDS engines for several years and found the Ripmax service on engine exchange etc to be very good.

Hope that this helps.

As I stated, Horizon did okay by me in the end and I have no complaints. I did suggest to them that if they send a customer a defective product and cannot replace it with the same product in exchange, the customer should get a refund.

I like MDS engines, they make good power. I find that getting replacement parts for the popular "8" series is getting harder. Horizon is out of many parts and has been for some time. Especially crankshafts.

I stumbled across this thread after I got my Ultra Stik 60 while looking for info regarding the plane. After reading it I did a thorough inspection of my plane. Thankful for the clear covering. I found a cracked rib in the horizontal stab. Emailed Horizon describing the problem, return email said "I'm sending you a new tail set, no charge." (not just the stab, but the whole tail set!) It arrived at my house 4 days later UPS. They didn't ask for pictures or any further info, just sent it! I will definately buy from Horizon/H-9 again if this is how they handle customer problems. Looking forward to getting this plane in the air. Any set up tips? Airframe reinforcement? Engine recommendations? I was thinking Tower .75. Any thoughts?
Is "Crow" worth the effort, with the flaps? Thanks.

Quad Flaps--they make the plane. I wouldn't leave them off, even if you can't use them right away.

I hear that the Hangar 9 fuel tanks are weak, so I replaced mine with a Sullivan. I also fuelproofed the interior with Varathane Dymonwood polyurethane after reinforcing the firewall and main gear block with epoxy.

I have put 4" black and white checkerboard on the bottom to help with orientation in the air. Without something like this, the top and bottom of the plane look a lot alike. Also, I had to add weight to the tail to balance it. Proper CG is very important and the plane flies a lot better if it is not noseheavy. Mine tracks straight down the runway and takes off all by itself.

Good luck with your plane and regards to all.

My 2 centes for what its worth:

My experience with Horizon Hobby has been limited but amiable.

1) I too, ended up with an Ultra Stick 60 with broken ribs -- like many of the original owners. I too felt the damage was minimal and chose to ignore it initially. After about 6 months I did contact Horizon and requested they send me a sample of the clear-yellow covering so I could repair the broken rib. They sent me an entire role without question.

2) My first and only MDS-68 leaked like a sieve around the front bearing. I sent the engine to their service people and they replaced both the front and rear bearings. Again I was well satisfied with their service. I didn't treat a minor problem like paying for the shipping to send the engine to them like world-war III.

3) In general my experience with RC service centers have all been positive. Hobby Services from Tower/Great Plains, took my fried OS FX 1.60 and replaced the piston ring and sleeve under warrantee. It was damaged from a lean run. My explanation to them was that the damage occur with just one run of the engine lean. They excepted my explanation and repaired my engine free-of-charge -- I also didn't sweat the fact that I had to pay the shipping to send it to them.

4) My Magnum engine experience resulted in 2 engines that needed repair. One I did not send in, sold it to someone else that did send it in (1.20 XL 2-stroke), the other was a .15XL 2-stroke. After almost 3 years of infrequent usage, the .15XL's crankcase adjacent to the mounting tang fractured. I sent the engine in and they shipped me a new one, no questions asked. The friend I sold the 1.20 to sent it in and they replaced virtually every component inside the case, no questions asked -- a very definitely used engine.

Not once did I bad-mouth any of these service departments and received in response the service I expected as a minimum and service above and beyond in many cases.

Ok i help out at a local hobby store and i see your frustration and i see the pics of the product. Horizon is a very good company and very willing to make the customers happy. I totally believe the pics because i have not actually seen a crack like that from a box but i have accidently dropped a tool in the right spot on top of a installed carb and it busted the lower half of the case almost identicle to your pic.
Here is something else you might not be thinking about, even horizon has to go thru others sometimes to get the right model out at the right time which could rush alot of things and people just dont seem to care about others property and are very unsafe in handling certain things if on a deadline. It could be horizon and it could have been someone else (nobody knows) but i would say your main problem was maybe you talked the wrong way or maybe to the wrong person i dont know but i love horizon and they make me happy so im not gonna knock them although i see your pain in the situation and i understand. The wing thing before i seen the pics was what i thought typical because of the balsa but now that i see the pic im not sure what to tell you about the wing unless somebody was drunk...............hahah when building. but i have a theory that anything can happen at least once and maybe this is one of those times?
Hope you get it worked out.....................later!

when i dropped the tool on top of the carb the crack was caused because the carb was tightened too tight to the housing, meaning if the carb was already installed on the engine when you got it then it could have been over tightened and if it wasnt then something could have been dropped on it but it looks like a crack from over tightning the carb. The wing thing after i look again seems to me that it was just built that way or you should have had some pieces of balsa inside the covering.

Again hope you get it worked out and i must tell you not to expect too much from your mds unless you install a thunder tiger carb on it or possibly a kenya but you will have a time making that work. later!

Horizon fixed everything in the end, more or less. I'm so happy with the way the plane flies (whee) that I don't think about it anymore except when someone brings up this thread.

MDS engines actually run pretty good with the C2 carb. Even the C1 carb can be adjusted to run well. The problem with MDS, as I see it, is that certain parts, like a .48 crankshaft or a .68 crankcase, are unobtainable if you need to repair your engine.

Regards to all.
