Soon, Tom...very soon!
I thought I'd have this thing in primer already but it's taking longer than I thought. Come to think of it EVERY plane I've built has taken longer than I thought!...that have a familiar ring to it?

Hmmm... about that taking longer than expected... what could you possibly mean? Boy that never happens to me.

I cut away the bottoms of the nacelles. The removed parts will be used as forms for making fiberglass doors.

Jim,

Looking great! What did you use to cut out the gear doors with? I'm guessing a dremel with a cutting wheel? Getting ready to cut out the nose gear door on a P-38 soon, any tips on do's and don'ts?

Thanks,
Chris.

Chris,

I used a #11 x-acto to make a score line in the glass layer, then cut with an x-acto handle with a keyhole saw blade in it. I have a better description at the rcscalebuilder.com site under Don Smith plans.

I'm making the gear doors by using the cutout shells as forms. that way I can make more if I have to. I first covered the forms with monokote and then waxed them with a couple of coats of car wax. Here are the epoxy/glass layups on the forms and then after being removed. I used a butter knife and an old hacksaw blade to work them loose. They were still a little too flexible so I'm putting another layer of epoxyglass on.

Hatches are being made in the upper nacelles for access to the fuel tanks and throttle servos. After cutting them out I made formers for the ends of them by tracing the inside curves. The front, rear, and edge faces will be surfaced with 1/64 ply for more durability.

Looking great Jim, that's a cool idea you have. Will you be putting in "false" frame work on the inside of the gear doors as well? That will definately give them strength. Can't wait to see your finished product!

Chris.

Thanks, Chris. Yeah, I'm going to do something to stiffen the gear doors. The full-size one has a thickness to them with an inner shell. I'm going to do something like that...maybe a few former and balsa skin on the insides.

I test ran the engines the other day. They are 33cc Homelite chainsaw conversions, and are smooth powerful little engines. Running them both at the same time I was pleasantly surprised at how little vibration there was.

Update on Bf110. Got it all primed and applied panels edges. The wether has improved and I finally got to put some paint on it.

Here's the second color on the top and sides. One more color (RLM70) go on top in a "splinter" pattern, then it will be ready for markings.
