Excellent Jim!!

Congrats on the maiden... How did the twin 33's sound in the air? Awesome I'll bet... Man, I wish I was there to see it fly!

Very cool!

Hi Ron, haven't heard from you in a while. The Homelite 33s are running great and sound awesome! The only problem I have is the engines go rich in the air and start 4-cycling. I tried putting tubes on the hole over the carb diaphragm and running it into a dead space but that didn't help. I think the air blowing over the carbs that are sticking out causes low pressure and keep them from getting enough air. I'm going to try velocity stacks next.

I flew the plane several more times yesterday and I'm getting more comfortable with it and getting the bugs worked out. I even did a few rolls and loops.

Jim

Hello Jim,

Here in Montana we have two seasons: winter and construction... I drive truck for a sand and gravel company and have been plenty busy since spring making money for my winter projects. I also bought an early 40's IH T6 crawler which I plan on using this next winter to keep my flying field and 1/2 mile dirt road clear of snow. (So that I can fly -and- get to the hobby store). Anyway, reading your posts about the ME 110 has got me fired-up to go flying again!

I made a temporary velocity stack from an aluminum cap that I pirated off the wife's perfume bottle. (Dolce Aura brand). It's crude and was intended to be temporary, but it worked so well on my 33cc homelite that I just left it on. I'll bet a set of velocity stacks will clear your problem right up.

The loops and rolls is fantastic, all you need now is a Hawker Hurricane in the same scale .....

Thank's for sharing,

Ron

Ron,

I flew the plane again yesterday. The velocity stacks didn't make a whole lot of difference but the twin 33s still ran great. We got some better pictures this time, though.

What a beautiful plane Jim. You should be as proud of her as I am envious!

Chris.

Thanks, Chris. I hope you get that P-38 going soon.

Great pic's Jim!

I figured the stacks would solve your engine woes... Maybe your 33's need more prop? Just a thought..

Beautiful plane Jim,

Ron

Thanks, Ron.
Somebody at the field mentioned more prop, too. I would have thought 18-8s were big enough for these engines but maybe not.

Interestingly, I flew my Corsair yesterday that has a G45 in it. It also goes rich when it's in the air. Now that I think about it, most of my gassers go a little rich in the air.

Jim,

I was using an APC 18x10 on my 33cc Homelite powered Stinson and Hawk and it seemed just right for my application. No 4-stroking that I can remember..... I also have an APC 20x8 prop on hand that I want try soon, just for comparison.

Here's a question for you gas engine experts:

I had the same problem with my 31cc Ryobi conversion. During flight in a dive it would "4-stroke" Is the engine running lean or rich when this happens? I'm thinking lean... A larger prop seemed to remedy this problem but changes everything else, carb settings, down line braking etc., etc.

Thanks,

Ron
