I started work on my 118" Messerschmitt 110 from the Don Smith plans. I started with the fuse. Construction is unusual in that the left half is built over the plan and then you turn it over and build the right side (sort of reminds me of the old Guillows kits I built as a kid). The building surface has to be absolutely flat or a bow or twist could be built in. The fuse is a really long and skinny thing.

The 118" plans are blowups of the smaller one so I had to adjust the slot sizes in the formers for the next bigger size of stringers. Other than that the formers lined up pretty well. I left some planking off of the sides so I could run pushrods when the stab and fins are in place.

The fuse is so long that it wouldn't fit on my building table which is made from a door, so I decided to make the nose section as a separate piece.

Here the nose has been added to the fuse and it has been block sanded some to smooth out the planking. The fuse is mainly 1/4 " formers with 1/8" x 3/8" planking and plywood wing saddle pieces. So far the fuse is very light.

Tail surfaces are pretty much built. Now I have to hook up linkages inside the stab to work the rudders.

Looking good Jim!

Gee that construction technique looks very familiar. (I'm working on one of Don's Hellcat's.) I have the fuselage and tail feathers completed (gotta love that strip planking), but I have not yet started the wing. I am waiting for Darrell (Sierra Precision) to finish up a set of retracts for me.

I noticed in your photos that the plans for the 110 seem to be more detailed than the plans for the F6F. The F6F plans do not have any bellcranks or such on them. They just have the basic structure (formers, longerons, ribs, spars, etc.). I guess the amount of detail Don puts on a plan varies from one design to the next.

Hmmm... might be time to order the HS129 or P-61 plans to see how they compare.

Regards!

Paul

Thanks, guys. I'm really getting psyched about this plane. It seems like it's going to be pretty light. There isn't as much plywood in the construction as the Ziroli planes I've built.

Paul,
Believe me...there isn't much instruction on the plans compared to others designers, but it seems accurate as far as I can tell, and the parts fit pretty well.
Oh yeah, I just LOOOOve strip-planking too!

Tmoth4, Looking good! I have a DS Me-110 waiting on the shelf...I've never built from Don's plans and it's nice to see someone documenting the construction. From what I see on my plans, you're right there isn't a whole lot of extraneous stuff, looks like the necessities and he leaves a lot up to builder disgression, which isn't a bad thing at all. keep up the great work.
Happy flying,

TMOTH4,
Very nice, indeed! I bought Don's plans for the 89" version and have had them on my "to build" list for sometime. Yours is looking so good that I may give mine another look.

What are you going to use for engines? Dave Voglund ( I think that's his name ) put a pair of Laser 1.50's in his for scale competition. The one thing that has held me back from starting mine is finding suitable engines that won't stick out like a sore thumb.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to your pics as this beauty takes shape.

The cowls are really nice epoxy/glass ones from Don Smith. I'm using two 25cc Homelite conversions. They will fit almost completely within the cowl with a minimum of holes. Just the very top of the cylinder head will show, which is OK with me. I have these in a 100" Cessna Bobcat twin at 30# and they fly it very well. I'm almost sure this plane will be less than 30#.

I just tried on the canopy (also from DS) for the first time and it's a perfect fit! Cool.

Wow, it's look'n sweet! I see one fly on occasion where I fly. He has twin US41's, and it's reasonably scale like, but still not blazingly fast. This was a fighter, though, and it should have power and speed, IMO.

Just one question, since I've seen this airplane fly with US41's, don't you think 25 cc's are a bit small for this airplane?

I know the reluctance to cut up the cowls, but perhaps you need to give the engine size a second guess.

JMO. Either way, good luck with her, and I'm looking forward to future pictures and info.

Thanks,

Howard

What size engines does Don recommend for his 89". I have thought of that one myself. I thinking that a pair of .90 RCV's would fit nicely in those cowls. They would also turn scale-size three blade props.

Looking good Jim. I almost bought this kit earlier this week. I will be watching with great interest.
