Today was the maiden flight on my TF DC-3/AC-47. Two flights, no problems. I am totally satisfied with the way
it flies. The OS. .40 LA engines provide just the right amount of power with 10 x 6 three blade props. The only
think I noticed was when I applied up elevator, it tended to want to jump up at a steep angle. After
the first flight when the trims were reset, the second take off went much better. All in all, great flying plane. I
didn't use flaps for either take off or landing. We had a perfectly calm day, and it slows down nicely for landing,
hardly faster than most trainers.

How close on the RPM scale were the 2 engines? What was the RPM with the 3 bladed props? I am glad to hear of the great flight report. Thanks Dave

The engines were tached at about 8900. Second flight one was at 9200 and I backed it down to match the slow one. I didn't lean them out as far as they would go, I wasn't sure how well they would cool in the cowlings. Besides, I didn't need the last ounce of power anyway.
I read something years ago that if you got a twin within about 500-1000rpm of each other on the high end, (assuming you're turning in the 10,000rpm range) it would be fine. I check at mid range and high throttle. So far, I haven't had any trouble getting within a couple hundred rpm.
I'm pretty sure 2 bladed props would produce more, but I like the looks and sound of the 3 blades. As long as it's working, I don't want to fix it, if you know what I mean.

Was this your first twin?

I really love the look of a C-47. Want to build one, but have never built a twin.

Great looking plane

Actually, this is my 3rd twin. Years ago I built a Royal (now Marituka) B-25 with two Saito .45 4cy. It was a great flying plane.
Second one is an B-26K Invader, 96" span built from M.C. Beleiu plans. Have two OS .65LA on it. I have two flights on it, and still working out some trim/thrust issues.
Right now, the DC-3 is the pick of the litter, although the B-26K is my sentimental favorite, because I worked in the full size ones in Thailand in the mid-60's.
Flying twins aren't much different from flying single engines-----as long as they both are running! Guess I'm just nuts about the sound.
Interestingly, Top Flites manual that comes with the DC-3 even says, "How many dead sticks do you have with a single engine? You'll have twice as many with a twin." They also say that it will fly on one engine if you have good airspeed when one goes out. Personally, I'm not eager to test that theory just yet!

Great looking plane, I can just see the solid stream of traces from the M61 Vulcans, and that sound. If you have never heard a Vulcan cannon, it will raise the hair on the back of your neck. My first experience was my third day in country, Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam 1971.

Hi Vince,
The AC-47 didn't have a Vulcan, just three 7.62 miniguns and 40 flares. We had a very sophisticated flare launch system; we tied a lanyard to a hook in the fuselage and the other end was attached to the fuse pin, we then threw the flare out the back door, which is the reason the door is missing. You're probably thinking of the AC-119K, which had one ot two Vulcans and four miniguns, at least that's what we had in the states as best
I can remember. I was a gunner on SPOOKY at Bien Hoa, 68-69 and an instructor gunner on 119's and 130's.
Regards,
Jon

PS, I'm building an AC-47 based on the Ziroli plans. Tail number "274", but that's another story!

Thanks for the nice comments on the plane, guys. I was very fortunate to actually see one of the first AC-47's do a night firing at one of the ranges at Eglin AFB on a cold, dark December night in 65. It definitely got your full attention. 4 and 1 tracers coming out at 6000rounds a minute lights up the place. Here's a little better shot of the guns.

rryman,
Looks neat with those guns hanging out the windows. I like the SE Asia camo scheme, too. Great job! Maybe you could rig up some kind of sound effects for the guns (a giant tongue of fire coming out would be cool, too, but you might set your club field on fire).

rryman, I am interested in your experience with the a-26. I have one about ready to fly and would welcome any comments you might have.

JLLayton, I just sent you a private message on the A-26. Probably a little more info than I should put on this thread.
