Mike, It gets cold here to. I am actually in Oklahoma. I grew up in Chicago. It stays colder longer their but gets just as cold here. I wish I could tell you more about the life span of this product. After four years ours is the same. Except for the color that is. The shine is gone from it and it's more dark gray than black. We put aside $500. a year for replacement. Our thought was by the time we needed to replace it we would have the money. We make about that much a year from our fly in. I dont think the cold really affect it much. It seems to be the same hot or cold. The only thing is you cant plow the snow from it. It will tear.I hit ours with the deck on the mower. I got it to low and put a tear in it. It's easy to fix but a plow would be a mess. The nice thing is the snow melts from it before it melts from the ground.Don't ask me why but it does.

David,

Any word on the name of the material that you put down? Do you know the product number? I have looked at some sites listed on this thread but there are many types of material, woven, non woven, petromatt, geotex,.... I would like to get all the info I can so I can present it to my club and we can make a decision. THanks

Several years ago, after being chased off one flying site after another like most clubs, our local club bought approximately 50 acres of land, and charged the membership a land assessment, payable over several years, on top of regular dues. There are now 2 grass runways, and a nice parking area and several buildings on it. As to the runways and surrounding areas, they were cultivated and rolled , then planted to grass. they seem to hold up well, and I think the runways are rolled most every spring. Fertilizer and weed spray keep it looking good, even though it's far from any water system. The best thing about the whole area is that its at least 15 miles from any housing development. Also, the club purchased a large commercial Toro mower, used, which pretty much solved the ongoing hassles of keeping it mowed, and the unused part of the property is rented back to a local farmer who hays it. This provides a small income for the fields maintenance.

Paved Runway!

My R/C Club in Toledo, Oh has a 80' X 400' paved asphalt runway.
When building a runway you must plan for proper water drainage.
Our runway is raised in the center 36.00" - 40.00" for water run-off.
The formula used by the Experts is 1.00" for every 10.00' so about
40.00" That is why we call it the "HUMPWAY" , I'm 5'10" tall and I
must stand on my toes to see the other end of the runway it's like
looking over a hill. Also if you use asphalt do not seal it for at least 2
years to allow it to vent/breath, this will maake your runway last
longer and keeps your hobby shop selling foam tires as it acts like
80 grit sandpaper when you take-off or land. Total cost for removing
old runway and putting down new $33,000.

Grand cost for always doing things wrong?

Priceless

I plan to build mine this spring. I will probably make it about 300 feet long and 15 feet wide. It will either be just dirt or fine crushed rock. If, big if, the stock market continues to treat me well, it will 600 feet by 25 feet crushed rock with a 400 foot over/under run so i can fly full scale (STOL) in and out.

Mike,(and others) I have the info you want. wish I owned a scanner. This really to much info to list here. I will put what I can.
The material is Woven Geotex made by Amoco. We contacted them directly.( I will list the numbers below) We then purchased the material from Maxwell Supply in Oklahoma City. The man at Amoco sent us a folder with all the specs and samples of each material. maxwell Supply was the closest dealer to us. We used the #2006 for the taxi way and #2019 for the runway. The UV rating on the 2019 is higher. Plus the product is woven tighter. I will put a pic of the folder below.

The names of the people we talked to;

Amoco Fabrics adn Fibers Company CEF Distibuter
Tom Shankles
texas Contractor Supply
Po Box 560169
Dallas ,TX 75356
1-800-442-7661
1-972-438-3323
FAX 972-428-2989

In Austin TX: Chuck Stooky
512-389-3344

I Will not let our folder go. I will however Xerox and mail a copy to you guys if you want it.

David

p.s. the pics will be in the next post

Pics of folder. I hope you can read this. I dont have a price list on this material. And if memory serves me the product had to be sold to a contractor in our club who then sold it to us at cost.

i work for a concrete company in st loius we are always looking for a place to get rid of leftover concrete contact your local plant maybe they would be willing to give any leftovers they have to you for free!you will just have to have a crew that could be ready at a moments notice to go to your site and finish it.we get rid of 1-5 yards of concrete every night that would go a long way on a runway that is 15 foot wide 1 yard will cover an area 10foot x 8foot x 4 inches thick so keep that in mind!

heres a good way to do it. take what ever you are going to use and mix some magnets into it
then you can sheet the bottom of your plane with a light piece of metal not the bottom of course just enough maybe seperate it font middle and back run you battery to it to make a electrostatic field and it will hover no more hard landings. as stupid but not that expensive it would work
