To WM GS Zero pilots, when you drop the flaps, does the nose of the plane pitch up, pitch down, or stay level? I like to know what to expect. Thanks in advance.

Richard,

I had to put about 4 click of forward programmed when at flap deflection of 60 degree. It ballons like crazy, the plane is very light. I have a G45 in mine and it hauls!

Thanks for the reply, Vic. Yes, the plane is very light for its size. The wing weighs nothing, even with heavy duty Robart air retracts and four servos. I guess I will go ahead and mix in around 15% of down elevator when the flaps are deployed.

Richard, I am using the robart 640 size gears they work great, its no longer looking like scared chicken trying to take flight.

Richard,
The nose pitches up when the flaps are let down. I have 3 flights on mine, with a Mokie 1.80 and stock retracts. The retracts are a little flemsy, but they work well. I did not want to pour anymore money into new retracts. Do be very careful in setting up your tank and what motor mount you use, you can cut both lines in the air like I did on the first flight for a dead stick landing. It was my mistake, because I did not bend the brass tubing for the vent line or the fuel pick up line. I did put foam in front of the tank, but that does not solve the problem. There was a lot of vibration and pressure pressing the tank forward from the throttle mount. I ended up moving my throttle mount back about three eighths inches back to relieve the pressure, instead of going to a smaller tank. The plane flys great and tracks well. I did not have to put but a couple clicks in the right aileron.

Getting ready to maiden my Zero. Just finishing up some minor details. I have to balance it out yet and set control throws. I am using a fpe 2.4 or 40cc motor. This should pull it ok right? I have also repainted the entire airplane and will post pictures soon. I think you will like the new color scheme. Are the reccomended throws fine to start with or do you reccomend something different?

Thanks Jerry. I'm using the stock tank with the neck sticking out through the firewall, so hopefully the brass tubes won't cut the fuel lines. The guy whom I bought the Zero from installed an OS 1.60FX, so he had to epoxy around 2 lbs of lead to the cowl, which is never a good place to mount nose weight. I will need to remove the lead shots.

Richard, I put probable 2 pounds on mine attached at the bottom of the firewall box and it is fine. I wish you much success.

She is a beaut. The second pic below shows all the lead shots epoxied around the front part of the cowl. The third picture shows how much the whole cowl weighs (3.16 lbs). The four screws holding the cowl on won't be able to support all that weight under vibration, so I'm going to try to remove the lead shots with an electric hot knife and mount lead around the engine box.

Richard, it looks great. Good idea to get rid of the buck shot.

Richard,
Good move on the lead shot. I test flew a midwest AT-6 for a guy that was balanced the same way. Bunch of led epoxied into the cowl. Three for three flights had the cowl brake off during landing. I had a similar problem on a BT corsair. I ended up using 3 steel plates under the US41 motor mount. Each plate was 1/4" x 5" diameter steel. Did the job. But is still too much weight for the firewall. About 8 lbs of steel and US41 gasser. Total weight is 20lbs. I didnt build this plane so I'm gonna go in and modify the fire wall and beef it up since I need the weight anyway. That corsair flys great.

I made a cowl and added an FTE dummy engine to it then had to add ballast to the inside lip of the cowl. I made a mounting plate around the engine to bolt the cowl on from the front. It hids the mounting screws and looks like the weight dampens vibrations from the Saito 180. Its adds some work but I don't like seeing screws on a scale plane.

Richard, you should get an engine that weighs 3 lb. heavier than the OS 160, like the ASP 400 5-cylinder 4-stroke:

http://www.justengines.unseen.org/ASPrad.htm

Not sure if your cowl will fit the 9.21" diameter engine though.

Seany, the WM Zero cowl is only 8.5" in diameter at the front, so that engine won't fit. I already ordered a Brison 2.4 gasser for the plane. The OS 160FX is a light engine, as light as a 1.20 four stroke. No wonder so much lead is needed.
