Let's just say that with the 4 turbines and all that radio gear........$30,000 would get you close.....

Am I close David? Of course when you count the labor this would be a little short

Well here is the materials listing as of last month . . . . . . . .

Five 8' x 4' X 1/8" lite-ply sheets.

Three 5' x 5' x 1/4" Ply sheets.

Seven 4' x 1' x 1/18" ply sheets.

450 1/8" x 4" x 36" balsa sheets.

300 1/4" sq x 48" balsa strips.

60 1/4" sq x 36" spruce strips.

Four 3" x 4" x 36" balsa blocks.

To put this lot together you can also include the:

1.2 US gallons of PVA wood glue.

40 tubes of thin and thick cyano from Deluxe materials in the UK.

50 yards of 1.6 oz glass cloth.

17 lbs of skinning epoxy . . . . . . and 36 foam (paint decorating) rollers to apply the same . . . . of course most of the epoxy ended up on the workshop floor as dust after sanding.

And lastly 130 #11 Xacto knife blades.

and a lot of midnight oil too !!!!!!!!!! sorry, I lost track of the bales of wet/dry used . . . . . OPPS !!!!!!

The model has to go through CAA / LMA certification before I can fly her for anyone. The test date and location has been set and this gives me some more time to get all the detail on the model and to write up a few more reports for RCMW.

I will be posting video and pics on my web site once done and will let you know the dates later.

Davie,
Superb work. The first few days framing pictures were breathtaking.

Some questions:

What is the expected cruising speed?

Length of takoff roll?

Grass field capable?

What do you require in assistance to operate the airplane?

Do you plan on mounting it up at he big Messe in Sinsheim for 2004? What about Le Ferte Alais?

What is the field assembly time and how do you transport it?

Was this a team effort or you and wood and lots of time?

How will you balance the aircraft?

Thank you and best wishes for a long life of your Globemaster!!!

It is very pleasing indeed to see a model of these proportions that is not hacked out of foam but built in the traditional style of box, formers, longerons and planking. The results certainly display the efforts. Your work looks very professional. I hope you can get some photos of the airplane standing next to the real one.

By the way, what is the scale on the model? Sorry if you have already said and I missed it.

Regards,
Mark

Superb work. The first few days framing pictures were breathtaking. Thank you very much Mark for the compliment.

Some questions:

What is the expected cruising speed? Should be around 100 Kmh to 140 Kmh top top speed.

Length of takoff roll? I am hoping based on power and weight and on other models similar to this that it will be a fairly short TO with the amount of flap available.

Grass field capable? Definitely with 12 x 5" wheels and 2 x 4" nose wheels.

What do you require in assistance to operate the airplane? One helper to do the starting with me and a fire marshall as per jet safety practices.

Do you plan on mounting it up at he big Messe in Sinsheim for 2004? What about Le Ferte Alais? Email me details on Messe in Sinsheim and Yes, I will be going to La Ferte in 2004.

What is the field assembly time and how do you transport it? It takes 30 mins to assemble and dissemble on my own, with helper slightly less time. I transport it in my Citroen Relay van along with my 39% Extra 300 and funfly models.

Was this a team effort or you and wood and lots of time? Just Me wood and a LOT of late nights. But I did have help for the first five days of construction and again for another 5 days when skinning the wings from my good buddy who came over from Scotland to assist. He also made the fuel tanks for this model.

How will you balance the aircraft? Total weight divided into the two undercarriage assy locations and then it's the 'law of the Lever' to get the CG which on this model is exactly between the front and rear wheels on the main U/C assy.

Thank you and best wishes for a long life of your Globemaster!!! Thanks and best wishes to you too.

It is very pleasing indeed to see a model of these proportions that is not hacked out of foam but built in the traditional style of box, formers, longerons and planking. The results certainly display the efforts. Your work looks very professional. I hope you can get some photos of the airplane standing next to the real one. To be honest I hate the idea of all the models out there being mainly foam. It has had an impact of the building skills of many model-makers and although foam is faster, wood is a real pleasure to build with and always will be in my opinion.

By the way, what is the scale on the model? Sorry if you have already said and I missed it. It is 1:10 scale.

Why all wood - if it crashes early that's a lot of work down the drain. Wouldn't foam be a lot quicker ans easier???????

Sorry to leave you all in the dark, but I have been very busy finishing off the model for the upcoming test flights.

You can still access the construction on the model on http://homepage.eircom.net/~skycam/c17construction-1.htm and once the model has flown I will be updateing the whole web site afresh on http://homepage.eircom.net/~skycam/c17.htm

Cheers,

David, this has to be the nicest R/C model I have ever seen. The complexity, the clean sleek airframe, and all your wiring is just so cool! I mean, its 4 turbine engines!!!!!!!

Good luck!
