everyone having to buy and install and maintain a 200 dollar a pop speed limiter on evvery turbine aircraft, reguardless of attainable
quote:

max speed is your idea of nobody going to be seriously affected by this issue????

I sometimes cannot afford a $200 model! Yet I think that dollar figure will not seriously affect the jet modeler. Not with engines starting at $2000 and finished planes costing $10,000 sometimes more than 20 grand! 200 seems rather insignificant. IMO if required and more than one brande is approved or certified then the price will come down.

I wouldn't put a speed limiter in my jet. The last thing I want is some POS shutting the turbine down at the wrong time and losing a 6k jet over something mandated by someone who doesn't fly jets. Think this can't happen? I know someone it happened to.

I think you guys are all missing the point. This hobby is just one big airplane, fast jet, high profile accident away from having the FAA, NTSB, or some other federal agency stepping in and making it real difficult for anyone to have fun. we need to fine a way to reel everything in just a little bit to prevent that.

The "mines bigger" or "mines faster" or "mine cost more" attitudes out there has reached a point where it's all become insane. 50% scale models are not models, they're unmanned aerial vehicles. A lot of people out there aren't modeling for fun anymore, they're massaging their egos and basking in their vanity.

200mph+ models, even when flown properly, are deadly in the event of a radio glitch. How far will that jet travel in 3 to 5 seconds while no longer in control? Will there be a fire or explosion when it hits? How much damage could occur should that 50% scale, prop driven plane do should it come to rest in the laps of the spectators of a public event? How much kinetic energy is released when a 55 pound aircraft, travelling 150mph, hits something?

No one intends for anything to go wrong, but things do, and will. We all need to be thinking about the "what if" factor a lot more than we are now. Rules and regulations limiting what we can do have become mandatory, due in large part to the tremendous technical advances in this hobby over the last decade.

If we don't limit ourselves, I guarantee you that our government will.

In fact, I don't even have to hide my name, except from those checkbook modelers who buy more than they can fly.

Still worried about other people's money - eh Jim??

When you run out of things to say, is this your go to? The oh so dangerous checkbook modeller.

This is laughable....

If you flew or knew anything about turbine powered aircraft, then you would know that this problem has been addressed. How many turbine fires have you witnessed as of lately.

I don't know about the history of Jet modeling or the state of the art of current equipment. But it is odd that someone comments that the plane that went through the roof of a house didn't cause any real damage just a small fire. Now people claim there are no fires. Apparently the AMA has had a few claims from fires or they wouldn't be worried. Real planes travel at much higher speeds than models and have much more metal to ignite the fire. But all it takes to ignite one is some fuel in contect with the hot exhaust or still sparking ignitor. Even desiel fuel will ignite in a crash. Jet planes travel at the same approximate speed as racing cars so I would expect fuel cells to work. Doubt they would set you back too far, just tanks with some foam in them.

Define your term "as of lately" because I have seen two in the last 3 years. I guess they don't count because I am not a jet jock, right?
