I have been looking at some used YS engines. I would like to get a 120 as well as a 140 size. I noticed that in their descriptions there are different letters that follow the size such as 140DZ, 120L, etc.

My question is what different types are there and what do the letters stand for? At this time I wouldn't know the difference between an ABC or an XYZ and would like to know this so that I can make a wise purchasing decision.

Thank you in advance.

Since YS Performance "cleaned up" their website its been tough to locate specs on the older YS engines, more's the pity.

Here's a site which still has all the specs : http://home.online.no/~sjprod/YS%20engines%20overwiew.htm

I wrote YS about this a while ago. It appears there is no real connection to much. The NC is no charge, AC is air chamber other than that (?) they are just letters designating different models.

Actually there is a big difference. First it represents which generation of motor. I think the SF was the first, Then the SC(super charged) which was one of the most powerful. Next came The NC(non chambered) and AC(air chambered) together. The NC was the poor mans YS but still had more power than other 120's. The AC was by far one of the best put out! and then the FZ which was their designation for the whole line.
The 140 line is pretty much the same way. The 140 sport is the poor mans motor and is the least powerful but still pulls like a horse. The 140L is the standard in the line and the 140DZ or Dingo is the fuel injected hi end model. The DZ is a different animal than the rest in that its direct injected. Also pay attention to V-1's link!!!!

Thank you Visioneer_one and deputydog for the information. I was unable to get as much from the !QUOT!direct forum with the manufacturer!QUOT!!

I am also considering a new engine with more power than my older YS 120 for my Mick Reeves Spitfire (great aircraft). How can one make a decision with so many models in one size range without some way to separate power/performance and to justify price?

It would also be helpful to know which ones are more likely to give trouble down the road and the ones that never give trouble. My first 120 has always performed flawlessly. When I purchased it the name was YS Futaba (the distributor then?). It is truly a great engine and very reliable. Since then I have owned the 2 91s and a 63 all of which have given me trouble from time to time. The correction is usually to replace the valve and diaphragm I believe.

I am wondering what the problems are which might afflict the DZ. Some say that the injector blows cold on the igniter and then floods the engine easily.

With all the technology involved in these engines and their wide acceptance among the pro fliers, one would think that there would be an extensive explanation of their mechanisms and features, advantages and benefits over the competition. Also there should be a complete trouble shooting flow chart on the distributor's web site.

Maybe we could put enough information on this thread to satisfy the prospective buyers as well as those having problems.

Or maybe it is time to switch to gas!

Happy con-trails to you,

Blacksheep

Blacksheep;
Those are great suggestions that we all would love to see but in the real world most of the YS owners have figured it out on thier own or with another "experts" help. My experience started with the 45 and 61's. I had 1 OS 4 stroke and then went to the YS's.

You said you had problems with the 91's and 63. This is where YS added another needle. You have your low and hi but unlike the previous models you dont have to fuss with the regulator much. Maybe i've been lucky, my 91's and 63 run flawlessly.

The 120's and 140's run the same prop but you have more torque and sustained power the 140. You can pull more weight! The 140 sport takes the place of the 120 line and is a great engine. The 140l was the fiest and is powerful with no more trouble than the previous 120's. The FZ is just a new title. This is the one you should get. I dont see the need for the DINGO(or the price!). I just repaired a friends 140L and it was straight forward. These motors will hover a 12lb plane easily and fly a 16lb plane with authority.
