Status: offline 		I've just about got it. Just 1 question. I took the electronics out of a century hummingbird heli and dropped them into the badius. I had to hard wire the motor in because it was hard wired to the original SC. The fact that the motor was hard wired worries me a little. Should I worry that the GWS speed controller (in the mixer) will not be compatible with the badius motor? A stupid question maybe, but this mixing and matching components is new territory for me. Other than that it seems to be working fine. I'm really happy

My only worry is if the speed control on the heli mixer/receiver can handle the amp draw of the Badius motor vs the Heli motor, which I think might be smaller. Also are you going to use a battery that is comparable voltage to the heli? You don't want to overstress the Heli controls in that manner either.
What I thought you were going to do is to use your transmitter with a separate reciever and speed control, but if the heli all in one unit works, then I guess it is ok.

Status: offline 		It's working terrific right now... But for how long? I am using the entire system from the heli... Battery included. Both plane and heli use 8.4V 600mah. The chances I will be ok is pretty good. The best part is that when I tried it for the first time, I realized that the transmitter pots were dirty and made the servos "stutter" like crazy. It took 5 min. of fooling with them to get them to smooth out. I could never get the century heli to fly and I never figuered out why. Now I know. I will look for a new flight pack for the badius and when I get my heli stuff back from it, I'll bet thet Century will work! YEA! In the meantime I'm almost ready to FLY THE BADIUS!!! We've learned a whole lot more since this thread was active, join us over on the "Owners" forum. You'll be surprised at what we know about other stuff too.

As an example at our most recent meeting we were honored(?) to have experts from fields you'd never even thought of, giving hands on demos of "certain" products.

Status: offline 		phillips, just noticed after all this time that your question wasn't answered in a reasonably accurate or timely manner. Having read the entire thread some time ago I am sure the answer is contained therein. However, to save you some reading time in case you are still interested, my best estimate using airport information from near the end of the runway where I was flying, my ABs seem to fly just over 35 mph at maximum level flight speed.

Are you sure it isn't tail heavy? It has that tendency but if this works on your Badius, it must be ok.
There have been a gazillion mods done to this plane. All are on this thread but way too many pages to read.
Should be a fella posting that will put the pages up soon. He's been pretty busy so it may take a day or so.

Just happened to be listening to NOAA weather radio on the way to my "large but turbulent air" flying sight (trees and buildings all around the site) and discovered that my estimation of Accipiter Badius maximum level flight speed was over 30% too high. I couldn't believe how turbulent a "mere 10 mph wind" could be at the site so I packed up and went to my now favorite site near the end of a Salem airport runway. Whoa! What's this? NOAA is still reporting 10 mph winds, but the wind is so strong and uncomfortably cold that the outside maneuvers that I wanted to practice with my modified AB were out of the question.

Okay, I called the airport even before unloading the aircraft from the car when I got home, and the wind speed was reported to be 17. NOAA weather radio still said 10 mph at this time. After finally checking web weather stations (like I should have done in the beginning - please check the first url to see how I got fooled) it turns out that my original assumption was right. The airport is reporting in kilometers per hour. So, the real truth is that my AB's maximum level flight speed is approximately 22 mph.

I will be sure to get a second opinion next time, preferably an authoritative one. In the meantime, I am eagerly looking forward to performing a "strafing run" on a very "special PFer" in the future.

Status: offline 		JCF the prop just pulls off the shaft, give it a good tug and it slides off the shaft. is the prop shaft bent

Richard there are many places to get a replacement batt, it's really a matter of finding the best deal. I think cheapbatteries.com has them, you can use alternate batteries in the Badius, it doesn't have to be exact it just has to be wired with the same plug

Are you using the stock motor and prop? Keep all the stock props that break as you can remove the metal pins that hold the assembly together and perhaps make a good prop out of the busted ones.
If you are still using the stock I have a few spares. Say the word and I'll send a couple.

Check out WWW.Cheapbatterypacks.com for better batteries. Use the search and put the name of the plane in. The correct connector and a good 1100 MAH battery will come up. Might be a 1050 MAH. Don't remember.

Make absolutely positive that you don't cook the batteries if using the stock charger. Don't let the batteries get hot. Warm is good. Also, charge just before using as NIMH type batteries start losing capacity as soon as they are disconnected from the charger. As an example, if charged the night before using, the charge is severely less.

Let me go check.

Ok. It appears they don't have what most of us upgraded to anymore. A 1500 MAH pack will give exceptional flight times. It takes about 3 flights to break them in and then they perform even better. These will change your C of G. You'll need to move the pack as far forward as possible and make sure the battery pack won't hit the motor. A dent will cause battery trouble.

Battery chargers are a different story. They are soo many out there that it's hard for guys with many years of flying to figure out which one is best. My best recommendation is to visit us here at RCU at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6371525/anchors_6859234/mpage_231/key_/anchor/tm.htm#6859234

READ Page ONE Post ONE so you know who and what we are. After that just jump in. There are more people there that can help with the battery charger. I would think that a basic NIMH charger that actually works without constant monitoring is all you need for now.
BUT, you will either drop out of RC or continue and want to upgrade your planes and transmitter etc. Now we're talking some real money but most is a one time shot. Good TX, very good NIMH/Lipo charger and a few other things and you are now addicted forever.

ConRman coming back at you. I own 8 planes now and have made my bones in flying and repairing including outfitting an ARF. But I still enjoy flying the Badius and it has held up very well, thanks to all your tips and experience.

I'm looking to buy a replacement receiver for my Badius 27mhz AM. Anybody out there got a working one that they would be willing to sell?? I like to keep the Badius stock. Thanks

Status: offline 		andrew, having suffered a similar fate once myself (see url) I feel your pain. The Accipiter Badius is such a good airplane to have in flying condition and is so affordable I recommend that at least one back up AB ought to be bought and kept in good condition. The back up plane can be very useful in diagnosing problems in your repairable plane by swapping out parts until the defective parts can be found. Then it is just a simple matter of either buying new parts or a whole new plane to get back into the flying business.

Given all the good info on the threads you will surely be soaring into the wild blue yonder in no time!
