warbirdav8r -> Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 2:55 AM)

There will be a giantscale warbird only event at the AMA site laborday weekend next year. I don't want to get into the dayton discussion again. Just want to let guys know they have an option. No 3d or noontime stoppage etc. Just a bunch of warbird guys that want to have fun on a holiday weekend.Dennis Crooks will be the event director. Who's interested?

We want to make this a great event where guys can come and fly Giant scale Warbirds from dawn to dusk!. The event will be at the AMA National flying site.....plently room and it will be open to WWl through Modern Jets. We also will be flying off of grass. I will be the CD, so please let us know what you think!

Thanks
Paul LeTourneau

I think its great. Really a good use of the facilities. I visited Muncie for the first time a year ago. The museum is super and the site is very open. I'll try to be there.. its only about 10 hours from the DC area lol! BobH.

warbirdav8r -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 6:20 AM)

It's not set in stone yet that it will be on the grass. But it is an option. Most guy's prefer the grass i think. Not all I'm sure, but most. There is a great grass strip available at AMA.

flyboy---2002 -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 6:22 AM)

The reason that we are having it off the grass site, is because most WWl planes do not take a liking to pavement, besides taildragger WWll aircraft can handle the grass better. It will be a very well groomed site!

Roll On 60 -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 6:54 AM)

Flyboy 2002. I think you mean the pilots do not take to asphalt. The plane really doesn't care.
We have asphalt at our field and land all types of war birds with no problem except the ones caused by pilots.

ww2birds -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 6:58 AM)

Sounds GREAT! I have been wanting to make a trip the national site, but it's a real haul from NY, but an all-warbirds event would do it for me.

maddog-RCU -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 4:27 PM)

Glad to hear this is going to finally happen and it's close enough to me to make the trip. I am disappointed by one thing and that it will be a giant scale only. It leaves a number of our fellow warbird lovers out. Any chance it can be warbirds of ALL sizes?

CorsairJock -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 4:50 PM)

Make that at least 2 of us who are dissappointed that this event is giant scale only, I would have been able to bring several 1/7, 1/8, & 1/9 scale warbirds (including the Top Flight .60 size Corsair shown in picture) if all warbirds were permitted. As it is giant scale, I can bring none.

tiggerinmk -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 6:44 PM)

So, what is your definition of giant scale? Do you always assume the IMAA guidelines of 80"?
I'm planning on building a Spit over winter, I was going to go for a GSP, but if this limits my options I might have to build an 80"+ one instead....

Mr_Scale -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 6:56 PM)

I agree with the giant scale issue. My warbirds fall within the IMAA guidelines of giant scale but there will be a lot of planes and pilots that will not be able to attend an AMA event due to the fact that it is giant scale only assuming that the IMAA criteria is what is being used. That should be seriously considered and I would like to suggest that it is changed now to allow any scale powered warbird to attend. Those that have gone to Dayton over the years to fly warbirds feel discriminated against due to the aerobatic planes. This issue is not a lot different in some respects, as it will discriminate against the smaller warbirds.

flyboy---2002 -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 7:50 PM)

We wish we could please everybody but its not possible. If we made it open to all size warbirds, than some Giant scale guys may not like flying with the smaller planes. Its a tough decision on which way to go!

The Giant scale rules will be the 60", 80", 140" rules along with true quarter scale.

Thank you for all of the great feedback!

Paul LeTourneau

CSpierings -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 8:12 PM)

The event is on my calendar.

I nearly started a post when all the latest round of the Dayton stuff started discussing why the Warbird folks don't get something going regionally. Looks like Muncie is a good choice. Unfortunately I don't agree with the giant scale only restriction on this planned event. I can see reasons for and against having planes smaller than IMAA rules retricted. I think that is one of the things the WMWA had correct from the start.

What it really boils down to is that if we want to be able to have an event that is Warbird oriented at a place like Dayton, doesn't really come down to $? Seems like it to me. Tons more people fly the aerobatic planes than Warbirds. Many more ARFs are offered for the aerobats.

If we all start attending warbird only events and people can see that they aren't horrible to fly, at least those are the legends that seem to be perpetuated, we'll get more folks interested and become a group with more clout as a whole.

How about getting warbird events going locally too and help grow our little piece of the hobby?

Chris

Yahoo ... count me in !

CorsairJock -> RE: Warbirds only at Muncie AMA (11/18/2003 8:35 PM)

Perhaps you should have titled this thread "Giant Scale Warbirds only at Muncie AMA" instead of "Warbirds only at Muncie AMA", so the rest of us wouldn't be wasting our time reading about yet another discriminitory event.
