Can I fly a Ziroli JU-87 Stuka? I currently fly a GR RV-4 and a TF AT-6, second and third airplane. I really want a Stuka, not the GP ARF.

I am looking for a long building project, I figure the Ziroli Stuka will take me over a year to build, if I cut the kit.

Will that be enough time with the AT-6 to be able to fly the Ziroli Stuka?

Thanks in advanced

The Ziroli Stuka is a big baby and one of the easiest warbirds to fly. They land at a crawl( without flaps) and can be 3 pointed on the ground. They will slow down quickly with power reduction, so a little power till you have it made.

Some dude in Laredo has it now, dont recall his name, but I have flown with him a few times and he seems to be taking care of it.

ONE THREAD AFTER MY OWN HEART! THIS IS A QUOTE FROM THE MAN, THE GODFATHER OF GIANT WARBIRDS, THE LEGEND, ONE AND ONLY NICK SENIOR. "BARRY I'VE WATCHED YOU FLY THAT STUKA FOR YEARS". "ITS THE BEST ALL AROUND GIANT WARBIRD I'VE DESIGNED". THIS WAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO. I CANT TELL YOU HOW EASY THIS BIRD IS TO FLY. IT MAKES YOU LOOK THAT GOOD. WITH THE DIVE SIREN AND THE PYRO I USE AT FULL SCALE AIRSHOWS, ITS A BIG HIT. ITS NOT FORGIVING IN 25 TO 35MPH WINDS. I'LL ADMITT THAT, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, I CANT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT. ITS THE ULTIMATE HEAVY WARBIRD TRAINER. WITH NO RETRACTS TO MESS WITH! THE FULL SCALE WAS NOT FAST, SO POWERING IT WITH MORE THAN A 3.7 GASSER IS OVER KILL. NICK JR. HAS REDESIGNED THE SPATZ OUT OF A ONE PIECE FIBERGLASS MOLD.THEY ARE DURABLE, UNLIKE THE TWO HALF ABS THEY USE TO BE MADE OF. IT SHOULD WEIGH BETWEEN 26-30 LBS. WITH A 101"W/S THATS ABOUT AVERAGE WEIGHT. IT LANDS BY ITS SELF. JUST LINE UP WITH THE RUNWAY AND LET IT SETTLE IN. A SLIGHT FLARE JUST BEFORE TOUCH DOWN AND YOU HAVE A TOPGUN QUALITY LANDING. IT LOOP'S FINE AND ROLLS LIKE AN ELEPHANT. TAKE-OFFS ARE JUST AS EASY. SLOWLY ADVANCE THE THROTTLE, TAIL COMES UP, LET IT ROLL ON THE MAINS, FEED IN UP ELEVATOR AND AND THERE YOU HAVE A SCALE TAKE-OFF. YOU JUST CANT AMAGINE HOW EASY THIS AIRCRAFT REALLY IS TO FLY. ITS NOT YOUR AVERAGE KNEE KNOCKING, HOPE FOR A GOOD FLIGHT WARBIRD. ITS RELAXING TO FLY. ENOUGH SAID, GET YOU ONE!

Barry and the others:

Understand what you said about flying characteristics sounds great! I even had my checkbook out for a minute.

How does the Ziroli Stuka build as a first scale/scratch project? The original post mentioned that he has built 2 or 3 (I think) planes.

Is it wise to jump in this deep this quick from a building perspective? I ask this for selfish reasons, because being relatively new (C/L building experience 25 yrs ago with Ambroid remember that?) I would like to get into large scale at some point. Would a kit cutter help on the first one from the perspective of at least cutting everything for you?

What are your thoughts?

Thx much.

I've built a couple of planes from Ziroli plans. His plan set supplies you with a sheet with all the parts drawn out. You can just cut it up and paste the parts on the wood with spray adhesive, and start cutting with your jigsaw. If you have a bandsaw, it's even easier cutting the plywood pieces. You can use CA glue, in various thicknesses, for almost everything, except epoxy for engine and undercarriage areas. All the parts from Ziroli's plans fit right, too. I scratch-build most of my planes now, and I can build just as fast or faster than kits, where I have to figure out the instructions and redo parts that don't fit right.

Rib and fuse former sets would save some time, but you still have to cut and fit sheeting on everything. If you REALLY want to save some time and work, get his glass fuse. I just built his 92" P47 this way and it was well worth the $200 or so I spent on it.

I've seriously considered the Stuka, but I have all the parts cut for the Dauntless, so that's next on the agenda.

The Stuka is a time consuming project, not terribly difficult, just very time consuming. Buy about $20 worth of epoxy and $50 worth of hot stuff and throw in a big bottle of Pica Glu-it and a pile of varying grit sand paper and you get the idea.

Thanks for all the replies! I am almost ready to order the plans!

Just a couple more questions:

Is there a material list included with the plans? I would like to know everything that is required wood/hardware wise that is required to finish the plane.

I believe the wing is one piece, correct? Could I strap it to the luggage rack of my Jeep to transport it to local flying field? Don't really want to get a trailer.

Thanks again for the replies.

bwillhite,
I don't remember if I got a material list or not, but it might be in the instruction sheets.

I think most of Ziroli's designs show optional plug-in wing panels.

Did you look in the Ziroli website's construction gallery? It has some good pictures of a Stuka under construction.

Yes ,a material list is included with the plans. If I built another, I would NOT fool with the 1/4in music wire landing gear. Robart sells a set of struts for this plane. Make the mods needed to the wing while building for the strut mounts.

SCRATCH BUILDING ANY WARBIRD IS TIME CONSUMING, AND THE STUKA IS NO EXCEPTION. THE ONLY THING I REALLY DISAGREE WITH IS THE GEAR. BOB SHATTLEROE BENDS THE WIRE,WELDS THE WIRE TOGETHER AND HEAT TREATS THE ASSEMBLY FOR RIGIDITY AND DURABILITY. HE PACKS IT AND SHIPS IT TO YOU ALL FOR $24.00 HOW CAN YOU BEAT THAT? THE ROBART GEAR REQUIRES MODIFICATION AND IS QUITE EXPENSIVE. THE OLEO IS VERY SCALE, BUT NOT REALLY PRACTICAL ON A SPATZ COVERED WHEEL. I HAVE HAD MANY HARD LANDINGS, AND YES I BLEW OUT THE VALVE ON A DU-BRO PNEUMATIC WHEEL, BUT I HAVE NEVER PUT THE GEAR THRU THE WING. NICKY HAS DONE HIS HOMEWORK ON THE STUKA. THE WIRE GEAR ARE ATTACHED BY CROSSING OVER SEVERAL RIBS. I DONT THINK ANYTHING COULD BE STRONGER THAN THAT. HANK LIKES (THE LIKES LINE) ALSO MAKES AN OLEO STRUT FOR THE STUKA, BUT AGAIN ITS EXPENSIVE AND WITH THE SPATZ, NOT VERY PRACTICAL.

I just vectored the Ziroli stuka for a friend who cuts short kits and one thing i didnt like was the balsa dive flaps i would make them out of ply because i would be afraid if they are used they would split but thats just my opinion. but an aquaintence just got her short kit and said she poped the tail feathers together without glue in no time that it seems to be going to be a fast builder. I am waiting to get done with my 2 B-25's then a grumman duck to get to it.

Any contact information on Bob S. for the replacement gear? Mine keep smashing up and cracking the spats. I tried the heat treat deal and I'm waiting to see how it works.
