Fantastic. But it seems like the long way around? Neat, but complicated construction. You should talk to X-flight in HK, and see if they can hotwire an entire airframe out of foam if you give them the sections.

Hi Easytiger,

To make the airframe durable and stealth, we need to reinforce it with epoxy. Airframe cut with foam still require sanding or planking with a thin foam board to make the surface smooth. I construct the F-35 with similiar approach, with hotwire foam, then sheeted with carbon or fibre glass.

I know the owner of X-flight, just ordered his SU-47 and F-22. The F-16 and SU27 are very nice, but I have 3 F16, 4 SU27 (some of them are foamy) already. Not too much interest at the moment.

Cheers,
Aldous.

Hi Easytiger,

Have you ordered anything from x-flight? A friend of mine received his F-16 last Saturday. The wings are reinforced with carbon, fairly stiff. Worth to try their F-35.

Cheers,
Aldous.

Yes, the F-16 is on the way...beleive it or not, I DON'T have an F-16 right now, and it's the most popular plane out there! I would have gone for the F-35, if I did not have the Oakdale one still flying.
I am impressed with X-flight, it's a new method of construction, at least for commerical construction, and they seem to be cranking out new models at a very fast rate, and testing and improving them constantly. I like innovators!

Hey do you guys know the website for x-flight, if they have one (I hope)?

Thanks,

Hi Easytiger,

X-flight hotwire foam from cross sections, then sand it to smooth (or leave it the model builder do it). With some reinforcement, foamy + EDF is a good combination. My F-22 arrived, waiting for the SU-47.

Cheers,
Aldous.

Building 2 ducting diverting around 25% of the thrust to the wings. This is the portion inside the fuselage, with an extension inside the wings.

Aldous,

Is the wing thrust angled down perpendicularly at 90 degrees, or offset a bit? Behind the CG in hover, with two servo valves and asymmetric thrust out the ducts, do you expect just roll or also some yaw control?

Hi Turner,

It will be offset 100 degree, instead of perpendicular down to the ground. There is another hole control by value at the left side of the ducting for yaw control. I'll ask the CAD man to draw up my idea in side view to elaborate further.

Cheers,
Aldous.

Hi Easytiger,

I got my copy. Hmm... billionaire...playboy....!!!??? Anyhow, would like to take this opportunity to thank you and Russ to kit and report the F-35.

The DS94s+Lehner motors are on the way. Will have more power on hand in case the DS51s+Kontronics don't provide enough thrust.

Cheers,
Aldous.

Hi all,

I found that I have not posted the F-35 flying picts in this thread. Sorry about that. Here they are of the 5'6" fibre glass version powered by OS91DF.

Aldous.

Hi all,

I have a few spare 4'6" foam cut (strategic areas reinforced with fibre glass) ARF for sales at USD200. They are light weight (fuse, wing, taileron and fin less than 500g) specially built for VTOL experiment.

Send me an Email at aldous@xmlhk.com if you're interested.

Thanks,
Aldous.

Hi all,

Thanks for your interest in the model. I got some sections of 2 prototypes.

IMG_4579_1.JPG: a prototype where only the intake is reinforced with fibre glass.
IMG_4573_1.JPG and IMG_4577_1.JPG: another where the whole intake section is cut into halves, sand to smooth, reinforced with fibre glass and glue together again.
IMG_4574_1.JPG and IMG_4575_1.JPG: cutout for vertical fan and a DS-51 installed.
IMG_4582_1.JPG: rear fan section.
IMG_4583_1.JPG: vertical fan and rear fan section put together.

Cheers,
Aldous.

Aldous,

Great job, the model looks outstanding!!!! Gents I was wondering if anyone in this blog has scale blue prints/ cross sections of the F-35 that will like to sell or trade. I'm looking to build a larger version of the Oakdale model, maybe a 1/8 scale. If anyone out there can help a fellow modeler I would greatly appreciate it.

Heres my email
socshooter68@yahoo.com
Thanks again for your assitance.

Joe

Accurate 3 view planforms and especially cross sections of the F-35 may not be available yet.

The F-35B has been modified quite a bit from the X-35B. Some drawings and details can be found at http://www.codeonemagazine.com/archives/2008/articles/apr_08/f35transition/index.html For the F35-B, there are major changes in the main and aux inlets for the fan, added ventral inboard Weapon bays, a different canopy and altered nose gear doors. The engine inlets/nacells have been 'shortened' 30 inches and changed to 3 sided (from 4 on the X series). The span is increased (33 to 35 feet), the fuse longer (9 inches) without nose boom and maybe a little fatter with a more horizontal look over the engine in the side view. The horizontal tails are slightly larger but shortened in span, and the vertical tails are taller but with increased sweep and less cant angle. All difficult to guess at for any F-35 model.

Russ Ahlberg at www.Oakdaleaircraft.com may be able to help you with scalable cross sections for the X-35B. I find good pictures at http://www.f-16.net/f-16_forum_viewforum-f-22.html

L Turner,

Thank you so much for the info and the link. It has helped me out in getting additional information. I just send Russ an email and see if he can provide larger blue prints. The more I look at the F-35 the more I learn to appreciate the workmanship on this aircraft. Thank you again my friend..

Joe
