Hello all. I have noted that the Zhen Hua four channel radio comes with an interface cable that is potentially wired incorrectly. Mine was. I changed the wiring in the DB-9 connector and now it works just fine. However, I still cannot get channel three (throttle) to work at all. It doesn't work (channel three)in Windows joystick setup, nor in FMS. The other three channels work just fine. This is the confusing thing to me. How could three channels be seen and used, but not four? No matter how many channels are set up in both Windows joystick settings or FMS settings, the throttle channel simply does not work! I have heard in the past that many other people were experiencing the exact same problem. But, I can't seem to find those threads anywhere to see how they solved the problem. If someone knows the problem, please post a detailed explanation of what is causing the problem.
I am going to buzz out the cable and post the wiring later this morning, for those who are wondering what the four channel Tx pinout is.

Thorn3,

It may be FMS problem--sometimes, it moves one of the channels a couple of channels down, i.e. the first 3 channels occupy slots from 1 to 3, while the 4th channel is in slot 6. This is not a problem if you have only one joystick, but if the virtual PPJoy joystick you are trying to use is the second one, the last channel becomes inaccessible (as FMS only attempts to read 8 axes and the last channel is at 10th slot).

If this is the case, the solution is simple--delete all the joysticks but the PPJoy one from Control Panel/Game Controllers list, then FMS will see PPJoy as the first joystick and you'll be able to access the last channel.

I hope this helps,
Boris

Thanks for the information! I am really confused about this problem. When I set up the joystick in Windows XP Pro, it showed all four bars to show movement in the two joysticks of my Tx. But, only channels 1,2 and 4 would do anything. I double checked the Tx function on a receiver with servos. No problem there. I then checked the output from the trainer jack with an oscilloscope. No problem there. So, I know that the Tx is not the problem. Since I could see the bars I set up in the Windows joystick setup, it is set up to see both sticks. Hmm.. strange why channel three doesn't work. I will try your suggestion. I believe however that there is only one joystick set up in the computer. But, just in case there is something hidden or overlooked, I will check again. It does make sense that the throttle channel is being pushed down the line, thus not being seen.
On a different note, my brother is an electronics engineer and owns his own company in Germany. He and I were discussing various simulator and associated circuitry problems today. I convinced him to develop a solution to everyone's simulator hardware and software problems. He believes he can design a high quality, no problems circuit with software to run simulators from Tx's. He specializes in such things. If we were to put together a fool proof simulator hardware and software package, how much would people feel comfortable paying? I need to get a price range for him. Development will start immediately following some basic research.
So, anyone who needs quality simulator hardware, put your two cents in and tell me what you all want from such a product. Of course you would want it to work well, but what features are desired?

Hi

A few people have asked for a Linux solution equal to the Windows FMS, including myself. Since nothing was happening, and I had recently deleted my Windows partition (first thing that goes when I need some space ), I decided to investigate the possibility to use my controller with serial cable in Linux with FlightGear.

Well, after developing a kernel module for the serial pic to allow Linux to see the R/C as a Joystick, I am now extremely happy to report that it works 100% with my NO-NAME brand helicopter and R/C (I think it is a colco release in SA under the name CYCLONE). The transmitter is connected using a serial cable that came with the package.

It runs at 19200 baud, and syncs using a single byte every seven bytes with the byte 255.

It's even more realistic than I ever imagined. Using the helicopter model that ships with FlightGear, I was able to set up all the controls to effectively mimic the real life effect as close as possible.

The driver is available as a source download from http://www.teqcle.co.za/rcpic2/ and was compiled and tested with FC3 with the latest update kernel (remember to install the kernel-devel packages for the module to compile), and FC5 with latest update, so it should theoretically work with everything in between. I know it won't work for any kernel below 2.6.12, as there was a change in the serio subsystem that will only work with later kernels.

Shoud anyone require assistance, feel free to drop me a mail or chat on ICQ.

Johan van den Berg
