I am building a Yellow P-47 and I am seeking info on hiding the aileron and flap control rods and horns internally. Has anyone done this on a Yellow kit? The instructions show how to hide the elevator and rudder controls internally. The Yellow kits have foam wings, so is the possible without digging out the foam and weakening the wing structure?

Thanks

Kirk,
short course;

set up with your servos mounted in the regular location,

Hinge your controls on the bottom.

The servos where mounted in the pockets will need a guide hole for the control from the servo arm to the ail/flap. Drilled out through the wing, from the sub trailing edge of the wing, to the servo arm. The drilling process can be either via an over sized long drill bit, or undersized, and elongate the guide hole, to accomodate the angles needed for the control rods of your choice. I use 4/40 rods on mine.

As the servo sits in the pockets, it will need to be raised until it contacts the bottom of the servo cover. This gives room for the servo arm to move within the well.

A control connection will need to be either fabricated or purchased, like the bvm type, where you dremel out the leading edge of the ail/flap, and then either connect by way of clevis or ball link.

I may have some working examples around the shop, that I can take pictures of for you.

The only time consuming event will be the physical connecting to the servo arm and the ail/flap leading edge. And the rigging of the radio after that.

Ray

I found an old flap to illustrate how to set up the ail/flaps

The ply is placed there just for the visual, I would make the part out of much stronger material depending on the aircraft, and for me it means 5ply and or solid glass parts, better yet is a carbon sheet. One other quick and easy part is the cut off arm of a servo arm provided it is long enough to set within for a good bound. I believe thats what was used here initially was a Dubro heavy duty arm that was cut off, as both sides were not needed.

Note that the hinges are on the bottom of the surface, and the connection point is mounted at the top, if you draw an imaginary line from this connection point to the servo, that is what you will need to dremel and or drill out of the foam, or remove if you are doing a built up wing.

You might want to check out this site...I used these on my DC3....

http://www.proptwisters.org/rds2/

Adittionally, I noticed in (I think) either RCM, or the AMA rag an ad from an outfit that sells the rods and pockets so you don't have to make them if you don't want to.......

Jose,
I was getting way out of shape, so I went to ebay and got a rower. Love this machine. it is a total work out, since I cant run the miles like I used to when I was alot younger.

Too bad you arent gonna make it to Castle, you would enjoy seeing the Dragonfly of Sungs fly, as well as see all the gophers that I plan to give fly by haircuts to.
