Here's a quick review on the Jack Stafford B-24 Liberator...

B24 maiden flight was this afternoon. Had some idle problems with two of the
OS fp 25s, but got them all running and took off down the runway. It lifted off
nicely after getting up to speed about 300 ft down the runway. We had
about a 5mph wind from the north down the runway. Went up to about 400 ft and did a nice
slow turn, raised the gear and put in 1 click of down trim. Flew really
nice. Very impressive looking in the air. If you didn't know better you'd
say it was the real thing. I enjoy fast planes and the B24 flew slower than
I expected it to. Slows down nicely when you throttle back. My first
approach was a little short, so I throttled back up and went around again.
The second landing was nice. You need to come in a little higher than you
normally would with a pattern plane. The elevator also became mushy on the
flair, but more than enough authority to handle the plane. I never tried to
stall it, but my feeling is that it would take a lot to stall it.

Regards,

Fred

Haven't weighed it, but it's pretty heavy. Most of the weight is in the wing. The fuse is light as a feather.. Wing span is 91".

Fred, Yeh, I have a couple of twins that are the same way...light fuse with all the weight in the wing. I have yet to tackle a multi...but one day hope to do a big B-17 or Lancaster. You have a real nice airplane there and I wish you the best of luck with her and many, many successful flights. Post some more pics of her when you can.
Happy flying,
Rob Bailey / Pickupsticks

I got the kit at a swap shop for about $150 and the 4 FP 25's cost me less than $50 each. Total construction time was about 3 months of evenings.

Fred,
Thanks for showing us your "Liberator." I, too have the Stafford kit. Did you find/use the recomended Goldburg landing gear?

I'm not sure if you can still buy the Goldberg gear. I used Robart mechanicals for the nose and main.

I'm using 4 micro servos which fit inside each engine nacell along with the fuel tank. Running servo extensions is a lot easier than trying to get 20 or so bellcranks working correctly. The kit is an early 70's design and as some of us remember, bellcranks were a lot cheaper (and smaller) than servos in those days.
