Thanks for the complement! I enjoyed making them. It's nice to have some memories of what happened on DVD so it will not degrade and will be easy to distribute. It's also fun to share the same illness with others! I can't wait to see some video of someone else’s PT-17 Stearman adventures!

I bought a maple shelf board about 18" wide by 8' long at Home Depot for about 10 dollars. I sorted through quite a few pieces to find one that was extremely flat. I bolted the Fuselage to the board and built the fuselage. The Great Planes magnetic board was perfect for everything else. I don't know what I would have done without it.

ATTENTION Flair Stearman Owners....REPLACEMENT FIBERGLASS LANDING GEAR FAIRINGS

In approximately 4-weeks Fiberglass Specialties will be carrying replacement fiberglass landing gear fairings for the Flair PT-17 Stearman. These new fairings will be direct replacements for the original ABS plastic fairings that came with the kit. The ABS plastic landing gear fairing are very fragile and were easily cracked. They also became brittle by exposure to certain paints.

I realized that in fact almost all PT-17 Flair Stearman owners would be potential customers. If you have read any of the reviews on the Flair PT-17 Stearman in "Model Airplane News" or built the kit, you are aware of this weakness.

Estimated cost of replacement fiberglass upper landing gear fairings is $36.00 per pair.

A photo of my own cracked ABS plastic landing gear fairings and a link to Fiberglass Specialties:

Thanks for the link and the info. By the time I get to the faring stage, Fiberglass Spec. should be carrying the parts.

Cybertom, you said "bolted" the fuse to the board...can you tell me more on that? As to the GP mag board, I think I'll pick one up; there is one left at my local hobby store, it does look a lot easier to use. I have crushed a rib or split a LE by using pins and that really stinks.

I have seen some posts where builders are using MDF shelving board instead of the solid not sure which would be better. Personally I have used a 3'x5' flat conf. table that is surprisingly flat and even for my kit building with ceiling tile for the work surface. But since this plane will be, as yours was, my first real scale plane I want to get it right from start to finish- no surprises and completely accurate.

If you look closely at the photos I put on the DVD disk you will see that I screwed the fuselage down to the building board through the holes in the wood blocks used to attach the cabane struts.

Without a doubt it looks AWESOME! Where’s my flight video? Don't just tease us with some pictures. We want to see and hear that thing fly!

Well GOOD NEWS for all of FLAIR kit owners!!!! Here is the copy...

    Flair UK

Web site has been redesifned as well...

    quote:

Flair - new company - new start.
Many customers will be aware that Flair Products Ltd went into voluntary liquidation in April. This saddened many who appreciated the fine range of products available from this unique UK distributor.
The assets of the company were purchased by a new business team and Flair opened for business again on 23rd May 2005.
The prime objective of the new team will be to restore Flair's once highly respected reputation for good quality products sold at a fair price with prompt delivery from stock. To kick start this rebirth we have employed the services of two well known individuals previously associated with Flair.
Dudley Pattison, original founder of Flair, will be charged with restoring the key values of good service, supply from stock, and the reinstatement of the famous Flair range of kits. Dudley will adopt a hands on approach and will be a high profile face at future Flair events.
Richard Smart, ex. design director for Flair, is engaged to increase the product base and to ensure that Flair can supply not just an airframe but all the necessary accessories as well. Richard is also working on a number of new products that will be launched later this year.
It is our intention to retain favourites from the Flair range and to develop/source new and exciting products for the future. New ARTFs will be introduced regularly and traditional items such as the Scout range, the Classic range etc., Spectrum paint, wheels, decals, canopies, accessories, etc. will all be standard stock items.
In the event you cannot find stock of what you seek at your favourite shop, or you cannot visit a shop locally, products will be available from the Flair online shop, or they can be ordered direct from the factory by phone, fax or email etc.
Please do remember though that if you support your local shop it will be there for you in the future. It is Flair's intention to do this so please help them to give you the service you seek.

The business team would like to assure all customers of our commitment to the above objectives and would like to thank all those modellers and traders who have contacted us to express their support.

    Flair Business Team.

In the body beneath they talk about a NEW redesigned PT-17, is this the old copy or are they really going to improve it? I can not remember which this is..

    quote:

Flair's New Stearman Available In October
The new "Flair Classic Scale" model - PT-17 Boeing Stearman, 1:4.3 scale will be available in October, price details to be announced.
A sigh of relief after a lot of hard work you can now see that the Stearman is finished and has also flown.

We have now completed our flight trials using a Laser 150 and I can tell you that the model flies just like the real thing - it is slow and smooth. We have a good reputation for models that fly well and this one is definately going to be just as good.
I am working on the drawings and minor design adjustments also to ensure that this kit is the best we have produced so far.
We expect to put the kit on the market during October, (there will be some midnight oil to achieve this). At this time we cannot suggest a firm price, but again, we are determined to offer great value for money. Just ask any of our Tiger Moth, ASK8 or Yak 55 owners and they will convince you if you have never built one of the Flair "Classic Scale" series before that they are superb to build and fly.

    ChasRB,

I didn't see anything on the website about "new and improved", and the text you have quoted looks like the original release information for the kit you have, particularly given the 2001 date and some of the other wording.

I am glad they are going to be back in business, and I hope this means the chipmunk kit they were working on will now become a reality this year.
