    Charsb,

A Happy 4th to you as well!

As far as the BUSA Stearman being more scale? I would have to disagree. The proportions don't seem right to me. Looks like a BIG guppy. I don't have the kit so I can't be more specific but that's how it looks to me. Take a look at the landing gear and how it's shaped. Looks a little fat and has the wrong curve as it transitions to the fuselage. Also the nose of the fuselage tapers to much. The cut of the cockpit openings are shaped differently and the fuselage length looks short and stubby. At least that's in my opinion.

For now I'll stick with the Flair kit as a scale reprsentation of the Stearman. I can fix the one problem we have discussed (Cabane Strut placement) pretty easily. Everything else on the Flair seems to be right to me but I could be wrong.

Look at the following pictures. The BUSA Stearman is from another thread here. Buzz Kill did an outstanding job on building this BUSA kit. I think he took it about as far as you can possibly go. This is one of those cases where the skill of the builder far exceeded the basic construction of the kit. As good of a job as he did, (this is no knock on his workmanship) does it really have the lines of a full scale Stearman?

I don't know what airfoil the BUSA kit is using but the chord looks much thicker than the scale airfoil (NACA 2213). This is not necessarily bad because of the scale effect. A thicker chord may actually produce more scale flight charateristics on a 33% airplane.

I guess what I was thinking was the scale features more than the 1 to 1 comparison. e.g. the way the cabanes mount etc. But you are right it is off in a few areas. It looks a bit chunky...

    STEARMAN FLYING TAIL

    Chasrb,

I found another change from the scale configuration that might be contributing to the tendency to carry a significant amount of down trim if configured by the Flair instructions:
    3.5 degrees incidence (upper wing)
    3.5 degrees incidence (lower wing)
    3.0 degrees incidence (stabilizer)

According to the book the full scale Stearman has a "Flying Tail". The airfoil of the stabilizer actually has a significant amount of camber to it so just as the main wings it generates more lift with increased speed. This would allow the stabilizer to maintain and equilibrium with the main wings as speed changes. Theoretically the airplane would stay in trim regardless of speed.

The Flair kit has a symmetrical airfoil as does every other kit or plan I am aware of.

Boy that cross wind is a killer. Almost caused a ground loop. I really have to complement you on keeping your Stearman so light. From what I could tell she flew very scale at that weight. I cannot fly my Stearman that slowly because of the weight of the Robart Radial engine. Nice job!!!

I can't wait to see Charsb's Stearman fly. His weight will be a least a few pounds lighter than mine but still powered by a radial.

COOL, I could go for having a pair of Stearmans!

I am getting closer as the days go by to start the covering process. I am doing the final sanding and fit of the part pre-covered. Can't wait!

    Hallo together,

I´ve bought an used stearman pt-17, it should be an 'Bob Dively' model! Does someone know this aircraft an can give me further informations about it! I would especially need the right gravity point and the up and down ways for the servos! I´d be very happy if someone could send me an construction plan of this aircraft, because i want to lose some weight of the 17kg that my stearman has! There are 1.5kg Plumbum in the nose, is this normal?

Perhaps I´ll build an superstearman by changing the stearman pt-17! Has someone done this befor and can give me some informations?

Thank´s for your help, hope you can understand my English!

    Andreas

It seems to be a little bit another construction then mine! My upper wing is build out of one pice! Are the wires between the upper and lower wing necessary for flying or is this only scale decoration?

How do i get pictures into this forum?

    Hi Andreas,
The flying wires on the Flair Stearman are needed for structural strength. They are definitely not for decoration

When you reply to a post you will see at the bottom of the reply page a message thet says : "Click here to upload images and files!

Just click on the writing and then follow the instructions.

    Hope this helps
