    Argon,

Boy I was wondering how you were doing. Did you the video clips I sent to your wife’s account? I can't believe what you bought. Holly SMOKES!!! You're not finished with this radial project and you already bought the next one! Your wife is one hell of a Gal!

It's good to hear from you again and to know that you’re feeling better. You must be in pretty good shape to tackle a 1/3 scale WACO with a 5-cylinder gas radial.

Do have any new pictures of your Stearman? It was 62 degrees here in Cleveland today. It's got to be getting warmer down there in Florida. I still can't paint yet. As soon as the weather is warm enough I'm going to finish the repairs.

Boy that thing looks fantastic! I love the detail!!! It's really hard to tell it isn't full scale! How about a first flight video. I'm sure we have someplace on the web we can stash it an place a link here.

Thank you for the kind words. A first flight video can be arranged if our club video guy is present for the first flight. However, if not then a video of one of the later flights possibly at our funfly event. That could even be the first flight then. I know it will fly perfectly and get people looking, but I'm afraid to fly it now that it's become somewhat of a hangar queen amongst my friends. I've been a rc pilot now for almost seven years with a great record, but my first flight with my stearman is going to make me a touch nervous knowing how much time and love I've put into it. I'm going to need a buddy box and a crowd of close friends for emotional support....just in case

p.s. I'll post the link to the video in this thread or under 'kit building'

You guys learning or about to learn to fly your Stearmans, check out this site and watch the videos. The videos are black and white but it's like sitting in a classroom. You will need Realplayer 10 to watch. Let me know what you think.

No way Dude! With 7-years experience you can do it no problem. The Flair Stearman fly’s like a BIG trainer which is what it is supposed to be. Go for it! Don't do all that work and let someone else get the glory. If I can do it in my second year of flying I know you can do it sleeping!

Hangar Queen! Don't even say that word in this thread. That plane you built is special only because your going to fly it. If you let it sit on the ground, it just becomes another dream that didn't materialize for the pilot or the spectators. This hobby has way too many aircraft that never leave the ground. Remember what forum you’re in.

Think of the others you will inspire when you fly it. Or that one kid that might get into this hobby because he saw your Stearman fly and it got his imagination going.

Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained. Live up to your name OutaControl. Make us proud!

    PS,
This is the worst that can happen. This is a dead stick landing I had my first summer flying the Stearman August 26th 2003. My Robart crapped out on me and I was way short of the runway. I landing like a helicopter bouncing so hard it did a cart wheel. She wasn't damaged to bad though. I fixed my Stearman and she has made many flights the years since. You can see that I didn't have the insignias painted on or changed the rudder to a more authentic NAVY blue color. She survived and so did I!

Wow!!!! That would probably make me, a grown man, cry out loud in public!!! I read in an earlier post you had a mishap. I'm glad you're back on your feet and back in the air. My worst incident was about six years ago with a H9 J-3 Cub with G23. Fuel line fell loose inside the tank resulting in deadstick. Should have descended in a shallow glide over the cornfield. (Corn was new and short) What di I do? I tried to bank hard toward the airfield, stalled, and that plane became history.
As for my Stearman, thank you very much for your vote of confidence. My G38 won't let me down(pardon the pun). I have two other G38's, two G23's and a G26....all 100% reliable with hundreds of flights.
This flight will happen and sometime this year you will see it, hopefully. I'll change my name to 'incontrol'.

Anyone see the Stearman videos from Zeno yet? If you see it, I'm telling you, it's a learning tool for sure.

I have had 2-frustraiting accidents with my Stearman both due to the engine quitting. Both times I was going the wrong direction and to low to get her turned around in time for a clean landing.

The last and most embarrassing incident was at Shelby last year. 2-minutes over Shelby and Cylinder-7 threw a valve.

Robart repaired in under warranty and the engine is ready to go but with a new cylinder. What really sucks is that until that valve let go that engine was running incredibly. Smooth as a Swiss watch and gobs of great power and sound until it quit. I have a short video clip and when by Stearman goes by all the other airplanes sound like toys in comparison. Theres a guy in Texas with over 400 flights on the engine and another in New England with over 100. Hopefully Shelby was the last time I have an issue I have with the R780. I want to be the guy in Cleveland with 500 perfect flights!

As soon as the weather warms up I'm going to put it on the test stand and run 5-gallons of gas through it over the course of a week. That should break in that new cylinder and ensure reliable flying for me this year.

    PS,
I'm designing my own 1/4th scale Gloster Gladiator using SolidWorks 3D Solids Modeler. I can't wait to get a building thread going on that. My wife bought me a 1/4th scale Flair Tiger Moth for Christmas. I'm going to shelf the Gladiator project for a while and get the 1/4th Tiger Moth finished so I can have 2-planes at Shelby this year. I'm giving my wife my old Great Planes Tiger Moth ARF trainer. I have over 100 flights on her and she is still in one piece.

Tom: Yes the videos are great and it is getting warmer in FL. Dont have any new pictures, haven't even started the Robart for the break-in. Remember even if my Stearman is not finished yet we have a date in the spring (and it is coming soon). You can fly yours and show me how it does in real life. I'm starting to fly again and life is good. About my wife...I just tell her I have "A CONDITION" and it requires constant plane projects....she looks at me a little puzzeled and nods in approval, it is not too far from the truth.

How much advanced notice do you need? Work is sending me back to England about that time and then onto Japan. It's going to be kind of crazy for me the first 9-months of this year. I'm sure I can squeeze in a trip to Florida somewhere. I got to have my priorities! You sound like your getting better. That line about having a condition. I'll have to save that one for later use. Take care of yourself!!!

First of all let me say that your Stearman is Outstanding! It's turning out to be a real beauty! From now on whenever I have Red Baron Pizza, I'm going to think of your Stearman!

What did you cover and paint it with?

If I were you I would send some photo's of your Stearman to Flair when you get finished. Take it to a nice Golf Course and set it on the putting green with some trees way in the background. The short turf will make your Stearman appear very scale. In my opinion, your Stearman is much more noteworthy than the airplanes in the customer photo's they currently have posted on their website.

    Excellent Work!

Don't forget to make a 1st flight video. I know everyone who watches this thread will want to see it.

    Hi Tom
Thanks for all credit Tom, it feels very good.
It's covered whit Solartex and painted Standox 2k car paint.

I have a question for you:
What angle do you have you on the topwing?
Have you follow the drawings? That have I done.
Some people taking about 0 degree on the topwing, what do you think abaut that?
I think that's for faster airplane like Ultimate and Pitts.

The only change I would have made if I could go back and do it all again would be 3.5 degrees tail incidence. They recommend 3 degrees in the plan, but most have found that you need a lot of down elevator if you follow this recommendation. Flair has posted a change on their website recommending 3-3.5 degrees.

    I followed the
