Does anybody know if an MVVS q-500 .40 will keep up or at least maybe have a chance against a nelson or a jett? It's going on a dominator and I was just curious. Also, does anybody know about a good prop size for this engine, it has a longer stroke than the nelsons and jetts so I know it needs a little more bite. I figured this one will put out more power with a little less rpms, rather than trying to squeak every last but of rpms out of it.

Thanks,
Joey

Joey,

While the MVVS .40 Q500 is a fine motor, it is not in the same league with a Jett or Nelson. Its closest competition would be the Webra and Rossi Q500 motors. I had one several years ago and I liked it fine but I would not even attempt to compare it to the fine motors that Dub and Henry produce. If it were at all competitive, you would see many more of them on the 428 circuit just because the price is a lot less than for the real racing motors. As for the prop (if I can recall correctly), I used a Rev-Up 8.5 X 7.75 or something close to that anyway.

Don't get me wrong, the MVVS is a fine motor. It's just not a Jett or Nelson.

And another thought...

It always comes down to pilot skill. Consider Randy Bridge flying an MVVS powered quickie vs. me flying my Jett BSE powered bird. In this situation, he would still beat me because he's a much better pilot than I am even though I would have the faster motor. Heck, he'd probably be able to beat me flying a Thunder Tiger.

Also on my post above, I mentioned that I used the Rev-Up prop. This was before the APC quickie props were available so I didn't have any experience with them on the MVVS.

For props, try the APC 8.75 x 7.75 W This is what we use in our circuit on the Webra Q pylon motor. With a Nelson Ultra Thrust muffler (highly recommended) this motor turns close to 19,000 using this prop. Very acceptable flying speeds for an intermediate (not 424) quickie event but as John says, it's not in the 428 league.

I appreciate the help, I was thinking that if I really shave my plane down and get lots of practice maybe I will be able to work my way up with this engine. I REEEAAAAALLLLY want a nelson but every time I say that word my wallet runs away and hides. Thanks a lot,

Joey

Two suggestions for you... Do you already race 424? If not... get a Thunder Tiger and a Q500 arf... a lot of fun for a small amount of $$$. If you really want 428 speeds and racing... buy a used Nelson for 1/2 the price. Ask around, watch EBAY or the NMPRA website... you will see used Nelson Q500 engines from time to time in the $150-200 range. If buying used... look for ones with newer cases and pipes(shorter 1 piece tail) versions if possible. Even a 1/2 used up one generation old case/piston/sleeve will still get you going pretty good in 428 without hurting the wallet too much. Good luck.

Joey,

If you don't like the price of the Nelsons, go with a Jett. $275 for the std version which is a very fine motor in its own right. I have two (older) Jett Q500 motors and one BSE Q500 motor. I like them very much!
